McNabb Blather Intensely Confusing

POSTED: Wednesday, March 3, 2010, 10:52 AM

Hope nobody out there is getting too worked up over those "intense internal conversations"  the Rams supposedly are having over the possibility of trading for Donovan McNabb.Donovan negotiating for a new home

Sure, anything's possible. But let's think this through. The Rams, the worst team in the NFL last season, are undertaking a huge rebuilding project. Their draft picks are precious. To get McNabb, they'd have to give up something pretty darned significant -- at least the first overall pick in the second round, maybe more. OK, if they're going to do that, they're projecting McNabb as their quarterback for at least a few years, right? Yet, he's only signed through 2010. To make such a deal happen, you'd think the Rams would have to be assured they could sign McNabb to a new deal. Why on earth would McNabb be willing to play along?

BTW, maybe the McNabb camp had this scenario in mind last June, when contract revision talks reached that odd conclusion of more money but no added years. The assumption then was that the Eagles didn't want to extend McNabb -- but what if he saw he could retain more control of his destiny by keeping his 2011 options open?

Maybe I'm missing something here, tradewise. Just yesterday, ESPN's Adam Schefter opined that he thought McNabb was the most likely Eagles quarterback to be dealt, ahead of Michael Vick. I don't see it. The only situation that makes sense for McNabb is a contending team, that he'd like to sign with beyond this season. How many of those need quarterbacks? The Vikings seem to be willing to wait indefinitely for Brett Favre. The Cardinals have indicated they intend to go forward with Matt Leinart, and unlike with Minnesota, there is no obvious McNabb connection (where a guy lives in the offseason has nothing to do with anything). San Francisco, a borderline contending team, also has shown no inclination toward trading for a 33-year-old QB, and no McNabb connection.

If you told me the Eagles really were ready to move on from the McNabb Era, despite everything Andy Reid has said since the season, I wouldn't be shocked. I'm really not sure how the moving on gets accomplished, though, unless they decide to sell a "one-year" McNabb at a discount to a bad team ... which you'd think would not be looking for a one-year solution.

I'll believe it when it happens.

Because of the Eagles contract situation with all their quarterbacks, they themselves have caused much of the speculation that is currently running thru the NFL. They put themselves in this position,so its only natural that most NFL observers are wondering what they are going to do.

What's confusing to me, Les, is why you can't come up with some new material. Another McNabb article is like shooting fish in a barrel around here. Guaranteed to get at least 50 comments. Are you paid by the comment?

See if you can follow me here: McNabb will get traded if another team makes a GREAT offer equivalent to a mid-1st round and a mid-2nd round pick. He's not going anywhere for a 3rd or 4th rounder. (that was funny, though!) Vick WILL be traded and a team will give up the equivalent of a mid-2nd round pick. Stop trading insults and look at this objectively. Too many haters here speaking like 3rd graders. Kolb is your starter in Philly if the Eagles get a GREAT offer for McNabb.

I, for one, believed Andy the FIRST time he said Mc5 was going to be his QB next year. I have NO clue why nobody ELSE believes him. If the defense upgrades to about NFL average, or hopefully, a little above....our Iggles will go to the Conference Championship game. If the O-Line gets to be better than last year, we WILL win the Superbowl. Imagine this: Our "D" holds opponants to a 19 PPG AVERAGE. Does anybody NOT think that with an improved O-Line we won't score at least 21 PPG??

McNabb starts 2010 and retires an Eagle afterward. Print it.

I have to agree with many of the commentators here Les Bowen is clueless. These old dudes act like the NFL hasn't changed in 10 years. The fact is teams get better quickly. Only the most poorly run teams are in permanent rebuilding mode, i.e. the Raiders and the Lions. Who would have thought that the Saints would win the Super Bowl 2 years ago? Weren’t they just in "rebuilding mode"? How about Arizona? Weren't they "completely hopeless" according to the "experts" just 3 years back? I’m sure we could find a similar article from a Lessesque moron that says the Cardinals will never be able to attract free agents. I must say, unlike Baseball and Basketball, Football writers are not very knowledgeable about the game. Many like Les have lagged well behind the times, failing to adapt to the parity that is the NFL. Honestly, I do not think I'm qualified to write for a sport like Baseball, Basketball or Hockey, but I would immediately jump to the head of the class if I was a football writer.

Another thing, when has Donovan ever been worried about winning championships? As far as I can tell the guy likes getting paid and he has been perpetually happy with simply playing for a “competitive” team. Who says the Rams couldn’t be competitive next year?
