Eagles to look at linebacker

POSTED: Friday, May 1, 2009, 10:50 AM

After the end of this weekend's minicamp, the Eagles have scheduled a visit and physical with undrafted rookie free agent linebacker Josh Mauga from Nevada, his agent told the Lahontan Valley News.

Mauga, 6-1, 243, was the WAC leader in tackles through the first seven games of the 2007 season and then injured an MCL, but returned in time to record 11 tackles in the Wolfpack's bowl game. In 2008, he played through a torn pectoral muscle and had 54 tackles with 3.5 sacks. He took part in the scouting combine and Nevada's pro day and then had surgery. He is halfway through a 10-week rehab and agent Michael Hoffman said he is ahead of schedule.

He has played outside in a 3-4 and also played the both middle and strong side in Nevada's 4-3 as a senior, according to NFL.com.

“The issue with Josh is strictly medical,” Hoffman said. “People understand and know he’s a talented player. At this point people want to see he’s healthy. It’s not that he’s missing anything (workouts). Once he’s healthy he’ll be somewhere.”

Hoffman said a number of teams have expressed interest in Mauga, but the biggest concern right now is his health.

“They have a strong interest in Josh and they want to see how it goes with him,” Hoffman said of the Eagles. “Other teams were interested, but at this point, they’re the first team to step up. Numerous teams have shown interest but want to get a sense of what he can do (after he’s medically cleared to play).”

For those of you who are historically oriented, today marks the 40th anniversary of Leonard Tose's purchase of the Eagles from Jerry Wolman. Tose spent $16.5 million for the Birds, which was then the most ever paid for a pro football franchise. Hard to believe that the Eagles are now worth more than a billion.

Typical Banner/Heckert. Forever chasing the bargain player with an injury. They could sqeeze a nickel until it bleeds. Stacy Andrews out til July with a torn ACL. The CB they drafted last year had a torn ACL, Jack Isomething. Couldn't even workout with the team. This year we get the torn ACL TE from Florida. It never ends.

the eagles lined up many sparrows and pigons to look at a linebacker. the linebacker came away completly white with some dripping to the ground. fiveisaking viewed the matter with scorn.

They have so much to spend on free agents and rookies, but they refuse to pay the City the money thew owe.

I live in the west, and I have heard Mauga's name over the past few years. Considering it is costing the Eagles practically nothing to take a look, kick the tires, etc., it is a good gamble. If healthy, the kid actually has a decent upside.

I like the move. It's obvious the kid has talent and is dedicated. Why not look at him once he's healthy and can play. The Eagles have a pretty good history of finding talent among undrafted rookies. Also, why all the "haters" on this board? Can't we just all get along :)

Ok so, we have a Faniaka, a Mailei, a Tupou, and we are going after a Muaga. I think all Andy wants in the long run is a Luau. He may even throw in Fokou, Abiamiri, and Ikegwuonu to add some Caribbean flair.

5isaKing, are are unbelievable. The Eagles spent 100,000 million dollars acquiring free agent tackles this off season. Not to mention their other free agent acquisitions. But don't let reality get in the way of your ignorant and baseless prejudices. Sheesh.

5isaKing... use your brain. All undrafted free agents are equally inexpensive. They're looking at him because they think he has a high upside IF he's healthy. Relax. Every signing doesn't need to have a 10 mil signing bonus. Seriously though, use your brain.
