I don't get as offended by Andy Reid as some folks in the media. I don't pretend to understand the Eagles' coach, why he is like he is. I think he's an extremely uncomfortable public speaker who, much like his quarterback, sometimes has a hard time articulating what he's trying to say in plain English. I think his unease at being in front of the microphones factors into his perceived testiness. And, bottom line, I don't think it much matters how a coach treats us if he wins football games, which Reid has done, more often than not. I think reporters who evaluate coaches and players primarily on how they treat reporters are doing their readers, viewers, or listeners a disservice.

All that said, I have no idea why Reid got snarky yesterday when radio reporter Brian Seltzer asked a perfectly legitimate, respectful question. Seltzer wondered if the fairly smooth minicamp that ended Monday was an improvement over the situation a year ago, when Reid was still dealing with the aftermath of his sons' arrests, and Donovan McNabb was still sidelined following ACL surgery.

Reid's answer: "I thought you guys struggled to find a positive story. You did a good job finding the negative ones, but there are plenty of  positive ones that you could find out there. There are some good young players that you could really focus in on and look at. Other than that, it was business as usual."

If Reid was talking about finding negative stories last year, well, I thought everybody in the local media handled Reid's family problems with dignity, empathy, and courtesy -- more courtesy than the people who regularly cover the team have gotten in return, with Reid making his most extensive comments about his troubles in Philadelphia Magazine and The New York Times.

Reading over Monday's remarks again, it seems more likely he was talking about this year. I suppose he is disappointed that the focus of minicamp coverage was 1. Lito Sheppard, here and untraded, and 2. Donovan McNabb, returning to an offense that did not make any dramatic upgrades at skill positions, something McNabb and other Eagles had seemed to imply was necessary.

If that's the coach's gripe, well, Andy, tough beans. I think our collective news judgment is a lot better than yours. I'm not getting a lot of fan e-mails asking me to stop writing about Lito and Donovan and focus on Andy Studebaker. You ought to have been very happy and relieved by the way this minicamp went. Nobody on your team got hurt, arrested, or found himself on the wrong end of a firearm registered to Marvin Harrison.

Sheppard, McNabb, Brian Westbrook, and Sheldon Brown all spoke with reporters and not one of them poured any gasoline. A few people acknowledged that the crowded defensive backfield has to be a little uncomfortable for the protagonists in that drama. That was about it. Yeah, a few reporters and commentators (not all of us, by a long shot; not the ones most fans take seriously) might have worked feverishly to stretch these meager ingredients into chicken salad. You're touchy about that, and you've been in Philadelphia how long now?

All is well, dude, or as well as it ever gets around here. Relax. At least until June 3, when Lito either shows or doesn't show for full-team OTAs.

If you need a mood-lightener, there's nothing better than a BANG! cartoon mocking the Cowboys. And yeah, it probably should be rated PG-13. Rule of thumb: If "SouthPark" offends you, don't click.

I agree with Les, Andy is a wee-bit touchy-feely but nothing new there! They should work something out with Lito even if it's a very nice (anonymous) present by an adoring (well to do) fan (that never happens does it?) Who wouldn't like that secondary, it would be one of the leagues best. C'mon, someone loosen the purse strings, I think most of us fans would love to see him still on the team this upcoming season...

...and get a high profile WR...OK, OK, I was just trying to stir the pot. I, too, agree with Les on this issue. "Chill Andy." In fact, here's some valuable yet free PR advise: AR, come out and honestly apologize for your remark(s) yesterday. (Probably beneath you but you'd no doubt be amazed at the goodwill that little gesture could/would generate...) Jez my 2 cents... Hey, how bout the Phightin's last night?! Holy Mackeral Andy?!?!?

"i dont get as offended..." if you read the rest of the article it sure sounds like it. as a whole, philadelphia media has been absolutely terrible in writing articles about the eagles for as long as i can remember. it's like you punch someone in the face and then ask them why they have a black eye. you threw the punch.

Andy needs to get his own house in order on this (perhaps a sternly worded mail to Spadaro?). As in, if we're not supposed to ask about Lito, then why are there no fewer than four (4) photos of Lito and Asante together on the Birds site in their Mini-Camp photo album? I'mjustsayinizall. http://bountybowl.com/2008/05/05/they-doth-protest-too-much/

Les, you missed my point. it's every year, every loss. every questionable move is scrutinized by you guys like it's ALWAYS the wrong thing. There are Philadelphia writers already putting the Eagles at 7-9 the day after the schedule came out. you look at the question, the person brought up his family situation again. of course he's going to get defensive.

the "punch in the face" part meant that you guys have been beating him up for years and then wonder why he doesnt give you good answers now, or might get defensive when asked questions.

I agree with keeping Lito, three CB's with that track record and a fourth with "tremendous upside" (basketball phrase). I kinda get why Andy is a bit short with the media, he's a little tired of answering the same old questions no matter how they are asked. We all know what he had to deal with last year and we as fans don't need the re-hash. I want to know about Tony Hunt and Ryan Moats, who are the Birds going to keep?

I think Mike Schmidt said it best whe he talked about Philly being the only place where you can experience the thrill of victory and the agony of reading about it the next day. As a Philly fan living in NY, I actually now reside in a City where the media doesn't hate the teams they cover and the attitude trickles down. Philly should be proud as heck of their teams and embarrassed as heck of their sportswriters. A change in attitude may actually go a long way towards ultimately getting that long-awaited parade down Broad Street.

ok, les, consider this an email asking for stories about andy studebaker and joe mays. most of us football fans don't care about all of the drama that is mostly created about you the writers. we care about the players and what's going to happen on the field. the off the field stuff is as much a distraction to us as it is the team, yet you in the media insist on beating this stuff in to the ground. you would be much better served posting in depth profiles of every draft pick and free agent signing. there are some very intriguing prospects on our roster. write whatever you want, but i'm just telling you that football fans want football articles. save the soap opera stuff for the housewives.

another thing les, you need to know that the average fan like myself doesn't care a bit what outlet coaches use to tell their stories. that you were offended that reid didn't give his story to you or one of your lackeys is your problem and of no concern to any of us. that is an industry insider issue. it's similar to when i just want to buy something and the salesman starts using complicated industry jargon. i don't care. give me info on the players/product i'm interested in and leave your grudges out of this. i thought they taught impartiality in journalism school?

I did like the cartoon, but I liked the other Pacman once better...something about "Looks Like Omar Epps Guy" and a cameo by Donovan McNabb made it funny.

I wonder how Reid would have reacted if he was asked if he was still on his 5 year plan to win a Super Bowl going into his 10th year. The only negative is Lito still being on this team creating an awkward situation, and Reid's paranoia in trying to deal with it after all those significant offers that he and Joe the liar Banner claimed they had received after the signing of Samuel. Reid's act is getting old after not being able to win a championship since he has been here, he's still off by a hair I guess.

ok billro3, he's only the best coach we've had in the last 28 years. i loved buddy ryan, but let's face it, he's no andy reid. so let's fire reid and bring back kotite. marion campbell? wait, howbout you. i'm sure some jabroni from fishtown like you could do better. and you're wrong. andy reid has won a championship. he won the nfc title in 2004.

if anyone thinks there was a abundance of STAR wr in the draft then your blind. we did make efforts top bring a star player in and it didnt works out. i would much rather have our crew then a the money grubbing guys who wants the media more on him than the best interest in the team.

also tell me what other coach has brought so much to our franchise. remind me of the last coach thet did squat from bringing a squard that was falling apart 10 years ago and now if contenders in every game, brought us how many conference championship games. sorry his boys messed up and you want to hold that against him. is your family perfect???

Mike: Again, look at the question that was asked, and then look at the response. Nobody was punched in the face, or anywhere else. Point of post: Andy should chill, not "I hate Andy." Is this not clear enough?
