Is it time again for Eagles-Cowboys on Thanksgiving?

At one point, the NFL used to announce the opening weekend and marquee games at the owners' meetings in March, which begin today in Florida.

A league spokesman has said that some logistics still need to be resolved, so it is unlikely those games will be announced this week. The Super Bowl champion Giants will open the season on Wednesday, Sept. 5, with Green Bay a likely opponent. The NFL has moved the opener from Thursday to Wednesday to avoid a conflict with President Obama's keynote address at the Democratic National Convention.

A prime-time game is scheduled for that Sunday and ESPN will have the Monday night doubleheader. With Peyton Manning in Denver and the Tebow show with the Jets (even if he is the backup quarterback), it would not be a surprise to see one or both of those teams involved as well.

But further down the line, we got thinking about Thanksgiving. We know Detroit and Dallas will host the afternoon games as usual, and the night game moves around. NBC will air the evening affair instead of the NFL Network.

Detroit is playing an AFC opponent so Dallas will play an NFC opponent. That means either the Eagles, Redskins, Giants, Buccaneers, Saints or Bears. Dallas' two other home opponents are AFC teams.

The Eagles and Cowboys have not played on Thanksgiving since Nov. 23, 1989. That was a 27-0 Eagles shutout win. The Birds' vaunted defense Buddy Ryan held rookie Troy Aikman to 54 yards passing and picked him off three times. The loss dropped the Cowboys to 1-11 on their way to a 1-15 season. The Eagles would finish 11-5 and lose in the wild card round to the LA Rams.

The Birds last played on Turkey Day in 2008 with a home win over Arizona. That game came four days after Donovan McNabb was benched in favor of Kevin Kolb against Baltimore. McNabb started for the 5-5-1 Eagles and they would win four of their final five games to just make the playoffs. The Eagles would beat Minnesota and the Giants on the road before losing at Arizona in the NFC title game.

This is idle speculation, but what would you think about Eagles-Cowboys on Thanksgiving?

I actually like it when the Birds play on Monday (or even Sunday) Night on Thanksgiving Weekend so I can safely watch the game with no travel/family conflicts.

What I think about that is wondering how much you actually got paid to pen this nonsense?

Ya know thingfish, these guys are paid to produce articles on a regular basis, and there's not a lot of Eagles news out there right now. I'd like to see what Pulitzer-worthy material you'd come up with under these circumstances.

what I wonder is why some people read this, if all they do is comment about why people read it?

I doubt it will be the Saints. Saints-Cowboys played in 2010. They love playing the Packers @Lions, so I would think there is a great chance at one of the NFC East teams. RGIII might be the ticket though. I would love a Thursday night home game at the end of November... almost a bye week afterwards with 3 extra days of rest.

There's no way that Andy Reid allows the NFL schedulers to cause him to miss Thanksgiving dinner.

It's amazing people feel compelled to comment about the writer and/or the article, but yet offer nothing to the topic that is either insightful, thought provoking or interesting. In any case, I agree with eaglesfan that holidays cause potentially too much conflict. True eagles fans want to truly watch the game without interuptions. Les/Paul(guitar?), please ignore the morons and keep doing what you do.....report information and opinion. Most of us don't expect a literary masterpiece on a blog! I am sure the thingfish commenters on here wouldn't know a literary masterpiece if it hit them between the eyes!
