Eagles lose coach to Bengals

POSTED: Monday, February 21, 2011, 1:02 PM

James Urban's tenure as Eagles' assistant offensive coordinator was brief.

Urban was named the wide receivers coach of the Bengals today.

He had been the Eagles' quarterbacks coach but was named assistant offensive coordinator less than 2 weeks ago. At the time, Urban's move seemed a bit odd, since the Eagles don't normally have assistant coordinators, but a team source said then that it was a promotion and will allow Urban to work with all position groups, not only the QBs.

Urban, 37, replaces Mike Sheppard, who was hired as the quarterbacks coach in Jacksonville.

Urban spent two years as the Eagles' quarterbacks coach. He has been with the Eagles since 2004 as head coach Andy Reid's assistant and later as an offensive quality control coach.

Eagles right tackle Winston Justice will have knee surgery tomorrow in Birmingham, Ala.

Noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews will perform a cleanout procedure, the Eagles said.

A team source said any suggestion that the injury is career-ending or that Justice would need a microfracture procedure is speculation at this point.

Justice flew to Birmingham this morning from his Florida home.

Justice has been hampered by a knee injury late in the season.

It is a shame that Winston Justice has a knee injury. Hopefully, he will have the procedure and be able to play at some point. With the CBA situation, his rehab could be an issue for him. I hope that Dr. Andrews does the operation, his reputation has him at the top of the profession.

That said, Justice is an average player, playing arguably the most important position on the offensive line. He's protecting Michael Vick's blind side as a left handed QB. The Eagles really needed to upgrade that position anyway; King Dunlop is less of a player than Justice so it looks like once again, the Eagles first round pick will be an offensive tackle. More likely, they will drop out of the first round to get more picks.

Its just another example of how "average" the Eagles are at drafting players. No depth on the offensive line, particularly at the tackle position. Vick will be running for his life again this season.

It amazes me that we didn't spend one draft pick on an O-Lineman last year.

Rather than draft a stud OT or OG, knowing that Super Bowls are won in the trenches.. Maybe they can find a sleeper OT to play for Justice, maybe a player in UFL or the Canadian League... Or maybe some scrub that was hurt all 2010 for the Beganls. Stop nickle and diming a community that now knows your are not a "Small Market" franchise!! Lets get some players!!

Where are we going to get said player? Free agency, that may never happen? Trade for some players that isn't allowed? Not much choice of anything right now. Draft, thats it right now

We've lost Andy's former"Assistant quality control coach"? If QC means clock mgt. timeouts, making sure 11 men are on the field (not 10 or 12)and a 75% scoring record in the red zone, this guy probably had a No Show job. Just another rat leaving a sinking ship.

Justice and the team couldn't figure out he needed this surgery a month ago?

That would be hilarious if you were really Joe Banner. Since you are not, just your name is funny, but the post is horrible. To be really funny, you should act like Joe Banner and agree with the fans who your rob of hard earned money. Now that's comedy! You may actually get ole Joe fired for it. Win-Win.

Surely there will be a sleeper in the 7th round this year that can protect Vick's blind side. Reid can develop this mystery man into another King Dunlop.

Ben Ijalana from Villanova would be perfect. Dude is going to be a stud in the pros. Mauls people in run blocking and is extremely quick with long arms for pass blocking. Of course, Andy probably won't draft the kid that you know he's seen a ton since he's in his own back yard.

When so many coaches on a football team leave voluntarily that is a story that the Philly press is missing. There is something wrong with the way the Eagles front office is running the show that all these coaches have made lateral moves to other teams. The assistant DC goes to Cleveland instead of staying here to be the DC. This guy leaves for Cincinnati, the most dysfunctional team in the NFL outside of Al Davis. What gives Philly press guys? Why is everyone afraid to ask these guys why they left?

They did ask him why he left or was he actually fired. He said he has been here 7 years and just wanted more of an opportunity and didnt feel he would get that opportunity with the Eagles.
