Kolb wants his chance but will be a 'team player'

Kevin Kolb says he is trying to avoid the talk about the quarterback situation with the Eagles as much as he can, but his view on the situation is clear.

"I want to be a starter in the NFL," Kolb, a Texas native, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "That's my No. 1 goal right now. I want that opportunity. But I'm going to be a team player. I trust (coach) Andy (Reid). I trust his decisions and his ability to see what's in the future and plan out my career the right way. Hopefully, we'll do those things to get me on the field at some point, not knowing when it's going to be."

Kolb said he has not spoken with Reid about the situation since the season ended.

Kolb started two games when Donovan McNabb was injured, posting back-to-back 300-yard games and then did not play the rest of the season.

"It was tough, because I really felt like this year was the best as a player I’ve ever been," Kolb said.

"Coming out of the preseason and having those [regular-season] games for some momentum and finding my groove at this level, I felt like I could have been a good, consistent starter and wanted to face that challenge. At the same time, Donovan had an unbelievable year. He was very consistent this year, and we went 11-5. I see both sides; I always have. I’m always a team player first. At the same time, I wish I could have been out there."

As for the report that the young players went to Kolb instead of McNabb this season for advice, Kolb said he had built "good chemistry" and "good rapport" with DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and the team’s other wideouts, because "you see the future, and you see yourself working with them."

But Kolb also said there is no animosity between he and McNabb.

"I’m doing whatever’s best at that moment for the Eagles; that’s what I always keep in mind," Kolb said.

As for the Eagles' view on the quarterback situation, Joe Banner talked about that following the press conference to announce Howie Roseman's promotion to GM. Paul Domowitch has the story here.

In other quarterback related opinion and developments, Tim Kawakami, of the San Jose Mercury News and formerly the Eagles beat writer for the Daily News, writes that the Niners should make a run at McNabb.

"If McNabb hits the trade market, there definitely will be several bidders. But what team — aside from the 49ers — can afford a first-day pick and is built for a big run in almost every way, just waiting for a playoff-quality quarterback?

Maybe Minnesota, if Brett Favre departs permanently. Maybe Carolina. Perhaps Al Davis might put the Raiders in that category, but I don't."

Let the bidding begin in the NFC West for DMc----could be any of them---they all need a QB. Do an auction.

I have McNabb fatigue. I'll take 6-10 for a year if it means a chance at winning a SB down the road. Mr.Smith is right SAVE THE WORMS!

NO ONE KNOWS anything about what he can do. Once a QB is the regular starter, teams game plan for his weaknesses. The odds of Kolb being a winning NFL starter are pretty slim. The bottom line is that the number of QBs in NFL history with McNabb's success is tiny compared to the number of flops. The odds are much better that Kolb will flop rather than be a star.

"Coming out of the preseason… I felt like I could have been a good, consistent starter…”, Feeling and being are two differing worlds. Kolb wants to be a starter, and that should be his goal, at the same time he should be glad he’s had the chance to sit and learn instead of being thrown into the fire with nothing around you like the much maligned #5. Hope fully he walks the walk whether it’s here or elsewhere. People act as though this kid is Mark Sanchez, posting inflated #s against a prevent D in week 2 and a VERY weak D in week 3 shouldn’t go to his head or those who are crying for this kid to start. Personally I say keep Don for another year and draft some real talent at that position to groom. If he gets the nod, well at least he’ll have talent to work with.

BroadcastingWisdom is grammatically correct. It kills me when journalism majors on WIP say "have went" instead of "have gone."

Let McNabb throw a ball at a large map of the U.S.A Were it lands,he'll play.I'm sure he'll be playing for the Atlantic ocean.

I think a lot of people simply want to see a white quarterback do well.

What you people are failing to address is of the all the problems the Eagles have on the team, Don, is not even close to being near the top. This team is not has other other HUGE problems to address first...This defense is at least one really good DE, at least one LB, a FS, and one or two corners away from being dominant again...

I have always struggled with grammar. Grammar not a strong point, but above average spelling. I have a high IQ. I don't read blogs. Comments written by people here give me enough nonsense to chew on. So what, if Kolb can't play, the Eagles will get a high pick down the road. No risk, no reward.

"But Kolb also said there is no animosity between he and McNabb." Um, "between he"? Really? Really? Both the writer and the editor let this line get through? For the record, it should have said "between him and McNabb."

No fear to start Kolb. The football geniuses that ARE the Eagles front office will keep a good team around him. This is NOT your dad's Eagles. The Eagles of 15+ years ago were run by clods.
