First Cuts No Surprise

POSTED: Saturday, August 23, 2008, 4:47 PM

The Eagles only waited a matter of hours after Friday's preseason win at New England to announce their first roster trims. Veteran fullback Luke Lawton, rookie free agent wideout Frantz Hardy and former Rutgers guard Cameron Stephenson were released. The Eagles must cut two more players to get to 75 by Tuesday. The next trim after that is down to the regular-season limit of 53.

Lawton's abrupt departure might have been a mild surprise a week ago, before the team announced Tony Hunt was moving to fullback. It was obvious then that the Eagles didn't feel they had the guy they needed at that position. Lawton looked like the favorite to win the spot when the Birds traded for him from Indianapolis in June, but he was slow to pick up the offense, seemed smaller than his listed 6-0, 240, and made little impression in camp.

Hardy, a spindly 6-0, 180, was nagged by injuries. Stepehenson, who spent last season on the Packers' practice squad, was the guy the Eagles brought in when Shawn Andrews didn't show for camp last month; he showed up at quite a disadvantage in learning the scheme.

I thought Klecko was going to get a chance to be our fullback when he was signed........We were told he carrtied the ball at least 400 times in his career..........Havn't had a fullback since they released Fetko, because he was too slow. Could have signed Tony Richardson, All-Pro, from Minnesota who is now with the Jets......We never learn do we?....Always looking for a cheap diamond in the rough. (That goes for almost all player additions)

Gasperson is so popular that he is rumored to be replacement for Mendte.

Watch the waiver wire boys....that is where your next starting receiver will come from. AR is king of the trash pickers.

Keep Avant, Baskett, Brown, Childress, Curtis & Jackson. Put McBride on the P squad & cut Gasperson, Jamal Jones & Greg Lewis. Lewis has had plenty of time to develop, he still makes too many mistakes and he's still a spindly 180 lbs. With Jackson at 170 lbs, the Birds need more muscle. But I'd still package Brown and a high pick for A. Boldin!

Yes, Gasperson's stats strongly suggest that "all he does is get open and catch passes." For example, last year he appeared in one game and caught a whopping 0 passes for 0 yards. Nice analysis, Jaws Junior.

You may make fun of Gasperson, but he doesn't make mistakes like Lewis and Baskett. All he does is find a way to get open and catch passes. And he doesn't fumble at the goal line or let passes bounce off his helmet. Cut Baskett and Lewis both!

I would trade KOLB and our first round pick today for Boldin. I live in Phoenix, and he is a younger T.O. I would throw in Sheppard as well.

Watch them cut Clemons and keep McDougle....only to have him get injured in the first game of the season.

We've wasted all this time on McDougal - it'd be silly to cut him now that he's actually showing some promise.

McDougal Disaster? Really. I guess you must have missed the part where he had 2 sacks and a handful of tackles last night. Now I know he hasn't lived up to his 1st round pick status and all but I think it will be hard to cut a guy that has out-played a lot of other DEs this season.

Can't the McDougal disaster be ended now? Can't they get a real fullback instead of guys who don't block catch or carry but are just good guys to have around?

BREAKING NEWS!!!!! In a desperate attempt to upgrade their receiving corps the Arizona Cardinals offer Anquan Boldin and a first round pick in the upcoming NFL draft for Michael Gasperson of the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles quickly told the Cardinals they aren't interested. Philadelphia Andy Reid could not be reached for comment however Joe Banner released the following statement, "We really really love our receivers right now, and first round picks are overrated. Also we expect Gasperson to be a major contributer to our practice squad this season."

Insider still says "it will be quite hard" to not find a roster spot for Gasperson.
