Agent: Rule Limited Kolb Deal to 1 Year

POSTED: Thursday, April 29, 2010, 3:49 PM

The Eagles have signed new starting quarterback Kevin Kolb to a 1-year contract extention through the 2011 season.

Kolb was set to play out the final year on his original rookie contract, which would have paid him about $1.3 million. An Eagles source and Kolb's agent, Jeff Nalley, said the unusual brevity of the extenson was because of the expiring collective bargaining agreement, and the subsequent rule that contract extensions can only increase salary by 30 percent a year. Adam Caplan of Scout.com reported Kolb will get $12.26 million guaranteed, most of it a signing bonus, which is not affected by the rule. An Eagles source confirmed the figure.

"I think both sides thought it was important to do this," Nalley said.

"It's been a good month," Kolb said at an afternoon news conference. He was named the starter after the trade of Donovan McNabb, greeted a new daughter, and got a big raise, all in April.

"It means a lot," Kolb said. "You never want to let anybody down, especially when they've put that much faith in you."

Kolb could have played out his deal and forced the Eagles to franchise him next year -- but if he suffered a serious injury this season, he could have gotten nothing.

"Just security," he said when asked his reason for wanting the extension. "Getting it out of the way" so he can concentrate on leading the young team.

“We’re happy to have Kevin under contract for the next two seasons,” said head coach Andy Reid. “When given the chance, Kevin has proven to have good command of this offense and we’re looking forward to having him operate as the number one quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles.”

Added Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, “We’re excited about what we’ve seen from Kevin during his three seasons in Philadelphia both on and off the field. We’re happy to get this contract in place for the near future and are looking forward to keeping Kevin in Philadelphia for many more years to come.”

Said Eagles president Joe Banner, “I’d like to thank Kevin and his agent Jeff Nalley for their work in getting this contract signed. We’re very happy with Kevin and all the attributes he brings to this organization and we’re pleased to sign another young, ascending player to a contract. It’s something that this organization has prioritized over the last several years.”

BTW, rookie Ricky Sapp said today he will be a strongside linebacker, not a defensive end for the Eagles, as indicated by the team last weekend. Interesting switch.

We are NOT rebuilding - rebuilding implies that we wee at the bottom and needed to be "rebuilt". We have been rebuilding slowly through the past 4 seasons. This was a very good strategy because we co-won the East last year and while I agree with Bill1996 about the BRUTAL schedule and O-line questions, this will be a "maturing" year. Expect some bumps, and some total excitement. If we are lucky we can get to 10-6. After our bye week will be incredibly challenging.

Kolb is the real deal and the Eagles know that which is why they want a longer deal but Kolb is going to hold off to get top 2 money which he will earn by his leadership and play this year. He is strong mentally and will not be a crutch like McNabb was during his terrible years here. Kolb will let that ball fly and even if he throws 3 interceptions for TD's in a game he will come right back and fling that ball into triple coverage for a TD to our WR's. The WR's can expect the ball in their hands when coming out of their breaks . This offense has always stalled with McNabb and now without the constraints of an average QB this team will take off. The defense will go back to playing lights out when they look at the heart and mental fortitude displayed by Kevin Kolb. Listen Joe Banner lock Kolb up for life we cannot afford for him to walk with his leadership skill and clutch playmaking unlike McNabb, Roy " FrontRunner" Halladay, Cole "Mr Softie" Hamels and Brian "Day late Dollar short" Boucher.

I'm waiting to see how he does before I make a judgment. He better be better than #5, or else Banner and Reid will look pathetic. Plus, #5 will have the last laugh.

11 to 12 wins? Delusions of grandeur my friend. Welcome to rebuilding.

Bazalite, McNabb has the 2nd best INT percentage in NFL history, so it's kind of ridiculous to use that as a basis for comparison. Admit it: you just wanted to say "Favresque".

Why is everyone acting like our defense was horrible? We aren't St Louis. Up until the Dallas game we were 7th in the league. ChrisM...Just so you know football players are from many different places. McNabb was a Bears fan growing up, Trent Cole was probably a Bengals fan growing up. There are several guys on the team that are from Texas. Its a part of life..get over it

Hooray for Kevin Kolb, I hope he has a chip on his shoulder. After sitting on the bench for 4-years, I think he deserves a raise. I hear the news media talking about McNabb will show the Eagles that they made a mistake, but what if Kolb showed the NFL that he should have been the starter last year and can play QB with anybody.

Really bill1966? The QB is only as good as the players around him? Odd you didn't feel that way about the previous QB who had to play behind the same O line. Now it's a problem huh? Nothing like a good double standard to take away your credibility, if you had any.

Hey Reality, it is hard to tell sometimes who is kidding on here. There have been so many posts about the Eagles trying to steal the Phillies thunder that it seemed like it was a real sentiment. Plus you were the second person to write it.

Am I the only one wondering why the Eagles are moving Sapp to SAM? Why does this team consistently take players who played one position in college and then try to move them to another position at the highest level of football? I just don't get it.
