The Eagles got tight end L.J. Smith back from a back injury as they began preparing Wednesday to play the Redskins this weekend. Running back Brian Westbrook made it through the morning walkthrough; it was unclear the extent to which he intended to participate in practice. It didn't sound as if he would do much, but Westbrook said: "I'm close. Getting closer daily."

P.M. UPDATE: Westbrook was listed as a limited practice participant. "It went well, it went well," Westbrook said afterward. "It went as well as could be expected."

Quarterback Donovan McNabb indicated he is thinking he will have Westbrook this weekend, until Westbrook really practices at full speed, no one knows that for sure.

Last year, the Redskins prepared for the Eagles by using practice squad corner Byron Westbrook to mimic his older brother, and the younger Westbrook is again one of the Redskins' extras. Yesterday, Brian Westbrook said he didn't think that gimmick could really help Washington. "He's not as good as me," Brian joked.

McNabb acknowledged his contused chest is still pretty sore, and that it is something that is "not going to get healed in a week or two," but McNabb felt his throwing motion wasn't restricted against Chicago and he doesn't expect it to be hindered this weekend. UPDATE: McNabb also was listed as limited in practice.

There was much discussion Wednesday of how Sunday's loss brought back unpleasant memories of last season, and close losses to teams that didn't always seem to have superior talent.

"You can't play 3 1/2 quarters of good football and not capitalize at the end," McNabb said.

Eagles coach Andy Reid said DE Victor Abiamiri has gotten the screws removed from his wrist and should be able to practice soon. Reid said RG Shawn Andrews was being examined by a back specialist today. UPDATE: Andrews said he was encouraged by the way his back is feeling and by what he heard from the specialist, whom he declined to identify.

Also, punter Sav Rocca has been named NFC Special Teams Player of the Month, the first Eagles punter to win the honor. Also the first Eagle from Australia to win anything. And the first Eagle named "Sav."

Well our Andy (our answer to Vince Lomabardi) made another goal line play from his vast knowledge of football from his famous "notebook". Andy you are one of the most loved offensive coaches by all the leagues' defensive coordinators!

Wow, this town is getting feisty, see what bad play calling and a soft QB who wouldn't step up last Sunday night will do !!! That loss is going to come back and bite us, mark my word !!! The defense better carry us on Sunday because we are already hearing how the chest bruise isn't healing and neither is Westbrook !!!

This offense can't afford an "average" tight end. Westbrook's aleady impressive numbers would mushroom if we had a tight end who could block and who was actually a threat to catch the ball once in a while. LJ plays like he's afraid of hurting himself.

I an still sick about the bears game...the birds defense most of the time, embarrassed them...but they still gave up three touches and made Orten look infinitetly better than he really is...as for the goal line failure...ugh!!!..stupid playcalling, bad execution, wrong personnel...but with all of that, the proverbial bottom line is that i am afraid they are the same old, pathetically inept birds, that we have lived with for so much of the last few seasons...in a game where today the tight end is so important, we have a zero...and make no mistake that is what he is...we have westbrook ("westy"... are you kidding??)..he is superbly talented, but oh so fragile...and sadly without him, against the bears the O seemed lost...booker???yich!!!.too many injuries to too many key players...a kicker who used to be iron man in his accuracy is turning into a rust bucket...but if you step back, they look like the same, dull and vanilla group we are so familiar with...how boring, they never seem to be able to pull out a close win...and it is especially sickening that the bears did it again...most of all, the birds took the glitter of my joy over the success of the Phillies...how shameful.

Hey Walt, I feel your pain. The players change, the coaches change, the uniforms evolve, but the team never does. Of course they are better then back in the 60s and 70s, but they always seem to have the same tendancies. The best years for this team are over. Because of Rieds arrogance and McNabbs choking, I'll never see a championship.

My first Eagle game was in a place I think was called Shibe Park. What I can say 100%, is Tommy McDonald was a rookie, along with Sonny J, Billy Ray Barnes...ya get the idea ! For decades the Eagles were a laughing stock. Trading Sonny Jurgeson for Norm Sneed...come on now ! "Young" Eagles fans have been spoiled. Reid and McNabb have given "us" a decade of winning more games than any decade in the past. OK, Nobody is perfect ! But Give these guys a break and ENJOY what they have / are done/doing !!!!

I am an Eagles fan for 55 years, I attended games at franklin field, the Vet then stopped my season tickets. The eagles broke my heart many, many times. BUT THE FACT REMAINS: THE ARE THE SAME OLD EAGLES! Winning may come when the head job quarterback is gone. take andy along! PLEASE

LJ is at best average at tight end. 8-8 this season and Andy gets fired for never being able to learn from his mistakes.

Oh come on, LJ Smith is an average tight end who gets hurt a lot. They guy disappears for weeks then has a good game. Time to call him what he is: AVERAGE. Oh yeah, he can't block either.

Yo, lay off the Cuz. The Werewolf is the sniffer. The G-Lew is ridiculous, nonetheless. Nicknames should be reserved for producers.

Westy is as lame as G-Lew, coined by the Cuz as part of his usual jock sniffing antics

Where is the optimism? The Eagles will rebound and be better than ever. They will finish in the division 4-2 (the other split will come from the giants) They will finish the season probably 11-5 maybe 12-4. They have the potential to go on a ridiculous win streak. Their schedule is not that difficult. Curtis will be back soon and Brown will continue to get better, LJ (gulp) will factor in real soon. I think they should look at another RB, they don't appear to have much faith in Booker. The defense is ranked in the top five. They are going to be fine. They will be playoff bound. Mark my words.

mebphila - guess you haven't watch the eagles the past few seasons? reid hangs on to players to justify drafting them where he did(LJ smith > witten, 3rd pick tony hunt being on the roster)

Right you are gordy. 10-6 or 9-7 is best they will do and it won't get us into the playoffs because they are going to have at least 4 losses in the division.

daveH you forgot Clemons. They will probably win this week because of the emotional let down the skins will have after just beating the cowgirls and maybe next, but I think the loss last week will come back to bite them later in the season. I see them at best splitting within the division and at least 1 other. 10-6 may not get us to the playoffs this year and 10-6 is a best case scenerio not a given

LJ gets in the end zone this weekend - at least 1 time. Whether that will quell his critics or not remains to be seen ...
Comment removed.
