Loss to Saints keeps Eagles up at night

POSTED: Tuesday, November 6, 2012, 8:40 AM

Did the Eagles make the right move in extending Howie Roseman’s contract?
Yes.
No.

NEW ORLEANS - The wheels of the Eagles' charter flight back from Louisiana touched down in Philadelphia at 3:49 am on Tuesday.

The Eagles had plenty of time for soul searching during their (likely quiet) 2 hour and 3 minute journey home after Monday night's 28-13 spanking in front of a national audience, though their flight through the night didn't produce a bunch of groggy players.

More than an hour after the team's plane landed, DeSean Jackson tweeted at 5:06 am that he was still up watching film.

"Up watching film," Jackson (@DeseanJackson10) wrote. "I'm in it. We've gotta pull this together. Football ain't never been this frustrating. But ayyyye (sic) got 2 get it RIGHT. Straight like that."

The tweet was a welcomed sign of life from one of the few Eagles players who actually showed up in New Orleans. Jackson caught his second touchdown pass of the season on a 77-yard bomb in the third quarter, which was the Eagles' longest play from scrimmage this season. It was Jackson's longest reception since 2010. He finished with 100 total yards on 3 grabs.

Jackson apparently wasn't the only one who was kept up by the Birds' putrid performance.

Tight end Brent Celek, who was responsible for both of the Eagles' turnovers against the Saints, voiced his disappointment in himself on his own Twitter account (@BrentCelek). The Saints' Pick-6 from the red zone bounced off Celek's finger tips. He also fumbled late in the third quarter as the Eagles tried to gain momentum.

"This is an embarrassing time to say the least," Celek wrote. "I def(initely) didn't play as you all expect and what I expect of myself. It's my job to help turn this thing around.

"I'm not asking for sympathy. Fans rightly hold us accountable. My performance was crap, but I promise you this will change."

Eagles coach Andy Reid does not have a Twitter, but you can almost guarantee that he was up as late or later than his players on Tuesday morning. The Eagles' season is unraveling, but when Reid addresses the media at his day-after news conference at noon on Tuesday, just don't hold your breath on hearing a different tune.

At the very least, Tuesday's early morning tweets from the players showed a bit of heart, which is more than they showed against the Saints. More so than Reid, they are the ones who control where the Eagles go from here.

I feel for those players that care...the offensive line is as offensive as I can ever remember...even going back a long way. Unless and until there is some semblance of OLine, Jackson, Celak and others who care are going to have the same result. It is insane to think that receivers can help protect a quarterback so he can do his job. Vick does not have a chance to be successful...and the Saints, when they saw an empty backfield...blitzed MV, our line could not give him even a second to do anything. The defense....that is another story...no real consistent pressure on their QB...is a recipe for disaster and it was that. Oh...we also have to learn to tackle, and get in position...this sounds like high school football not professional. High paid players that cannot tackle, block, get into position? Are you kidding me?

It seems to me this team started to disintegrate when it was rumored that Howie Roseman was going to take over as GM. I am not unilaterally blaming Roseman, but that seed germaniated into a sense of "entitlement" which permeated through the organization resulting in poor draft picks, Asante Samuel stating "fantasy football", bringing in a unecessary wildcard in Vick, and a coaching staff which hasnt had a coach promoted to a leadership role in another organization in almost 4 yrs.

Net is Upper Management took its eye off the ball and stopped being a football team and focused too much on being a "Business". Laurie is surrounding by "Ivy League" educated people and now the Eagles resemble that of failed Europe...all people that know theory but no one that understands the practical.

on a side note riley coopers trick play would have been funny had it been legal.enjoyed the attemt though, but joking asside i dont know bout anyone else but i know a teams in desperate mode when they start trying trick plays in the 2nd half and i may be wrong but i saw what i thought to be a lot of stupid attemts at what looked like trick plays.i was calling the same plays from the comforts of my own couch all thru the 2nd half and if its that easy for me its easy for anyone to do.next year is a long time away, and the year after that, and the year after that etc. etc.etc.,well! you get my drift.im upset because it dont look like no superbowl win anytime in the forseeable future.

I seem to remember reading an article two games ago stating the Eagles had ten games left and that was plenty of time to turn this thing around. Well, you'd better start turning things around soon, because a loss to the Cowboys next week and the Eagles would have to win five of their final seven games to finish a dismal 8-8. The only bright spot is that seven of the remaining eight games are against teams with losing records. But after last night's performance against the worst defense in the NFC the Eagles could manage only 13 points. There's only one team scoring fewer points than that in the NFL.

There was a time when at the beginning of each season the goal was to win a Super Bowl. Now the goal seems only to get into the playoffs. Is that what a "winning" season is now for the Eagles?

The major problem with this team year is they believe they're better than they really are. They hear every year from the so-called "experts" how the Eagles, the Cowboys, and the Chargers are all "loaded with such talent." Last year they were the "Dream Team!" And this year after opening the season with two wins, they're a contender. All they have to do is win half of their remaining games and with a 9-7 record they're on the to the Super Bowl! Then when they lose five of their next six games they still think and talk as if they're still a winner. Face it guys, just like the 'Boys and the Chargers, you ain't goin' nowhere!

And just like the 'Boys and the Chargers the problem is with management and coaching. Time for some major changes with the Eagles or we'll keep hearing the same thing every year.

Pack your bags Big Red. Enough of your brilliance by drafting 7th rounders and unsigned free agents thinking that you have a great team.
You have always and will continue outsmarting yourself. When D. Bell went into the game, I thought you might as well play me. He is one of your great choices, only to be a stiff. Please resign Andy. We would really appreciate it. Leave with some dignity left.

The issue is this team doesn't execute plays consistantly. Mistake after mistake after mistake. Nobody gets benched or cut. This issue has been a problem for Reid's entire tenure. It's why they didn't win with McNabb. Every defense we face bases their strategy on this fact. Give the Eagles the short stuff so they need to execute lots of plays to score and they will brake down before they score. They beat themselves. Add in the worst Eagles offensive line in the last 30 years and do some stants and they are dead. Also, notice that Vick ALWAYS says that the opponent did different things than they saw on film? Yeah, because they'll confuse Vick. Vick is essentially a little more than a year into reading defenses and reacting. It takes a couple years even if he had previous experience. He needs to stick to that approach because the Eagles will never win a Super Bowl if he improvises. The offensive line makes Vick's task almost impossible.

I don't usually comment, but after watching ALL of last nights debacle and reading almost all of the comments on philly.com last night, I can't help myself. I have been with this team through thick and thin, but what do we call THIS? We fans come back every single week looking for something, anything that can give us some type of sense of pride. A tweet ain't gonna do it, an "offensive" offensive line ain't gonna do it, a coach saying the same thing over and over ain't gonna do it, and neither will a defense that looks like they flat out can't tackle. Was last night's game REALLY against one of the worst defenses in NFL history? I sure couldn't tell. I know a lot of people say it, but I mean it, it's almost time to click out...

Too bad you can't judge a team's character by the strength of their tweets.

Can we trade Andy to the Canadian Football League so he can waste draft picks, timeouts & never be seen on the sidelines in the US again.

Either that or duct tape Andy to one of those wind turbines at the Linc so he's seen but never heard from again.
