Kolb for Rodgers-Cromartie Would Make Sense
Les Bowen, Daily News Staff Writer
EARLIER: Around the time of the draft, an interesting rumor circulated -- that the Eagles had reached agreement with the Arizona Cardinals on a trade for quarterback Kevin Kolb, a deal that would net the Eagles starting corner Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie. Of course, teams weren't allowed to make trades then, even in the brief period when an injunction lifted the NFL lockout. The Eagles denied having any sort of deal in place.
Of course, teams also deny having deals in place with free agents before the free agent signing period starts every year, and yet, uncannily, complex, big-bucks contracts get signed in the opening minutes. Soooo...
The Rodgers-Cromartie rumor, which originally didn't find much traction out in Arizona, is all the rage in the desert right now. An Arizona reporter contacted me about it Monday, noting that he couldn't get anybody from the Cardinals to outright deny it. Then another Arizona reporter -- Mike Jurecki, who also is a XTRA910 radio talk show host - stated flatly on the air: "Kevin Kolb is the guy. Cardinals are prepared to offer DRC straight up...according to source."
Obviously, the Eagles still aren't going to say anything about this. And I'm not sure why the Cards would, but I do know the lockout is close to ending. And the Eagles are going to trade Kolb. And Arizona is the most likely destination. And a starting-quality corner who has been chosen for the Pro Bowl (year before last) is something the Eagles could use.
Rodgers-Cromartie, drafted 16th overall in 2008, is 6-2, 185. He and Asante Samuel would form a shutdown corner tandem. The absolutely ideal fit opposite Samuel would be a strong tackler, which Rodgers-Cromartie really isn't, but hey, you can't have everything. His numbers were down last season, the Cards drafted Patrick Peterson. Rodgers-Cromartie is light years ahead of what the Eagles put out there opposite Samuel last year, and probably better than anything available in free agency, other than Nnamdi Asomugha.
And of course, the Cards wouldn't be getting a slam-dunk sure thing either. I think Kolb can be a solid NFL quarterback. If he were going to be a superstar, the team would be crazy to deal him.
Is this really the Kolb deal? Interesting that the rumor won't die. It sure makes sense to me.
DRC doesn't really fit what the birds do/will do so i am not sure this is going to happen. I am still sticking with my pre draft thought that the Eagles and Cards had a deal where the Cards drafted the player the Eagles wanted in order to trade said player for Kolb later. I say its Kolb and a third for Patrick Peterson. You heard it here first ! ------Think before you speak, that is the dumbest idea i have heard yet, so your telling me that the Cardinals are gonna draft peterson, sign him to his rookie contract with this signing bonus, and then go and trade him to us and eat his 30mil signing bonus????
ztc31
Nope! Cards would be CRAZY! The Wanker
The Eagles should take anything they can get for Kevin Kolb, before the rest of the league gets on to them; anything more than a cheese steak would be highway robbery! taycom
Cromartie for the unproven 3rd year Kolb is a coup! Dexter
I would not give up a 11th round pick for klob(7 rds I know)because he is horrible, he can't run can't take a hit has a weak arm and is afraid. if sparrows can get anything for this hog-murderer they should consider it a good deal cardinals should go after mcnabb. only 9
I agree with Joyner...DRC is tissue soft. No thanks. Its not like we have Charles Woodson and his physical style on the other side. DRC is a softie. CTigglesfan
Dam look at all the haters on here go b a skins fan for a season we have a championship calliber team we lost to the champs. if akers head was in the game that woulda been us holding the Lambardi mamba710
This is a good move for both teams. Kolb is a decent QB. If he weren't why would so many teams be interested in him? Are all the people that post on here are smarter than the NFL front office people. cupajoe
I have not seen much of Cromartie, but I've seen way more than enough of Samuels and I can't go through a season watching BOTH corners 'OLE' running backs and tight ends. That's not Eagle football. I hope they shop Kolb elsewhere and use free agency to get another corner. djlen
I have long dreamed for a competent 6-2 corner......DRC works for me and he's young. Can't tackle??? Thats why I have safeties...why do I want picks for next years draft....I have waited 45 years already.....I WANT A RING!!! Kolb has value for a strong corner Im taking it.... ianstuckinfla

Kolb is getting dealt for picks. The Eagles will sign a Jonathan Joseph or Ike Taylor without having to give up Kolb. Then we'll sign Chargles Johnson at DE and Plax at a discount. We'll have to retain Bradley at SAM and possibly get another LB. Then we'll allocate some money to D-Jax and Vick to get them signed long-term, and McCoy's deal is up after next year. We'll have to solve the right tackle situation at some point too. All in all, this team is in good shape with a solid financial situation, youth, talent, and direction. dsh129
why trade a potential first round pick for DRC when you can go out and get a similar FA without having to give up a pick? DRC is also going to need a contract extension soon so it shouldnt be a financial issue either unless DRC is a cant miss player...which he isnt, this would be a dumb move sdffa13- To the people that talk about what happens if Vick gets hurt: Name the team in the NFL that has a top 7 QB that would be okay if their starting QB got hurt for a long period of time? Ummm yeah, NONE.
No, that is a bad deal for the Eagles. billtfla
In a heartbeat....it solves two problems....then get Hainesworth from the Redskins and they have to eat some of the contract...(finally a stud push up the middle) ....Problem two solved.....Buy a good right tackle to protect Michael....(almost anybody is better than what we have) .....get a linebacker ( again, almost anybody is better than what we have)...and we could be good..... nuggett
Sure, Kafka has had tons of NFL experience to make it clear that he's better than Kolb. I'm comforted to know that Flyers70 is just a fan and not in the FO. Silly comment.
Back to the subject at hand, I agree with those posters who claim that Kolb is being overrated. I happen to think that even though the sample size is small, we have seen the good, the bad and the ugly sides of KK. He could just as easily be a mirage or the real deal, but the time to strike a deal is now just in case he is a middling QB. Make the trade and feel like you've stolen the Brinks-mobile if you get a high pick, as well, Howie. mainerob
Rodgers Cromartie is a very good player and former 1st round pick. I would think the Eagles would get a 2nd or 3rd rounder plus Rodgers Cromartie in a deal. This would be an excellent deal for us. Kolb is being overrated by alot of people. He can make the throws when protection is perfect but when he's forced to improvise, he's not much of a playmaker. Bottom line is Kolb must be traded so he doesn't walk away at seasons end for no return for us. Arizona seems like its our only option. Take this deal and run. bradco
I bet anyone Kafka is better than Kolb. Preseason last year he did much better than Kolb. Would give Kafka a chance b4 Kolb any day. At least Kafka see's the field if the play breaks down. Kolb on the other hand passes into coverage. Does it consistently. If everyone in Philly wants to keep him. Look for another painful season if Vick gets hurt Flyers_70
Samuel version 2010 can tackle, he worked hard and got better, give him some credit. willbert31
This trade straight up does not make sense! Both players have huge upsides but are have not proven they will be great for the long term. Its fair to say they are each in the same exact stage of their career and are as good right now as one another at their respective positions. So being equal, Kolb gets the nod as much more valuable due to the position he plays. It has to be DRC and a pick to make sense Eagle GREEN Mt State
If you make this trade, you must demand Kolb for DRC and a fresh kidney (because DRC only has one kidney left). Plus DRC is not such a proven player playing against real weak competition in NFC West since 2008. Also his knock out of Tenn State was that he was little soft and untested with (again) weak competition in college. The poor tackling and soft coverage was all overlooked because of the 4.29 in the 40 and his 6 feet 1 inch frame. You can do better than this!!! Fo Fo Fo
DRC straight up for KK. That leaves you plenty of money and time to sign a DL, LB and RB. We don't have to hit a home run, we just have to string together a few singles. The lost twice last year to the SB champs by a combined total of 12 points. Look into McNabb as the backup. If training camp is delayed even as much as one week, coaching and familiarity will be at a premium this year. Vick and McNabb will have no learning curve with the offense. snj7195
What's going to happen when we all discover that the Michael Vick who reverted back to his old ways down the stretch last year is the real Michael Vick. His first instinct is to run, he doesn't find his receiver quickly enough, and he makes bad decisions. I'd rather have Kolb. (Also, Kolb hasn't killed any dogs that we know about.) Bartleby
tHE PIGEONS NEED SERIOUS BEEF ON THE DEFENSIVE LINE...SERIOUS BEEF ON THE OFFENSIVE LINE...HEAVY DUTY HELMET SLAPPIN TRASH TALKIN DON'T FEED UM TILL SUNDAY AFTERNOON GUYS ! A MLB THAT STRIKES FEAR IN THE OPPOSITION...GIMME THESE GUYS & THEN GO AFTER YOUR SOFT CORNERS ! frank castle
Id rather have a proven defensive player over a draft pick for next year that the Eagles will more than likely blow anyway. PhillySportsAddict1969
I think this will get done, along with a decent DE pickup...I'm interested what we do at MLB, big problem last year and Stewart Bradley is not the answer kcoyle11
Great deal for managment....back orders for his shirt are already pouring in....Kolb's shirt peaked in sales last year.....Laurie and Banner laugh all the way to the bank giving this town a loser on the field and a winner in their bank account, with the promise of, "wait 'till next year" and waiting, for 51 years and counting......... STEPHEN1988
Rodgers-Cromartie for a back-up chump? Need to do it less than a minute after the CBA is signed or Arizona will have its fans turning in their season tickets. Astro Jones
Kolb has his bags packed and is ready to go shawnmac

Comment removed.- Rodgers-Cromartie is overrated when you conser that Asomugha is there for the taking via FA; my feeling is that there are more viable teams out there willing to give more than just a one for one trade that is suggested in this article. And think about it, it's very rare for trades such as Kolb for DRC to ever happen, and we're not confusing DRC with Champ Bailey, are we? (Cause I'm not!)
Vick goes down...say "bye bye"! Robi_LA
So what happens if Vick gets hurt? He missed 3 games with injuries last year. Mike Kafka is too inexperienced. Any chance the Eagles spend a 3rd round pick to get Terrelle Pryor in the Supplemental draft? He could be worth it in a few years. zeke128
Give me Patrick Peterson not Cromartie. BLUEBELLION
on what planet is a corner for a starting qb a good deal? and btw, calling rogers cromartie a shut down isn't just a stretch, it's a flat out joke. snakeplissken
If you complained that Asante doesn't tackle...wait til you see this guy. He won't cover the slant! At least Asante puts in an effort to hit. Joyner80
Actually, there is not one position with 'championship potentional" on this team. scootch- In a heart beat this deal is done. Then sign Johnson from the Panthers if possible along with keeping Bradley at sam. This De would be solid with championship potential. FMBNG
Agree with The Reddgie! Kolb 4 DRC just ain't enough! Throw in a 2, now we're talkin!.. and I think the BIRDS would bite! dudega
You heard it here first ! andyreidisfat
I agree with the Reddgie. I live in AZ and have seen a lot of DRC, he is pretty soft. I have also seen him just flat out give up on plays. Still he is an upgrade for the bird's backfield. PhinallyPhilly
Comment removed.- show me how Kolb is a "Very Good" quarterback. He's had maybe 2 good games in his career. He's thrown a boat load of INT's. and that Dallas game last season, amid it was backups, was awful (3 int's, 1 fumble). Harrison ran for 99 yards that game and they still couldn't beat the boy's, lost by one. azguz
- Kolbs early career stats are up there with some of the best QBs to play the game. At one point last season, Kolb had more 300 yard passing games in less than a year's worth of starts than Vick had during his entire career. drog
Thought the Eagles were going to play more zone defense this year?? DRC and Samuel the two softest CB tacklers in the league... pflynn20
They may use Henery as a punter this year and have him adjust to the NFL especially with the SUPER BOWL aspirations the Eagles have this year and playing the year with an unproven kicker. EricSpin301
Meh. hipdaddy
Do it. Then sign a DE, DT, OT, MLB, OLB, RB, QB, S, P. mikeyhigs
KK for DRC straight up? No thanks. Throw in a 2nd or 3rd rounder as well as DRC, and it is worth thinking about. The Reddgie- for KK i'd take anything north of a 2nd rounder. If they offered Cromartie straight up for him, i'd take it. Kolb is a back up QB. He will never be a great QB. serviceable but never great. azguz
