What NFC results mean for McNabb

POSTED: Sunday, January 17, 2010, 4:33 PM

It looks as if Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb is about to be invited to his sixth Pro Bowl and first since 2004.

As previously noted, players whose teams are in the Super Bowl cannot play in the Pro Bowl, now that it has been moved to a week before the Super Bowl instead of a week after.

The three NFC quarterbacks selected are New Orleans' Drew Brees, Minnesota's Brett Favre and Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers. McNabb was chosen as the first alternate.

With the Saints and Vikings still alive, either Brees or Favre will withdraw because his team is heading to the Super Bowl. (And, honestly, even if the Vikings are eliminated, we could see Favre withdrawing anyway.) That opens a spot for McNabb.

The Pro Bowl is Jan. 31 in Miami.

Another change, as pointed out by ESPN's Adam Schefter, is that the coaches of the losing team in the conference championship games are no longer the Pro Bowl coaches. Again, with the earlier game, the league did not think coaches whose teams were eliminated days before should then have to get ready for the Pro Bowl.

Instead, of the two losing teams in each conference this weekend, the coach whose team has the better record goes to the Pro Bowl. That means the Cowboys' Wade Phillips gets the NFC nod over Arizona's Ken Whisenhunt.

Hopefully there is a big asterick next to his selection. I do not even want to see or hear his supporters crow about this. Its a very hollow choice, just like his stats.

Trade McNabb while he has some sort of value.

McNabb has his faults but for all the crying that comes from his detractors there is not another QB that could have carried this team for so long with so little. Not Brady, Manning, Farve, Romo or Brees and if you think otherwise compare them with their superstars against what #5 has done with the duds they put around him over the years. And lets not forget he plays for a bone headed coach who not only sat your #1 RB in favor of a rookie but he asks 5'10" Nick Cole to pass protect while at the same time calling the game like he was playing Madden on XBOX 360 or PlayStation, brilliant. Say what you will but #5 has carried this team and organization on his back for the last 11 years in a way no other could have. Who are you going to rely on after 5 is gone, Kolb? Don't make me brake out into hysterical laughter.

Horrible move to put the Pro Bowl the week before the Superbowl. There will be several Pro Bowlers on the two Superbowl teams who won't be playing plus you've got less time for guys to heal up so you'll probably get more guys skipping the game. It's not like the Pro Bowl was a competitive game before...however, at least the guys got rewarded with a trip to Hawaii. Now, it's become a total joke.

Just think, we can trade 5 and be just like the Broncos. Ahhh, what a joy that will be.

"it means he is pro qb once again and like everyone else there a playoff loss in 2010" Yes, except that for 20 teams every year it means no playoffs at all. So stop complaining.

dabirds, how far do you think they would have gotten without him considering the circumstances that surrounded the QB position over the years? You ask sarcastic questions but you know what the realtruth to them. Without #5 Eagles fans would be putting bags over their heads hiding in shame from losing seasons, Cowgirl fans would own us every year. No, they haven't won a SB yet but put any of the afore mentioned QBs in his position and you wouldn't even be talking playoffs.

So if Farve retires (this time for good), could Eagles get Jared Allen for McNabb?

McNabb fans: Did you see Farve against the Cowboys? Sorry, but McNabb is clearly a second tier qb. I don't dislike or blame McNabb for the the Eagles failures, but he is not one of the top 5 qb's, MAYBE he is 9 or 10 in the NFL. Sometimes he wow's me - sometimes he mows the grass.
