Howie: Candidates Know We'll Support Coach

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman briefly updated the Eagles' website on the team's coaching search Wednesday. Roseman said he is confident potential candidates know the Eagles offer a framework conducive to success.
The men who seemed to be the top candidates, Penn State coach Bill O'Brien and Oregon coach Chip Kelly, decided to stay in college. The Eagles are interviewing former Bears coach Lovie Smith Thursday. They have announced plans to speak with Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians, Cincinnati offensive coordinator Jay Gruden, and Seattle defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, though those interviews are not set.
"They know we have a great owner" in Jeffrey Lurie, Roseman told interviewer Dave Spadaro. "Who's going to support and give as much resources as possible to make sure we succeed. They know that we have just supported a coach for 14 years. We're built that way. This whole organization is built to support a head coach. They know that, not only in actions, but it words. All they have to do is call Andy Reid and know that that's how we do it.
"We develop family here. People who have been here have been here for a long time, they've grown together ... It's been a very positive experience. I'm not saying we're the perfect franchise, by any stretch of the imagination, but it's a great tribute to Jeffrey and what he's building here."
Roseman said lengthy, nine-hour interviews like the ones with O'Brien and Kelly touch on every detail of a potential coach's operation.
"How they run meetings, how they run training camp, what they're looking for in players, what they're looking for in coaches, getting an overall picture, because being a head coach in the National Football League, that's a big job, and you're a CEO. You have to have a plan and know what you're doing in every area," Roseman said. "You'd be surprised at how detailed these people are, when it comes to strength and conditioning, or a training staff, or video, they have the answers, and it's very interesting to hear."
The Eagles never promised a quick resolution to the search -- in fact, Lurie sketched out exactly the opposite last week when he spoke with reporters,
"Jeffrey's been very adamant with us, that the key is getting the right guy. The key isn't getting the right guy as quickly as possible," Roseman said. "So that's what we're going to do."
Why would any serious pro football employee want to be employed with a team that cares so little that they make Pee Wee Roseman their GM? As long as Pee Wee is still employed, the Eagles cannot be taken seriously by any players, coaches...or fans. kelprod2-freemarket
Does anyone think for second that Howie and Jeffrey aren't the main deterrent in this search? How many coaches are going to want to coach Howies's draft choices. When you have lawyers and accountants making football decisions, you get what you get. MartyT
Geez every good coach must be chomping at the bit to work with Pee Wee Herman. One of Pee Wee's first questions in the coaching interviews was whether it would be ok for Pee Wee to sit in the back of the room when the team watches film. BLUEBELLION
Great Beelzebub, when did Philly become the worst franchise in the league? To read these comments you'd think the Eagles were Oakland East. This roster still has talent on both sides of the ball. It just needs a strong HC to weed out the chaff and coordinators to make the gears turn in unison. JBirks- the raiders have three super bowl wins to the eagles ZERO

Yes, they are a good team to come into. Look at the options, better than Az with no QB in sight, better than Cleveland because well....its Cleveland. How many consecutive 10 loss seasons can you have. SD, prob a close tie, who knows what Rivers is at this point, rather bank on Foles future or a new QB. Bears are better, thats it. peteike
Yes - the Eagles are an attractive team. They have a high pick. McCoy ( Bryce Brown), Maclin and Jackson are nothing to sneeze at. The return of their entire O-line will make the next coach look like a savior. They just need 4 starters in the secondary ... Copper34
I am sure Jeff and Howie make a great impression in an interview. All the candidate can think is 'Do I really want to work for these guys'? That is why they should only interview coaching candidates who are currently unemployed and are desperate for any job. Even one with the Eagles. lostInPhilly
Ours is a big market team. It’s a desirable job for a guy who can stand the heat. Our brass is not the issue - the college fellas didn't want to make the leap so they stayed down. There’s a lot to love: passionate fan base, top-notch facilities, money to spend, Cliff Lee. Say what you will about Roseman’s choices the past two seasons but to say he is the main reason we don’t have a coach is ridiculous. Plus I’m happy to wait on the potential for Gruden. Speed isn't a huge factor, yet. gho_matt
If Vermeil and Jaws say hire Jon Gruden and they don't, then I am beginning to think Lurie has been listening to his Philly brethren at CBP Giles and Montgomery telling him that you can win on the cheap with a dolt like Charlie at the helm. What the hell is going on with Philly sports? Phillip Phan- umm, they did win with charlie at the helm
dope hannibal barca - What exactly does Vermeil or Jaws have to do with the Eagles other than being losers before Lurie owned the Eagles? I wouldn't listen to those clowns. Jaws CHOKED big time in the SB he LOST and Vermeil QUIT. So Lurie should take the advice of a LOSER and a QUITER?
Trying to keep my skepticism under wraps, but seriously, if Lurie doesn't change his thinking, we will never win a championship. Anyone holding out hope for Gruden, cowher or Lovie Smith, forget it. Lurie's MO is apparently to show he is smarter than everyone else and give a first timer his big shot. If any big name coach came, they would be the story. this way, lurie and Howie remain the story. Lurie, PLEASE hire a football guy to run this!!! FrankieT
The Eagles sold the fans on the "Gold Standard" for several years. Accepting that "being competitive" every year took the place of winning-it-all. Now the fans know better. This team, under its current ownership and management, is never going to win-it-all. Boru- Wow! Nice to come back and see all the negativity. Roseman has the title of GM but Reid had final say over all football operations. It was Andy who chose the players and Roseman worked out the contracts. So how is it Roseman's fault if he listened to the VP of Football Operations/Head Coach and signed a player Andy wanted? But then again you all know all the ins and outs on the workings of the Eagles front office. What's the rush anyway? Eagles should just hire the first big name guy out there? This isn't KC. I think they are doing the right thing taking their time, interviewing as many guys as they can and make the best decision possible.
