Holmgren on Birds' asking price for McNabb

POSTED: Friday, April 9, 2010, 11:15 AM

A bit more intrigue involving the process of the Donovan McNabb trade:

Browns president Mike Holmgren told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that the Browns did not get seriously involved in trade talks for McNabb before signing Jake Delhomme because the Eagles' asking price was too high.

Holmgren said it was "absolutely higher" than what the Eagles got from Washington. "But it always is [in the early stages], and you're not sure it's going to change," Holmgren said. "But it was pretty high."

He declined to specify the price, but he did say when the Browns talked to the Eagles they made it known that all three quarterbacks -- McNabb, Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick -- were available.

Holmgren said he is not disappointed that the price tag dropped and said he was "pumped" to have Delhomme on the roster.

He also said he is not big on trading a player within the division, adding he had not talked to his longtime friend Andy Reid since the deal was completed.

"Just as a general rule, I don't think it's ever a good deal to trade [with a division rival]," he said. "Clearly, Andy has such a great relationship with Donovan that it seemed to me that he did that because he cares for the kid and he wanted to do something for him. Now, Andy's nicer than I am."

During his appearance Wednesday on the Dan Patrick Show, Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins commented on more than Cliff Lee. After not wanting to talk much about Donovan McNabb on Monday, Rollins had this to say on the radio, courtesy of Sportsradiointerviews.com:

"Whew. Well, I like Donovan in an Eagles’ uniform. Obviously, when you go to a place you have three quarterbacks and you haven’t won a Super Bowl, everybody starts to get upset and someone has to go. In baseball, we always know it’s the manager. In football, I guess it’s easier to deal a quarterback.”

Been meaning to get to this for a while, but all the news has intervened.

Pro Football Focus, a great stats and analysis Web site, has analyzed drops by receivers from last season. The site has a formula and devised a figure it calls Drop Percentage.

For Eagles fans, the most interesting news is that Jason Avant was credited with no drops last season -- as in zero -- and had 41 receptions. He is one of only three players with no drops and a minimun of 30 balls that a receiver got his hands on. The others are Greg Camarillo from Miami with 51 receptions and Bobby Meachem of the Saints with 45.

Goodness Gracious! This is not news. Of course the initial asking price was higher than the #37 and a conditional 2011 4th. Here is lesson #1 when trying to negotiate a successful deal: you never START negotiating with the amount you are willing to FINISH at. If you want $10, you start the negotiation at $20.

I can only imagine the initial conversations... "Yeah we're looking for two first rounders and your first-born child"

Yea, I would be real pumped to have Delhomme over McNabb ... not. But, that comment makes me feel better about his rule not to trade within the division.

Avant could be the Eagles' version of Wes Welker. Often times, he's left out when when discussing the "young guns." He's a valuable cog in the machine.

CSpangler - I've long been a McNabb fan, and I still doubt a lot of the Kolb hype, especially that "the offense won't miss a beat with Kolb..." especially considering that Kolb may have to play behind a make-shift O-line. **** But there are times when I just think D-Mac is done... like his last two games against the Cowboys, and his brief and disappointing appearance in the Pro Bowl. **** For some reason, even though I expect Kolb to struggle... a lot, I'm more excited about this upcoming season than I have been in a while (2005 - I actually expected them to return to the Super Bowl that year). Maybe it will be legitimate hope for the future. Who knows?

Ruiz the Great hit the target. If Holmgren is pumped to have DelHomme, he may be ready to quit coaching. At best he should be hoping for a turnaround, that Delhomme once again plays like a decent starter.
