Agent: Rule Limited Kolb Deal to 1 Year

POSTED: Thursday, April 29, 2010, 3:49 PM

The Eagles have signed new starting quarterback Kevin Kolb to a 1-year contract extention through the 2011 season.

Kolb was set to play out the final year on his original rookie contract, which would have paid him about $1.3 million. An Eagles source and Kolb's agent, Jeff Nalley, said the unusual brevity of the extenson was because of the expiring collective bargaining agreement, and the subsequent rule that contract extensions can only increase salary by 30 percent a year. Adam Caplan of Scout.com reported Kolb will get $12.26 million guaranteed, most of it a signing bonus, which is not affected by the rule. An Eagles source confirmed the figure.

"I think both sides thought it was important to do this," Nalley said.

"It's been a good month," Kolb said at an afternoon news conference. He was named the starter after the trade of Donovan McNabb, greeted a new daughter, and got a big raise, all in April.

"It means a lot," Kolb said. "You never want to let anybody down, especially when they've put that much faith in you."

Kolb could have played out his deal and forced the Eagles to franchise him next year -- but if he suffered a serious injury this season, he could have gotten nothing.

"Just security," he said when asked his reason for wanting the extension. "Getting it out of the way" so he can concentrate on leading the young team.

“We’re happy to have Kevin under contract for the next two seasons,” said head coach Andy Reid. “When given the chance, Kevin has proven to have good command of this offense and we’re looking forward to having him operate as the number one quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles.”

Added Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, “We’re excited about what we’ve seen from Kevin during his three seasons in Philadelphia both on and off the field. We’re happy to get this contract in place for the near future and are looking forward to keeping Kevin in Philadelphia for many more years to come.”

Said Eagles president Joe Banner, “I’d like to thank Kevin and his agent Jeff Nalley for their work in getting this contract signed. We’re very happy with Kevin and all the attributes he brings to this organization and we’re pleased to sign another young, ascending player to a contract. It’s something that this organization has prioritized over the last several years.”

BTW, rookie Ricky Sapp said today he will be a strongside linebacker, not a defensive end for the Eagles, as indicated by the team last weekend. Interesting switch.

Generally, with young promising talent, the Eagles like to lock them up long term.

Kolb will do very good in his first season. Kolb is a better passer and more Accurate than Donovan McNabb. Think he will lead the Eagles to 11 or 12 wins this year.

The EAGLES timed this to take away from the Ryan Howard talk, which was timed to take away from the NFL draft talk. Will these 2 teams stop fighting with each other :) :) :)

Bill1966 I agree with your comments especially regarding the oline. I was very disappointed that the Eagles did not address that in the draft.

It is true that Kolb is a more accurate passer than McNabb... by 1%. It is also true that Kolb is color blind, and throws almost 2-1/2 times the amount of interceptions per attempt than McNabb (!!!) That rate is Favresque, but without Reggie White on the other side to get him a ring.

This is nothing more than the Eagles trying to steal the spotlight from the Phillies signing The Big Piece to an extension. ;) Now it's the Phils turn to answer with an announcement of another big extension of their own...and the fans get to kick back and enjoy...

even with Drew Brees this team is not winning 12 games next year. Holes all over the D and horrible playcalling will not win 12 games. not even close.

Kolb needs to be honest and admit he was a Cowboys fan growing up. He tried to back out of it on the NFL Network. lol.... The guy that is going to lead the Eagles to greatness is a cowboy fan... Am I the only one who finds that funny?

A one year deal is all Kolb could sign...it would be unfair for him and the birds to do anything longer. Heck, there may not be any football next year...

This had nothing to do with Ryan Howard. Conspiracy theorists. This isn't even news except for the fact that it is 1 year. which makes sense given that the CBA is expiring, and that he is unproven.

bazalite<-- you based your statement off an entire career of McNabbs to 3 or 4 appearances by Kolb PERIOD. If you want to talk accuracy look at Kolbs last year at Houston. 30 TDs to only 4 picks. Thats pretty accurate. The Eagles know Kolb has the ability but before they lock him up longterm they want to see him in a full season. I guarantee you if he has a good year this year he will get a nice extension after that. They did this similar to Westbrook before he got his fat contract. They waited a full season then signed him longterm.
