Kampman First Up for Birds? AJ for Rams
Les Bowen, Daily News Staff Writer
Well, we're confused. First, FOX's Jay Glazer tweeted that free agent DE Aaron Kampman is scheduled to visit the Eagles. Kampman's name certainly has been linked to the Birds in repeated FA speculation; though less splashy than Julius Peppers, he is an intense, high motor player who would improve the DE spot opposite Trent Cole.
Then, though, Glazer corrected his tweet, saying the Eagles have spoken to agent Neil Cornich, but that no visit has been scheduled. Efforts to contact Cornich for comment have been unsuccessful. The Eagles have not responded to requests for comment. They usually -- but not always -- announce free agent visits.
Then again, Tom Silverstein, who covers the Packers for the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, reports via Twitter that a "very reliable source" has told him that Kampman is coming to visit the Eagles. He did caution that Kampman's agent may be spreading the word of a visit before it happens.
Meanwhile, Andrew Brandt has a column about Kampman on National Football Post. Brandt was a vice president of finance for the Packers, served as a consultant for the Eagles last year and teaches at Wharton.
He gives Kampman high marks in general and says that his reports indicate Kampman is doing well in rehab.
Two excerpts:
I am biased here, but virtually any amount paid to Aaron will be worth it. As a strong believer that character counts, Aaron has great value beyond the field. He will instantly upgrade the character of the defensive line unit — a group that can be a bit squirrelly — and become a team leader in the process.
Kampman never took to the new 3-4 defense of Packers coordinator Dom Capers, and his relationship with a team and a defense where he had been a leader on and off the field took a downward turn. Previously an eternally positive force in the locker room, Kampman’s position switch robbed him of enthusiasm as he took an indifferent approach to the position change that did not sit well with the Packer coaches. Simply, after eight years with the Packers, it’s time for Kampman to make a change.
Also, we can (sigh) forget about running back Chester Taylor, who apparently is signing with the Bears.
This could have some impact on those Michael Vick-to-St. Louis rumors: The Rams reportedly have signed A.J. Feeley, another quarterback with Eagles ties, and much history with St. Louis offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur.
Earlier we wrote about the Eagles making Leonard Weaver the league's highest-paid fullback with a three-year deal.
- Mariord - Because the Eagles are CHEAP! That is why they didn't go after Peppers. I don't care what anyone says, Peppers is WAY better then Kampman. If Kampman didn't have knee problems I would be all for it, but as Phillies1120 wisely pointed out, Stacy Andrews proves how unwise it is to give money to a guy coming of a knee injury. Eagles don't care about winning the bowl. They are all about the money people! There is NO salary cap this year, you would think they would take advantage of that and try and get some playmakers. CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP! They won't win a bowl with this kind of management. ChrisM
Mariord, if you look at taylors contract, he is getting 7+ mill in his first year. I too would have liked him here, but it's all about the dollar bill, and the bears stepped up first. sister mary francis
The Birds didn't want Taylor because they don't run the ball for one, plus the draft is deep in RB's. We all know they don't pay (or overpay) for anything! Can you say cheap? hawaii2000
Comment removed.- I am not that impressed with this class so maybe its not a bad idea to stand pat... Peppers has Kearse written all over him.. Kampman might work but it has to be at a reasonable price... the only guys I would truly love to have are Dansby and Rolle.. and if I have to pick 1.. .Rolle.. albertpa
I think they r going to go after sproles and kampman, maybe antrel rolle if he leaves NY without a contract. Its still alot of good free agents out there guys..be patient. bigjay215

Always the FA with the 'ACL'... year in and year out it seems PhillyPhilly
Don't care who. Don't care when. Don't care how. But the need at Left DE MUST be taken care of. If our Iggles are serious about this coming season being a Super year, the "D" MUST be upgraded to at least above NFL average. And if the O-Line can be effective this year, it must have a major upgrade at Center (Jackson will miss the year rehabbing that awful knee injury) RT and RT. if those things occur....it WILL be a Super year. TBear
Brackett is now off the market. Guess the Eagles are happy with a broken middle linebacker and corp of backups. barefoot

Taylor & Peppers are both bears, Vanden Bosh is (of all teams) a Lion. Sprouls will most likely (if he already hasn't) re-sign with the Bolts. I don't really know who else is out there on defense. flcelebrity

ChrisM- He did switch from DE to a LB sport as Green Bay moved to a 3-4 D. Yes, his knee was operated on but I've read it was as minor as it gets for an ACL injury and nowadays, they can fix knees like never ebfore. davekrieg
I'm a big fan of Aaron Kampman. Test the dude for Roids and if he passes sign him up. No Pepperoid's please. You see what happened to Merriroid?? He stunk after they caught him. But why do we still have Donovan??? Let's move on OK. You know he absolutely, barring a SB win, won't be here next year so what's the point??? Phillyexp
