The Eagles signed cornerback Gerard Lawson to a three-year deal.
He takes the roster spot of returner Jorrick Calvin, who surprisingly was placed on injured reserve yesterday with a back injury after not practicing this week.
The Eagles might have opted to sign practice squad running back Joique Bell, but he was signed by the Indianapolis Colts last night.
That could mean that Chad Hall will return kickoffs when the Eagles face the Vikings. Andy Reid presumably will shed more light on that subject when he addresses the media this afternoon.
Lawson played in 20 career games with the Browns in 2008 and '09. He played mostly on special teams, notching five special teams tackles.
After being released by the Browns before the start of the 2010 regular season, Lawson signed with the Hartford Colonials, of the UFL, and had 23 kickoff returns for 483 yards (21.0 average).
In college at Oregon State, he averaged 23.3 yards on 62 kickoff returns with one touchdown, while blocking one punt on special teams.

Even Joe Webb realizes that Sunday's matchup between quarterbacks is a mismatch between he and Michael Vick. Give him credit for showing humility in the face of the obvious.
"Michael Vick is an incredible athlete, a great player. I look up to him. I've been watching him since I was a little boy," Webb said.
The rookie has guided the Vikings in the last two games with injuries to Brett Favre and Tavaris Jackson and is presumably auditioning to get a leg up on the competition for next year.
"I think about that, but my focus is right now," Webb said. "I want to get better play by play, day by day. That's later down the road. If I play well now, the future will take care of itself."

Speaking of Favre, he failed baseline testing for the second consecutive day and has not been cleared to practice. The Vikings are willing to wait until Saturday, when they depart for Philadelphia, but at this point Favre remains a spectator.
"Not much improvement for him," interim head coach Leslie Frazier said.

It's weird, but seeing Favre retire (as it seems he now must do) is a bit sad. Didn't see it coming (the sad part). The prospects of not seeing him out there anymore make me realize how much I appreciated his talent. I'm not a Favre fan, but I can certainly respect him as a hall of fame type player. He was good for the league. I wonder if John Madden is crying about this? Scorekeeper
Seems like a nice versatile pickup - can you ever have enough high speed CB/return specialist types? I would say probably not, especially if you're the Eagles who seem to shred them up quicker than than most. If you're going to go the route of having all or most of your CBs be the 5'7" to 5'10" burners and most of them well under 200 lbs., you better be prepared with a large stable of these players. I think speed is the most important thing in dbacks as well (gotta stop the big play - priority #1) but the Eagles lack of depth has too often been exposed when these smaller players get the injuries that physics demand will happen. With teh exception of last year, Favre has not been a good QB for 8 years. He's a selfish &$@*& that will probably carry on his dog and pony show into next season. Shooby- Still paying for releasing amendola in favor of Reggie brown at the beginning of last season. I think reid hoped hall would be an amendola clone but hasnt worked out that way.

That's hardly true. His last year in Green Bay, he took them to the NFC Championship Game. He followed that up with a weird year in New York (they looked good to start the season, and only fell apart as the season wore on), a great year in Minnesota (another NFC title game), and an injury-plagued season this year. You could say that he hasn't been a dominant QB, as he once was, but saying that he hasn't been "good" in 8 years is just flat-out wrong. Mike P - If Favre doesn't carry his dog and pony show into next season, ESPN sure will.
I am throwing the biggest party as soon as Farve retires...I am so tired of seeing his mug on TV!! The Philly Shadow
Unfortunately, we have not seen the last of his mug on TV. If the recent years of retire, unretire, retire, unretire,... and will he play won't he play is any indication, we will see the ego of Brett Fav-ruh on TV in one capacity or another for years to come. Reality show, anyone? I hope I am wrong. P Even
I think his gift sack to Strahan cost Favre some dgnity joeibt- "between he and Michael Vick"? It's "him," not "he." I guess you don't have copy editors for blogs, but you guys are supposed to be professional writers! Bartleby
