Howie: Candidates Know We'll Support Coach

POSTED: Wednesday, January 9, 2013, 11:51 AM

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman briefly updated the Eagles' website on the team's coaching search Wednesday. Roseman said he is confident potential candidates know the Eagles offer a framework conducive to success.

The men who seemed to be the top candidates, Penn State coach Bill O'Brien and Oregon coach Chip Kelly, decided to stay in college. The Eagles are interviewing former Bears coach Lovie Smith Thursday. They have announced plans to speak with Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians, Cincinnati offensive coordinator Jay Gruden, and Seattle defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, though those interviews are not set.

"They know we have a great owner" in Jeffrey Lurie, Roseman told interviewer Dave Spadaro. "Who's going to support and give as much resources as possible to make sure we succeed. They know that we have just supported a coach for 14 years. We're built that way. This whole organization is built to support a head coach. They know that, not only in actions, but it words. All they have to do is call Andy Reid and know that that's how we do it.

"We develop family here. People who have been here have been here for a long time, they've grown together ... It's been a very positive experience. I'm not saying we're the perfect franchise, by any stretch of the imagination, but it's a great tribute to Jeffrey and what he's building here."

Roseman said lengthy, nine-hour interviews like the ones with O'Brien and Kelly touch on every detail of a potential coach's operation.

"How they run meetings, how they run training camp, what they're looking for in players, what they're looking for in coaches, getting an overall picture, because being a head coach in the National Football League, that's a big job, and you're a CEO. You have to have a plan and know what you're doing in every area," Roseman said. "You'd be surprised at how detailed these people are, when it comes to strength and conditioning, or a training staff, or video, they have the answers, and it's very interesting to hear."

The Eagles never promised a quick resolution to the search -- in fact, Lurie sketched out exactly the opposite last week when he spoke with reporters,

"Jeffrey's been very adamant with us, that the key is getting the right guy. The key isn't getting the right guy as quickly as possible," Roseman said. "So that's what we're going to do."

you can count on dave spadaro to ask the hard questions

and what kind of "family" fires its PR person days before Christmas? or tries to dock the salary of a guy (mike patterson) who battled brain cancer? or fires its director of season ticket sales days after thanksgiving?

if his idea of a good "family" is the Gambinos, then he's right

Howie - Bill O'Brien and Chip Kelly thought about the idea of working with you a non qualified football person and they ran back to college football !!

O'Brien and Kelly used the Eagles to get more money from their colleges.

Nepotism. Yep, that usually works out well. Kudos to you and Jeffy. 2 years after Jeffy sees the light and brings in a real GM, the Eagles might be relevant again. Sad.

Your darn right it's not perfect and maybe the family has gotten too close because you've won nothing Howie, get it? NOTHING, in my mind that's what Jeffrey Lurie has won in 16 years. ZERO.

How about stopping the charade of unqualified college and assistant coaches and do what both Vermiel and Jaws recommend. Of course Lurie and Howie know more than those guys.

For Howie to address this issue, says it all. this team is no more desirable than the Jacksonville Jaguars. As long as Howie the Clown is GM, this team will never get a top flight coach.

Wow there's a lot of negativity. 4-12 will do that. Thing is, we don't know s*** about how good Roseman & Lurie are at their jobs because Reid was in charge of football operations. Remember when Reid had good McNabb who led us through improvisation and a slew of great asst coaches ? As the onion got peeled, the coaches went away, McNabb eroded and it all exposed him for what he is. Point is, similar to that, with Reid gone, only now will we know how capable Howie Roseman and crew are. I agree he doesn't appear to fit the role he has, but we could be wrong. Think about what you want for an offensive line coach. Would you picture a smallish Latino man who's never played the position ? Yet Juan Castillo did pretty good for a log time. With that said, I will remain skeptical. But enough with the negativity.

It is apparent that you clearly haven't been paying attention, or you have relented and decided to take the nonsense that Lurie spouted in his press conference as truth. To say that Roseman could not be implicated in the 2010 and 2011 draft was a joke! You can research it for yourself and hear the bull that he uttered regarding Danny Watkins, Jaiquawn Jarrett, etc. Also, he was the mastermind behind the 2011 off-season spending spree that brought in stiff's like Nhamdi, Babin, Steve Smith. Eagles fans justifiable reasons to have feelings of angst.

Did Howie ever stop to think that we may lose candidates strictly because a coaching candidate wouldn't want to report to a fantasy football GM?

Howie, Please explain why a coach would come here and tie his future to your talent selection....Sorry little man, but you are NOT a football guy and though you cut your teeth on contracts under Joe, you are a neophyte in the real world of football....and your owner cannot make a decision and is a wuss......but dont worry, we are sure you can find some desperate coach who will take any NFL job....that will be bad for the franchise short term, but in the long run, you will get fired or moved over and Jeffery will bring in a Footall guy

I think Howie is finally seeing firsthand what fans were speculating even before Andy was fired, and that is, once Jeff introduces Howie as the guy that will be picking the players for all the prospective coaches, they're out of here. Remember, in the last search, they had Banner, who was the cap guy, and didn't profess to be a football guy, and Tom Modrak, a respected GM, to go along with Lurie. This time, coaches can only see themselves failing here and I don't blame them for not having the sunny vision Lurie has.
