Lito wants new deal before season, agent says

POSTED: Thursday, July 31, 2008, 11:38 PM

Amid the conversations about Brian Westbrook's contract, Shawn Andrews' absence and the rash of injuries early in camp, there has been little discussion about Lito Sheppard's situation.

In a video interview available via SprintTV and posted on YouTube, agent Drew Rosenhaus says his new client, Sheppard, wants his contract addressed before the start of the season.

"His contract, like Brian Westbrook's, is now outdated, having outperformed the deal," Rosenhaus said. "We have talked to the Eagles and would like to work out a contract with them ... This is nothing new. This is something the Eagles have been discussing with Lito's previous agents, dating back to last year."

Sheppard, of course, is potentially facing a diminished role with the offseason acquisition of Asante Samuel. The Eagles argue that this is really just the second year of the extension Sheppard signed in 2004, which binds him through 2011. And if the $8.7 million signing bonus he got back then seems like ancient history to Sheppard today, well, that's just too bad. Of course, the other side of that coin would be that Sheppard's $2 million base salary this season is not what Pro Bowl corners with more recent deals are making.

It will be interesting to see if Rosenhaus is able to reach what he termed a "mutually benefical agreement in the near future."

Let Sheppard show he can stay healthy and then talk of a new deal should come naturally.

out performed? that is laughable. like you said stay healthy for one season. look if he were a top corner in the nfl a team would have given them a good deal to get him.

his agent is simply trying to capitalize on the recent rash of hamstring injuries (2 legs, 2 injuries) that have sidelined Asante Samuel, which no doubt has drawn some concern among Eagles management about his durability now being question; Samuel's reputation was one of 'Superman" endurance. Its a smart move tactically by his agent, but I doubt the eagles are foolish enough to fall for this approach; unless of course they feel that maybe samuel is NOT as strong and as durable as advertised.

When Lito underperforms - as he has, due to injury - prorate his salary and take away a few million. Poor little Lito. Scrape by on 25 mil. Just like Brian, greed and envy. Have all values disappeared from sports? Almost. yes almost

These greedy players are taking the fun out of the game by showing all they care about is the money not winning, what a shame. The guy has been hurt every year and now he wants more money.

Rosenjerk must be kidding he's got to be and Lito should count his blessing, play out the season healthy and go from there.

I can't believe he thinks his contract has been outperformed. Lito needs to stay healthy throughout a full season, before he can even "think" about his contract being renewed, and then he might have to prove it through another year...

Come on Lito, give me a break...Is ego and money all that matters to you? Keep going and you will be like TO in my book...

I always want to shower after hearing Rosenhaus speak. Do you think he cares about Lito? Lito is nothing more than a paycheck and he receives squat unless a new contract is created. Rosenhaus is a plague to the fans of this game. Lito got an 8.7 mill bonus for signing the deal. It is funny that Rosenhaus doesn't mention that when he talks about fair compensation. Rosenhaus is dirt.

He's getting paid to perform. You can't perform if your not on the field playing. If he wants more money he's got to prove he is worth it this season.

no he doesnt care about lito. he knows he gets no money until lito signs a new contract. same deal with TO. TO's contract was with a different agent and rosenhaus needed one with his name attached. He's scum, almost as bad as boras. Rosenahus' only tactics: sit out, and complain. and he always makes this stuff public (interview on youtube) almost like he's trying to make himself look like a good guy to everyone so the fans go 'yeah, give that guy more money.'

Rosenhaus is a cancer to the sport of football. Is anyone surprised that the nonsense has already started? Everyone knew once Rosenhaus became Lito's agent that we were going to have to deal with his garbage. Way to go Drew.

Let’s see 8.7 mil signing bonus, plus 2 mil a year over two years, equals 12.7 mil. 16 games a year. 2 years equals 32 games. 32 games minus 14 games, equals 18 games. 18 games divided by 12.7 mil equals 705,555.55 a game. Lito you make more per game then I made in a life time and you want me to feel sorry for you? Lito play the games. Think how blessed you are to have made so much and given so little. We fans do not feel sorry for you. Make two seasons with out injury, then talk.

That's right. Keep taking management's side in the Lito-Eagles feud and management will figure they can keep giving low-ball contracts to players and reap high-dollar payoffs from fans. Normally, I'd say a contract's a contract. In the NFL, though, a contract is a contract only until management says it isn't a contract by cutting the player. The Eagles are the Super Bowl champs at playing the contract game...and nothing else.

good player, but not worth the hassle he brings in the terms of bad legs and the lost time that comes with it. want to see him stay, but that is a decision he must make for less dough, cause he ain't getting the big bucks from the birds.

Lito Sheppard has not outperformed anything. He has missed 14 games over a three year span and needs to pay eagles management almost a whole year in salary for services not rendered. These athletes today want management to restructure their contract mid-way through a contract only due to the fact they feel undervalued.. Well guess what if I went to my boss half-way through my performance review and said I am undervalued and would like to be paid at a higher level he would look at me and say we will revisit this in 4 months on your review date and discuss what we can do, or he can ask me to leave; we are not in position to re-evaluate your ccurrent salary and you may have to seek employment elsewhere...Sheppard has missed too many games his leverage is nill....I think sheppard should just pack his suitcase and walk away no words no animosity and tell Eagle management I appreciate the initial offer, I will write a check to you for my time missed with injury that you paid me for while I could not play, now I am seeking more money elsewhere. Eagles management should not have to deal with his nonesense at this point. He signed a fair offer at the time and now is crying for a change to his worth. You cannot have players on your team demanding changes, asking for restructuring, this affects morale, harmony and team chemistry. Lito, Westbrook, and Andrews all need to packaged in a crate with a pretty pink bow and sent out of here and replaced with guys that are team oriented, high work ethic athletes, who believe the team and winnning is paramount over the individual cry-babying and whining of individual endeavors....
