Jaworski on McNabb's contract, Eagles' chances

POSTED: Tuesday, June 30, 2009, 8:05 AM

Unlike the big to-do made of Donovan McNabb’s contract restructuring last week, Monday Night Football analyst Ron Jaworski doesn’t think it’s such a big deal.

“I think it’s irrelevant, to tell you the truth,” Jaworski said while sitting in his office at NFL Films last week in Mount Laurel.

Jaworski was participating as an instructor in last week’s 3rd annual NFL Broadcast Boot Camp for present and former players looking to break into television and radio.

“Donovan had two years left on his contract. I felt all along that he would fulfill the two years. The Eagles probably did the right thing, they had money under the cap and they gave it to a guy who is a big key to season.

“If you’re going to be a championship team, your team has to play well. There have been times, occasionally, that an average quarterback wins a Super Bowl. But it’s all about what’s your best chance to win a Super Bowl … Their best chance is with Donovan McNabb,” Jaworski said.

As a former Eagles Pro Bowl quarterback, Jaworski can understand why it was important for McNabb’s mental state to re-work his contract.

“I would think that they believe in me,” Jaworski said. “They believe I’m the guy. They laid 5 million on my lap. They could have easily said to play the next two years how the contract is.”

With a healthy – and happy – quarterback, Jaworski thinks that the Eagles offense will operate a little more smoothly this year. Aside from McNabb, the upgrades on the offensive line and at receiver can’t hurt. But a lot depends on how the team’s collective personality jells.

Jaworski knows that each new player brings a new dimension to the locker room.

“Although I think there have been upgrades in the talent and youth, chemistry is always the unknown,” he noted. “You look at the offensive line and they are huge – but can those 5 work as one?”

In the end, Jaworski thinks that the Eagles will be standing at the top of the NFC East standings at the end of the upcoming season – despite changes abound to opponents’ rosters.

“Although I think the Eagles are a better football team … [the division is] my biggest concern. The Giants are a heck of a football team. You’re going to have to contend with Albert Haynesworth in Washington. Dallas is still a very talented football team. I think the NFC East is a hell of a division.

“I still like the Eagles.”

From the ex-Eagles file, Sean Considine has been penciled in as the starting strong safety for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“I wanted the opportunity to start when I first went in and talked to them," Considine told the Rockford Register Star in his hometown in Illinois. "They told me I would be given that chance, and the rest is up to me. Their defense is quite a bit different from what I’m used to, though. There are a lot of adjustments I still need to make.”

Jaworski likes the Eagles this year. Now that's news. That's the same as a headline titled "Eagles Fans Expecting Birds To Win It All This Year". Pick any year for either.

Some of posters here are bitter fools who need a dose of reality. Look at the NFC East rosters and tell me the Eagles don't have a good shot at winning the division. Of course the games have to be played, but they look like a SB contender. I like the comment about Marino. Marino would have been run out of Philly.

In other "news", Merril Hodge likes the Steelers to repeat. LJL McNabb might end up on that list - but nowhere near the top of it.

The Giants are still coached by Tom Coughlin who will find a way to neutralize Brandon Jacobs... big free agents go to Washington to get fat on Synder money and Dallas is still lead by Tony Romo.. GO BIRDS!!!!!!!!

the negative n idiotic posts r one reason d most passionate fans in d nfl continue to b scorned.mcnabb is a quarterback we dreamed of all dem years with cast offs n scrubbs leading us to losing seasons.u cant win the superbowl if ur not a winning qb guiding a winning team through the playoffs but it takes more than the qb, go ask elway who is revered but took 14 years to win one and that was only with terell davis carrying the load. yes he lost 3 superbowls by blowouts before td came along. mcnabb lost one by 3 to the team of the decade.betcha elway wouldnt hv lasted 14 years before winning one .mcnabb u got 4 more years : ). enjoy 5 while he's here no qb is perfect they all need weapons a solid team n some good luck to win it all.hey to all who think ur a loser if u dont win a chasmpionship, how many hv u won ? interleague play, high school, pop warner give me a break ur d real loser waiting on someone else to make u feel good about urself.im enjoying d any reid era yeah we need a ring but it sure beats the 90's post reggie n randall etc.

the cowboys arent that GREAT of a team overall. i see them going 10-6, hey roy williams! skins will go 8-8 roughly again. the giants are the biggest concern but if we went as far as we did and got a lot better, why shouldnt we win? mcnabb will be up and down as usual with that stupid smile, but i see 11-5 and a division title perhaps b/c of tiebreaker

Face it , the Eagles are significantly better on paper than last year if not the past 5 years..It's all a matter of chemistry.

Open letter to all eagles complainers... I am a birds fan. Training camp is coming. With the exception of last October it is the absolute best time of year. The team looks seriously improved and I can't wait. So if you whine about the coach, or puke, or the lack of rings, or stuff that happened 5 years ago...you're not a fan. So pipe down and get juiced...training camp is coming....
