Kolb wants his chance but will be a 'team player'
Daily News staff
Kevin Kolb says he is trying to avoid the talk about the quarterback situation with the Eagles as much as he can, but his view on the situation is clear.
"I want to be a starter in the NFL," Kolb, a Texas native, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "That's my No. 1 goal right now. I want that opportunity. But I'm going to be a team player. I trust (coach) Andy (Reid). I trust his decisions and his ability to see what's in the future and plan out my career the right way. Hopefully, we'll do those things to get me on the field at some point, not knowing when it's going to be."
Kolb said he has not spoken with Reid about the situation since the season ended.
Kolb started two games when Donovan McNabb was injured, posting back-to-back 300-yard games and then did not play the rest of the season.
"It was tough, because I really felt like this year was the best as a player I’ve ever been," Kolb said.
"Coming out of the preseason and having those [regular-season] games for some momentum and finding my groove at this level, I felt like I could have been a good, consistent starter and wanted to face that challenge. At the same time, Donovan had an unbelievable year. He was very consistent this year, and we went 11-5. I see both sides; I always have. I’m always a team player first. At the same time, I wish I could have been out there."
As for the report that the young players went to Kolb instead of McNabb this season for advice, Kolb said he had built "good chemistry" and "good rapport" with DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and the team’s other wideouts, because "you see the future, and you see yourself working with them."
But Kolb also said there is no animosity between he and McNabb.
"I’m doing whatever’s best at that moment for the Eagles; that’s what I always keep in mind," Kolb said.
As for the Eagles' view on the quarterback situation, Joe Banner talked about that following the press conference to announce Howie Roseman's promotion to GM. Paul Domowitch has the story here.

In other quarterback related opinion and developments, Tim Kawakami, of the San Jose Mercury News and formerly the Eagles beat writer for the Daily News, writes that the Niners should make a run at McNabb.
"If McNabb hits the trade market, there definitely will be several bidders. But what team — aside from the 49ers — can afford a first-day pick and is built for a big run in almost every way, just waiting for a playoff-quality quarterback?
Maybe Minnesota, if Brett Favre departs permanently. Maybe Carolina. Perhaps Al Davis might put the Raiders in that category, but I don't."
- Igottsdatswagga Who's stats are any more padded than McNabbs such as that screen pass (or was it a lateral?) to Jackson that went for 58 yards courtesy of Jackson yet McNabb is credited with the TD even though he only went 3 for 10 for 78 yards? There are many more exsamples throughout the year when McNabb throws a shovel pass to a receiver and the receiver takes it 30-35 yards for a TD which McNabb benefits from. When the He!! is the last time McNabb threw a "fade" in to the end zone? And you can ask Bret Farve if the Saints Defense gives "very little" pressure, but please wait until his bruises heal. essell
essell:o a little research before you start running your mouth, mcnabb who had is best stat year of his career., threw more 20+ yard passes then any other QB this year, get a clue buddy!! i am not a huge mcnabb fan but lets not make stuff up.. dont be a child, grow up.. so now we are going to judge mcnabb on the pro bowl? really? so let me get this straight mcnabb throws a 10 yard pass to jackson that he turns into a 50+ touchdown and it is all jackson, kolb does the same thing earlier in the year literlly the same play and its all kolb, again with the double standard, padded stats, i would love to know the YAC for kolb in those two games.. bleed green forever
klob is right,it's his time now! andy/mcass time is up!let the yound bucks play ball/it better than going with mcass, give klob his due, play the man... jamison2121
Trade 5 & Start Kolb, keep Vick for backup & Wildcat! Sign Garcia as 3rd QB! ChangeISNeeded
Igot is just one of those fans who is satisfied if the team makes the playoffs. Exactly the type of fan Joe Banner loves as they keep lining his pockets with money$$$$$. mibrze
Let's be honest, do any of us feel comfortable with either McNabb or Kolb starting next year? With McNabb you'll get the same, probably winning record, good stats and then bomb in the playoffs. With Kolb you get? Unknown. He could be great or he could be awful. How about keep Vick and send some dogs down the field and give him the ball, he'll go after them at a 100 Miles per hour. neddyflanders- I thought Kolb looked pretty good against Baltimore last year; he was moving the ball down the field with precision. He got picked off in the endzone by future HOFer Reed (who also picked off Manning 2x in the playoffs this year). In the Saints game, one of Kolb's picks was because Celek stopped his route short instead of taking the correct angle on the aggressive DB; Kolb had properly thrown the ball to Celek before he turned. Celek was probably used to finishing his route, turn, face Donovan, and wait for the ball to be thrown. I think Kolb might turn out to be pretty good, for whatever team gives him a chance. Donovan's got a great long ball, but his inacuracy on the short passes have really stopped a lot of drives early, and prevented receivers from catching the ball in stride. phillyPA

Comment removed.- No one is saying that all of the Eagles' failures were due to McNabb. I think this is a discussion of when Kolb should get a chance to start, for whatever team. McNabb was good, but not clutch in the big games. I remember he threw back to back pics in the endzone in SB XXXVIII, the first one negated by penalty. Those were two terrible passes. Let the country laugh at Eagle fans who think McNabb's time has come and gone; they haven't been watching every play of every Eagle game for 11 years, just the Sportcenter highlights. phillyPA
BGF, without looking it up I know KK's YAC yards were a huge part of the yardage he gained and I don't think any pass was longer than 15 yds in the air, if that many. IMO it that is both a pro and a con. On the pro side I could care less about who gets credit for stats as long as the play works and there is a TD. Your double standard statement is 100% true, BTW. All QBs get credit for YAC, ALL of them except when it's anybody other than DM the QB is praised for "hitting the guy in stride" or there is some reference to "accuracy". Who cares, it's a TD, be happy! If KK's "accuracy gets us TDs that way I'm OK with it. The con is that KK has to rely on YAC because he can't throw the deep ball. That will allow the opposing D to concentrate on a 15 yard area because they won't have a fear of anything over their head. So I see a trade off between DM and KK. The trade is the pro of some supposed improvement in accuracy [which I still am not convinced of] vs. the con of losing DM's arm strength and air time. Pick your poison. tpizza
wiff, how can that be when you called the second Giant game the most important game since the SB? How'd DM do in that game? I forgot. I'll bet you want to forget. You're cherry picking again wiff. Tsk, tsk. tpizza
The Eagles need a complete overhaul.A new head coach is first on the list of many changes this "cannot get it done" football team. This is the NFL for gods sake. Get rid of Andy Reid and the Eagles stand a better shot at picking up game players. This group of players has no belief in McNabb and Reid. The trickle down effect is paralyzing players and fans. daffydux

A lot of these comments on here about McNabb are ridiculous and I understand the REAL premise behind wanting Kolb over #5. To blame #5 for not being a clutch QB is just plain stupid if he wasn’t clutch do you think this team would have gotten as far as they have with all the duds that have surrounded him for 10 of his 11 years here. Let’s talk about the clutch bone headed coaching and the clutch dropped passes that could have won us many of those playoff games, Oh wait, I forgot the clutch D that couldn’t seal the wins, when they were supposed to. As I said from the start some of you are ridiculous and you need to get real. Roll back the clock, put your golden boys Manning or Brady in the same mess for that long and see where they’d be. Maybe it would be more acceptable from them. realtruth
