Kolb wants his chance but will be a 'team player'

POSTED: Sunday, January 31, 2010, 9:15 AM

Kevin Kolb says he is trying to avoid the talk about the quarterback situation with the Eagles as much as he can, but his view on the situation is clear.

"I want to be a starter in the NFL," Kolb, a Texas native, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "That's my No. 1 goal right now. I want that opportunity. But I'm going to be a team player. I trust (coach) Andy (Reid). I trust his decisions and his ability to see what's in the future and plan out my career the right way. Hopefully, we'll do those things to get me on the field at some point, not knowing when it's going to be."

Kolb said he has not spoken with Reid about the situation since the season ended.

Kolb started two games when Donovan McNabb was injured, posting back-to-back 300-yard games and then did not play the rest of the season.

"It was tough, because I really felt like this year was the best as a player I’ve ever been," Kolb said.

"Coming out of the preseason and having those [regular-season] games for some momentum and finding my groove at this level, I felt like I could have been a good, consistent starter and wanted to face that challenge. At the same time, Donovan had an unbelievable year. He was very consistent this year, and we went 11-5. I see both sides; I always have. I’m always a team player first. At the same time, I wish I could have been out there."

As for the report that the young players went to Kolb instead of McNabb this season for advice, Kolb said he had built "good chemistry" and "good rapport" with DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and the team’s other wideouts, because "you see the future, and you see yourself working with them."

But Kolb also said there is no animosity between he and McNabb.

"I’m doing whatever’s best at that moment for the Eagles; that’s what I always keep in mind," Kolb said.

As for the Eagles' view on the quarterback situation, Joe Banner talked about that following the press conference to announce Howie Roseman's promotion to GM. Paul Domowitch has the story here.

In other quarterback related opinion and developments, Tim Kawakami, of the San Jose Mercury News and formerly the Eagles beat writer for the Daily News, writes that the Niners should make a run at McNabb.

"If McNabb hits the trade market, there definitely will be several bidders. But what team — aside from the 49ers — can afford a first-day pick and is built for a big run in almost every way, just waiting for a playoff-quality quarterback?

Maybe Minnesota, if Brett Favre departs permanently. Maybe Carolina. Perhaps Al Davis might put the Raiders in that category, but I don't."

The time is now for Kolb to start and develop with the Jacksons, Maclins, Celecks and others. Now more than ever, let's move on and trade Don while his stock is up.

Between HIM and McNabb. I know it's the weekend, but come on. That's 6th grade grammar.

I believe everything Kolb says here. I also believe that if he doesn't get to start this fall, he will find another team next January, even if he's promised a starting position for 2011. If the Niners want McNabb, I have a hunch he's available for a first rounder. Someone up above caught the old grammar problem again. That's the problem with going to college -- people go in knowing from birth how to use the objective case and come out saying "between you and I." And these things in the newspaper go through copy editors as well. Hey, educated journalists, it's okay to say "me," "him," and "them." Really. Makes you sound smarter than the average college grad.

Ron Paul: How do you know Kolb is the "clear choice"? My point is NOBODY knows what Kolb will be. Stop acting like you do. I hope you're right, but how can you be so sure? One last thing: you call McNabb a "clown". Well, I hope you are consistent and call Favre a clown, too. I just don't get you folks. I bet you hate McNabb more than you hate any other NFL player. I don't get it...

Kolb is a straight out leader which the Eagles need badly.

Kevin my advice is get out of dodge. You could be starting for several teams in the NFL and you don't want to get stuck behind the sick marriage of Reid and McDud. Reid's blind loyalty to a has been/never was aging QB says that McDud will be the Eagles QB for the foreseeable future. That is why after over 60 years as an Eagles fan(17 as a season's ticket holder) I am rooting for the Redskins until McDud is gone. When he is gone or you are starting I will be back.

Looks like this article woke up the Kolb haters...of course they have nothing on which to base their hatred other than he he might show up their idol McNabb. Ooooo, that will hurt.
