Irvin: Expect QB controversy with Birds

POSTED: Monday, August 31, 2009, 8:24 AM

Former Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin will be announced today as one of the lead Sunday analysts for the NFL Network, but he is starting early with sharing his opinions, especially as it relates to Michael Vick.

Irvin tells USA Today that he sees a quarterback controversy potentially brewing with the Eagles. He said it could happen much sooner than expected, projecting that Vick's suspension will not last until its maximum in Week 6.

"I'm not sure you're going to have to wait that long," Irvin said.

Irvin wonders whether McNabb actually lobbied the Eagles to bring in Vick. "I had to question that," Irvin said. "Did McNabb go to (the team) about Vick, or did they come to him."

He also said Vick should not have said after Thursday's game that returning to his role as a quarterback was like riding a bike, suggesting it was easy. "Does (NFL Commissioner) Roger Goodell want you to be the star of the league early? I don't think so. … Somebody should have gotten to Vick and said, 'Let's be humble.' "

Donovan McNabb returned to his blog at yardbarker.com last night with a post called "Are You Ready for Some Football?" McNabb writes about what an exciting time of year this is for players at all levels. He also throws his support behind the new coach at his alma mater, Syracuse.

The post has a photo of McNabb and Gratz lineman Tamaric Richardson taken after the preseason game against Jacksonville. Richardson is the first winner of the Donovan McNabb/Daily News High School Football Player Award. Writes McNabb, " Brian Dawkins initiated the program last year and I thought it was too good to end. Philadelphia area coaches nominate their best players in terms of their work in the classroom and on the field and their character as well. It was nice to met Tamaric and his mom following the game."

The Daily News is accepting nominations from high school coaches. Please send information about players, including a brief bio, to assistant sports editor Chuck Bausman, at bausmac@phillynews.com.

NFL.com's Jason LaConfora blogged that the Patriots have shown interest in A.J. Feeley, assumed to be the pending odd man out in the Eagles' quarterback cluster. He writes that many teams are interested in Feeley, including the St. Louis Rams. The Pats reportedly are releasing backup QB Kevin O'Connell. Hard to see the Birds doing anything, though, until they know the Michael Vick regular-season suspension scenario, which could be from zero to five games. The Eagles aren't going to play with two eligible quarterbacks, at least, not for long.

Jeremy Maclin left practice Sunday after falling hard and a little awkwardly, diving for a low Michael Vick throw. The Eagles did not update his status last night. Maclin didn't seem to be seriously hurt.

A lot of the focus with summer has been on the Eagles' injuries, but their Week 1 opponent, the Carolina Panthers, are struggling, too, especially on defense.

Run-stuffing defensive tackle Maake Kemoeatu ruptured his Achilles' tendon not 30 minutes into the first practice. Jon Beason, Carolina's middle linebacker and team leader, sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee in the second preseason game against Miami and is questionable for the opener. Outside linebacker Thomas Davis is recovering from his own sprained MCL and missed his third straight game Saturday. Free safety Charles Godfrey hopes to be ready for Week 1 despite a broken hand.

Potentially tough times ahead for new defensive coordinator Ron Meeks.

Don't see it. McNabb had a bad 4-game stretch and he has had injuries. So what?

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury: Michael who? Oh, that Michael. He who did some very bad things, cheating on all those involved in his life and now he becomes( remains?) a spokeman for the NFL. Give me a break. Now, I ask you: what sense of entitlement does MI have that enables him to comment on future events, let alone be granted more air time? Please NFL suits, take charge. We have heard enough of and about these many hard core "star athletes" who present themselves as either entertainers or knowledgeable reporters. Go away! I rest my case!

Michael Irvin giving advice about being humble? Maybe we can get a quote from Deion on the subject as well?

Irvin hates McNabb and hates the Birds. He started the TO controversy comparing Favre to McNabb. I got 2 words for Irvin - TIM HAUCK!!!!

I hate irvin but he has a point. BUT... I don't believe it will happen that way, atleast this year. Vick will have to remain humble or he will be released. He needs the Eagles more than they need him. That is the reason why I question this move. They only will see the value in this move if Don goes down.

I doubt there will be a problem but please remember that because McNabb has never developed a warm relationship with all of the fans, Eagles fans always fall in love the backup. Whether it is Kolb who I think cant play, Garcia, Feeley when he went 4-1 when McNabb went down years ago to even Bobby Hoying (remember him???). Now with a back up who was a pro bowler and is exciting to watch, there will be plenty of calls to talk radio calling for Vick when Donovan does not have a perfect game. That being said, I could see it happen.

Stop, stop, stop with all this QB controversy! Michael Vick wasn't as good a QB as McNabb 3 years ago (Except in Madden football for Xbox), and he certainly isn't going to become a better QB now. We are not going to run gimmicky plays for Michael, the offense will be explosive enough. What is Michael's role? He is a better option at QB if (or when) McNabb goes down. Who would you rather have in a 1st round playoff game: Vick, Feeley, or Kolb? Vick of course. So just stop with the QB controversy already! I'd much rather hear about other players on the team or how the rest of the NFC Beast is doing.

Michael Irvin is correct - Vick shouldn't have come across so arrogantly after his first time on the field. He displayed no humility. I hope this is the last year of the Andy Reid era. He’s never going to win the super bowl with his precious dink and dump system. Should have hired up-and-comer John Harbaugh. Hope Lurie wises up!

Irvin is proof that people get second chances in the NFL. Not that they deserve them, but they get them. The fact that an idiot like him is now still around is sickening. I hope no one sees him as a role model.
