Looking Back At Eagles-Cowboys
Paul Domowitch, Daily News NFL Columnist
Did You Notice?
--Marc Colombo, who had missed the last 7 games with a broken fibula, started at right tackle for the Cowboys in place of Doug Free.
--For the second week in a row, the Cowboys won the toss and elected to receive.
--All of the pre-snap movement by the Eagles’ defense early in the game.
--While Chris Clemons got credit for the sack of Romo on the Cowboys’, first possession, Tracy White actually set it in motion with an A-gap blitz, getting in untouched and forcing Romo out of the pocket.
--Donovan McNabb’s first throw – an out-route to Jeremy Maclin – was low. His second pass was nearly intercepted. Right guard Max Jean-Gilles was too slow sliding over to pick up a stunting DeMarcus Ware on a third-and-8 blitz on the play.
--Linebacker Chris Gocong, who didn’t play a single down on defense in the previous three games, was inserted early in the game and registered his second sack of the season on the Cowboys’ second possession.
--The intentional grounding penalty on McNabb late in the first-quarter. He had time to throw the ball away, but hung on to it too long.
--Gocong’s big tackle on Patrick Crayton’s second punt return late in the first quarter. Crayton picked up 11 yards. If Gocong didn’t trip him up, he would’ve gained much more than that.
--Eagles had the ball for just 3 minutes, 16 seconds in the first quarter. They started their 2 possessions at their own 10 and their own 5. Started beyond their own 25 just once in 14 possessions.
--Eagles had to waste a timeout with 9 minutes left in the second quarter because they only had 9 defenders on the field after Jason Witten’s 18-yard catch gave the Cowboys a first-and-goal at the 1.
--The Cowboys converted a third-and-9 (18-yard pass to Patrick Crayton) and a third-and-7 (17-yard pass to Roy Williams) on their second scoring drive and a third-and-10 on their third scoring drive (17-yard pass to Williams). They also converted a third-and-8 (12-yard pass to Miles Austin) on their first touchdown drive.
--Maclin replaced Macho Harris as the kickoff returner after he injured his knee on a return early in the second quarter.
--The Eagles’ continuing problems trying to defend wide-receiver screens. Their third touchdown of the game – a 6-yard pass to Miles Austin – came on a wide-receiver screen. Like many of the other ones, they threw it to Asante Samuel’s side. Tight end John Phillips blocked Will Witherspoon on the play, and Samuel, who refuses to press receivers, took himself out of the play.
--The unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Samuel that helped the Cowboys get close enough for a 48-yard Shaun Suisham field goal at the end of the first half.
--The 3 false-start penalties by the Eagles in the third quarter (2 by Jason Peters, 1 by Todd Herremans). The Eagles have had 8 false-start penalties in the 11 quarters since center Jamaal Jackson got hurt.
--McNabb’s 15-yard completion to Maclin on third-and-11 in the third quarter was only the Eagles second conversion of a third down of 10 yards or more in their last 4 games.
--Strongside linebacker Moise Fokou got sucked inside on Felix Jones’ 73-yard touchdown run.
--Brian Westbrook didn’t enter the game in the second half until there was 5:22 left. He didn’t have a single rushing attempt in the game.
By the Numbers
--The Eagles were outscored by the Cowboys in the first half, 44-7, the last 2 weeks. In their first 15 games this season, they outscored their opponents in the first two quarters, 273-142.
--The Eagles led the league in drives that started in their opponents’ territory this season (29). In their 3 games against the Cowboys, they had 1.
--In 3 games against the Cowboys, DeSean Jackson had just 8 receptions for 90 yards and 1 touchdown.
--In the last 10 quarters, Donovan McNabb completed just 44 of 89 passes (49.4). He had a sub-70 passer rating in 3 of his last 4 starts.
--McNabb has completed 60-plus percent of his passes in just 1 of his last 14 games against the Cowboys.
--The Eagles lost 3 fumbles Saturday after losing just 10 in their 16 regular-season games.

You think draft. What else can you do? stink-gull
By the numbers... The Cowboys beat the Eagles 3 times this season. Cowboys lead series 56 - 44. Cowboys have made the play-offs 30 times and the Eagles have made it 18. The Cowboys have played in 8 Superbowls, the Eagles 2 The Cowboys have won 5 Superbowls, the Eagles 0. This isn't a rivalry, it's a joke. Come back when you finally have a team. See you later doormat! phillyisajoke
Is there anybody not surprised the Eagles played so bad? Disco Dave
to phillyisajoke.. there are many people who aren't old like you and live in the past... your FIRST playoff win is what 14 Years? 1996 to 2010... Oh yeah 44-6 was too the EAGLES!! See I only went back One Year! Eagles beat Packers, 1960...when football was football not a pansy, don't hit me game, and before Stupor Bowl Greedy Owners ( like Dullazz #1 Greedbag $60 for a pizza?). Go Phillies.. oops does DullAzz have a Baseball Team? lensinilas
Look at the bright side. The Birds lost by 24 last week but only 20 last night. At that rate they should edge the Cowboys in the first meeting of the 2014 season. Could be sooner if they get some guys who want to tackle and a defensive coordinator who doesn't need on the job training. time4andytogo
how bout them flyers? yep thats the game i watched last night. i don't have esp but i knew after last week we were out of the playoffs. couldn't even bear to watch the eagles last night. love em always have but last night i refused to watch that train wreck. poorcarole- Hey 'phillyisajoke'...enjoy your one-and-done win, 'cause this is as far as y'all redneck idiots are goin'... What's left to do? Root like hell for the Vikings. Start thinking and talking about what we're going to do to improve that defense. As for the offense, we need to talk about the play-calling. Danfelf
This was no surprise. Dallas dominated the Eagles, everywhere! Time to use some draft picks and build up the offensive line. Too many holes and unpredictables. We need need some solid linemen. As for McNabb, the clock is ticking on his career and unfortunately he is rapidly winding down. dmatt
Banner's leadership and Lurie's lack of caused this spiral downhill. Starting with not paying market to the heart and soul of the team who has outplayed every contract he ever signed including the current. It continued with throwing 100 mil plus to the Andrews Sisters and their collage roommate Peters. JJ's rolling over in his grave. Classless, weasel carpetbaggers........ Earl J
Look on the bright side. At least all you Eagles fans can cheer for the Cowboys now. NFC East! NFC East! NFC East! CowboyInPhilly
In answer to Disco Dave, yeah I'm surprised Philly played so bad. Not surprised Dallas won, or played so well. Philly got its 11 wins by beating the teams it was supposed to beat, and never looked like a top eight team. Still, it was a mistake-filled effort. Playcalling didn't seem to make use of things the Giants did to the Cowboys. Don't imagine Brad Childress will make the same mistake. tacklinjoe- Time to let McNabb go. Lets see what Kolb can do. I would love to see Westbrook get a chance to be the featured back next year. Stewart Bradley will be back. Hopefully, The Andrews sisters will be motivated and healthy. The Eagles need to address the right DE, safety, outside LB positions in the offseason. Oh, and they need a center, since Jackson will not be able to be counted on next year (see Stacy Andrews on how you recover from an ACL at the end of the year). And this offseason will be executed without the help of Heckert. It should be interesting. arrowamy
WHERE TO BEGIN? - BRING A TEAM TO TEXAS NEXT TIME - TWITTER THIS - SPIT ON YOUR SELF NEXT TIME, THAT MAY HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF YOU WINNING. HIRE MORE FELONS - TRY PASSING MORE AND FINALLY SO HOME, GROW UP SPARROWS! TRAVIS1
1. Reid should have put Vick in after the first half. 2. if the pass coverage was that good, and Dallas was double teaming receivers, why couldn't McNabb find the open man? 3. what happened to the screen, they barely used it. 4. what happened to Reid's trick plays, they only had one with Vick 5. more blitzing! 6. what happened to Westbrook, he barely did anything! 7. what happened to Celeck? The Eagles should have gone all the way this year. Their defense was solid, they had tons of offensive weapons, and McNabb had a good year overall. Are we ever gonna win a Super Bowl? philly forever
loosing jamal jackson so late in the season destroyed the OL. having to play away with a new center against the best defense in football was impossible to overcome. yes mcnabb continues to come up small in big games. it would have helped if he was passing the ball like a top five qb. he didn't and couldn't. the defense was small the entire year especially against playoff teams. the draft and free agency will help. the nfc east remains powerful in the conference and will be stronger next year. i vote for a change at qb and both safety positions. JACK V
The Eagles need to use every draft pick this year on defense. McNabb is done put a fork in him. Most of the game he had plenty of time to throw the ball but he can't make a quick decision and let it go. Romo gets the snap and 1,2,3,4,5 it's gone and he hits his receivers on stride unlike Mcnbb who can't make those throws. Andy has given Mcnabb every possible chance but he always finds some way to fail. Tell me another coach that would have stuck with a QB that only completed 4 pass in the first half? If you lose this game you go home. He should have been benched at half time and to bad about his shallow feelings. The Cowboys had the ball for 40 mins out of 60 in the game. Why because McNabb could make the plays. There were plays to made but when the ball is being thrown at your feet, over your head, and behind you it is tuff. He burned the defense out by 3 plays and a punt. Fans who support McNabb say you don't know what Kolb can do. Well we all know what McNabb can do. He is the best QB at winning games that mean nothing and the worst QB at winning games that have to be won!!!! Fast Eddie
Look, in this world, there are terrorists, murderers, satanists, nazis, etc. Still, the bottom of the barrel are Iggles fans. Enjoy the off season! chucklace
I'm a Giant fan, I must confess. I rooted for the Cowboys because I despise the Cowboys but loathe the Eagles. You know ,typical NFC East stuff. However, when I saw George W. Bush glad handing Jery Jones, I felt like Judas.I know we hate each other but,I'm sure we'll all be Viking fans next week. Bubba4- Check this out Cowboy. It'll be a cold day in hell when I root for the Cowboys. Go Vikings.
It's all Spadaro's fault. The Truth Hurts
A case of the Eagles not having: a solid enough offensive line; a solid running game; shaky linebacking; inadequate secondary. To hang yesterday's defeat on McNabb would be a horrible mistake---he was scrambling for his life all night. When your front is getting manhandled all night, you have no chance to win, and that's the main area in which the Cowboys were vastly superior to the Eagles. Quarterbacking and wide receivers are now the LEAST of the Eagles' problems. john newlin
Guys, don't worry. Put down the snowballs. We have a little room on the back of our bandwagon. Go Cowboys! P.S. - I am a fan of the team, but like many Cowboys fans...hate the owner so anti Jones stuff doesn't bother me and whatever it is, I have said much worse. chucklace
Plain and simple. Regime change. Bring in new coaches and get rid of McN. Everything else will take care of itself. 11 years of no SB is enough. momzer
Rest in Peace Eagle fans... or not... thendler
The bottom line is that the Eagles simply weren't good enough to overcome their deficiences to beat the Cowboys. It's not personal, it's simply fact. 3-0 in one year says it all. Your team won't get over the hump until Reid is gone. He failed to attack the Cowboys weakness - run defense. He played right into their hands by making McNabb try to win it behind a weakened line with rookies at the skill positions. It's always easier for a line to run block when they're in a hostile enviorment. Question: Why draft McCoy if you're not going to use him when Westbrook was hurt? The Boys are in no way the greatest either, but they have your number and are on a roll. If Minn uses the same game plan and ignores Peterson the Vikes will be thinking about the draft too in 7 days. Bobby in Bedford TX
oh yeah, the guy you should really get on is the idiot who spit on the star. You should treat him like that Bartman guy in Chicago who cost the Cubs a CHANCE at a World Series. All week the media pushed that video in front of the Cowboys and fans. They shouldn't have needed any extra incentive but that helped everyone down here refocus on hating Philly again when a week before we were just happy to be in the playoffs. And fans (like me) wanted the team to lose so Wade would be fired because we thought we weren't talented enough to win it all this year anyway. Believe me it was louder in the stadium because of that spit video then it would have been with out it. Take your angst out on the Spadaro guy for helping Dallas. thanks - sorta - now we have another year of boring a@@ Wade. Bobby in Bedford TX- I'm loving every second of this. I can't hear you Turds bringing up that 44-6 score, Oh maybe cuz we destroyed punk behinds 3 times this year. As I mentioned before the Cowboys and their True Blue Fans don't measure success by beating the Eagcacas we measure it by Superbowl Trophies of which you have none! Stick your heads in a hole like ostriches this winter cuz there wont be any Eagles soaring in Miami! Cry Eagles Cry cuz we lost to America's Team, Cry Eagles Cry cuz we'll never have a Superbowl Team! Dallas Big D Doomsday Cowboys areee Baaack! To all you Cowboys Haters I've got two words for you S**k It!! Mojados1
From this Dallas boy: Wow! The "air guitar" in the tunnel! Unbelievable. I looked at the wifey and she said Uh-Oh. This so reminded us of Romo the last couple of years. Head not in game before the game. Hat on backwards, laughing at mistakes and on the sidelines, trip to Mexico before playoff game. These guys are paid millions to remove head from booty and be professional at all times. Romo got counseling from some of the old Dallas pros and look at the difference. Philli needs some fresh meat at qb. Hope you wait a couple of years though. whaletail
We're going to have to do a better job.....are you gonna eat that hot dog ? We have to execute better.....burp......McNabb is our quarterback and I'll have to do a better job...blah, blah, blah......we don't need talented players, it's my schemes that win and besides......pass the mustard......as long as I keep Mr. Laurie 40 million under the cap I'm not going anywhere.....burp...... Fat-Andy- Karma. Nuff said. sadim
I have been a avid supporter of the franchise as a whole for a very long time, but after watching the debacle last night i am disgusted. Plain and simple. Its time for a change at QB, i have supported #5 for ever, but that was pitiful. I am sick of losin. As for phillyisajoke's post, dude your a clown shoe. your players are always coked up and on roids, i no i played arena there. enjoy cheatin dallas. boxxxcutta
Time for Big Red to leave the shed--he doesn't have a clue--Time for Donnovan to retire Neil Schmerling
Wait til next year boys. So it's an early exit this year. That's alright. The main things are this 1) Andy is really fat and 2) The Cowboys are moving on! Go Cowboys! chucklace- Question. As I type this, NE is losing to Baltimore 33-14 with 9:00 left in the game. Does this score sound familiar? Do you honestly believe anyone in NE will be calling for Brady or Bellichick to be fired? What's the difference...And keep 1 thing in. No matter what happened yesterday, in the past or in the future, Dallass Sucks.. They always have, they always will. dedhed
Teams that just waxed a loser team in a playoff game sucks and they always sucked for sure. 8 Superbowls and 5 wins is awful. I wish Dallas had the history and current greatness of the Iggles. chucklace

The 2009-2010 NFL football season confirmed two things about Philadelphia Eagles and the fans that cheer for their success. First, the Eagles are simply not a very good football team. The media's depiction of the Eagles as a superior organization, an elite outfit, a man-o-war more than capable and deserving of multiple Super Bowl wins is obviously and absolutely asinine and false. Granted, the Eagles lost to a very good Dallas Cowboy's football team (3x); it's the fact they are void of passion combined with their mediocre talent that is a perfect equation for failure no matter who they might be playing. In regards to Philadelphia fans, they simply are not very smart and their aggressive personalties usually spoil any sympathy and empathy one may of have as they stand in the dim falling light post-game after another playoff loss screaming obscenities through a sad haze of broken dreams and vodka as their black hearts sluggishly pump dark blood in mysterious circulation. Maybe next year, but probably not. Forty-four Super Bowls without an Eagle's trophy is hard to raise a glass to but I'm a Cowboy fan anyway. Love me three times baby. Love me thrice today. Titus
Last night, even with the crowd noise, you could hear the Eagles sucking! Seriuosly though, everybody is jumping on McNabb's case about the game, but if you can't run the ball effectively and take some of the heat off the pass rush, then it's hard to win. The Eagles did well to draft two elite receivers the past two drafts now they need to get a game-breaking running back. jaywo
Thanks, "spitcam" Dave! stink-gull
