The Eagles have released Tony Hunt, abandoning his experiment at fullback, and signed journeyman linebacker/special teams player Tracy White, reflecting continuing concerns about their special-teams play.

The release of Hunt shows the Eagles made a mistake in their evaluation prior to the 2007 draft. They chose Hunt in the third round out of Penn State, despite the fact that he played in an offense not at all like their offense and was not a good receiver or blocker or particularly quick.

He was moved to fullback before the exhibition game against Carolina in a last-ditch effort to keep him on the roster and won the job coming out of the preseason. He started two games, but the Eagles shuffled their running backs last week with Brian Westbrook's absence and Dan Klecko saw more time at fullback, with Hunt not even getting on the field.

Hunt had four carries for nine yards this season.

White, a 6-year veteran, spent the last two-plus seasons with the Green Bay Packers before being released last Tuesday.

Originally signed by Seattle as an undrafted rookie in 2003 out of Howard, White played in 20 games with the Seahawks, recording 26 tackles and one sack. He spent the 2005 season as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, before signing with the Packers in 2006.

White has racked up 68 career special teams tackles in 69 games, including two in the 2007 postseason. He also recovered a fumbled punt in the end zone for a touchdown on last September against the Eagles.

In case you are wondering, White will wear Jeremiah Trotter's old No. 54.

Of course, the big news of the day on the trading deadline is bound to inflame Eagles fans as the Dallas Cowboys have acquired wide receiver Roy Williams from Detroit. The Cowboys gave up a first-round pick in 2009, plus a
third- and sixth-rounder in 2009 for Williams and a seventh-round pick in ’09.

Meanwhile, Kansas City tight end Tony Gonzalez was not traded at the deadline. An Eagles source confirmed that the team did make an effort to get him.

All you PSU homers need to shut up, he was a running back in the soft Big 11 conference, it's not the NFL. The only other decent running back to come out of PSU is LJ and he beats women at clubs and will be hanging out with Pacman soon enough. Tony Hunt can't block and can't catch. Therefore he doesn't fit in the system, get over it and worry about your crippled 97 year old coach who may pass any day now

Nothing that the Eagles current regime does at running back surprises me. They would not know what to do with a talented running back if they tripped over one and if I was a quality running back coming out of college I would pray to go to any team BUT the Eagles. Having said that Tony Hunt was definitely not a quality running back and he will not be missed. Neither would Booker. Definitely time for Andy to hit the road and hopefully he takes DM with him.

Hunt is 2nd all time rusher at Penn State, so Eagles draft him in 3rd round but don't want him as a RB but try and covert him to FB? Brillant! Andy Reid has been here too long, and needs to move on. Reid has already proven he can't win the Super Bowl so why is he still here?

By the way, for some of you guys, let me know next season if there's room in your fantasy football league. Based on the trades you would make and how quickly you will cut any player, I would love to be in your fantasy football leagues. Sure, I'll get a little annoyed when you send me trades like offering me Tony Hunt for Felix Jones or offering me Lito Sheppard for Larry Fitzgerald and expect me to take those deals.

I love all of the "threats" to stop following the Eagles unless they get rid of Reid, get rid of McNabb, etc., etc. I'm sure Lurie reads these boards every night and he'll be losing sleep tonight because some guy threatened on a message board for the 100th time in his life that isn't following the Eagles anymore unless they do something he wants them to do. Funny how those same people who supposedly were "done" following the Eagles then keep posting each week about the team, the latest game and the latest moves by the team. I'm not buying the whole argument that Reid has never been a good coach because the NFC East was down for a few years. It's not like the Eagles just won the NFC East and flamed out in the playoffs. They won playoffs games and made it 4 straight NFC championship games. So they beat a whole lotta teams in the NFC during those 4 years, not just the NFC East teams.

The talent evaluation is a major part of this team's problems. Third rounders like Hunt are supposed to stick and play. It's a significant mistake.

CSpangler you hit the nail on the head! You listen to any NFL expert/insider talk about Andy Reid and they always, always list him as a top 5 coach in the league. And in reference to Roy Williams: he was the 2nd best receiver on an 0-6 team!!! He had one year of over 1,000 yards receiving and is going to be a FA after this season. Perhaps I'm dyslexic, but do Roy Williams numbers NOT pale in comparison to Desean Jackson's to this point? We didn't and still don't need another WR. We need health and better execution. Eagles will finish 12-4 and make serious noise come January!!!!!! FLY EAGLES FLY!!!!

Someone's got to explain this one to me. Six games in and Westbrook has already been injured twice. Booker rarely gets on the field and when he does he can't block or gain so much as a yard. We now have only one running back in Buckhalter. How can you win with this?

Here is the formula to the Eagles success. Small fragile running backs, small defensive ends, small receivers, small cornerbacks, small minded coach, small payroll. It's a great formula for a 7-9 team. It works year in, year out. Roy Wiliams knew what he was doing.

I am no longer an Eagles fan until And Reid resigns and/or is fired. I don't mind mistakes every once in a while, but all Andy Reid is is constant mistakes not only every game day, but during situations like having an oportunity like obtaining a calibar WR like this. They have 2 1st round picks in 2009, you know they are going to trade one of them for multiple picks. Therefore, until Andy Reid is gone, I am not currently a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles.....GO STEELERS!

C'mon folks, you all know who Tracy White is... he's the guy that recovered Greg Lewis' punt return fumble ( another great idea by Reid)for a TD in the opening two minutes of last years season opening loss to Green Bay! Hunt couldn't play a lick, so no great loss one way or the other.

McNabb is making throws that he has never made over the course of his career and people are still trying to blame him. He's throwing timing patterns and throwing them well and people still want to trade him? C'mon.. Don't you realize that Kolb is unproven and most likely will never be the QB that McNabb is?

There are some great observations here for example: "Hunt's a 3rd rounder, yet we can't trade a 3rd rounder." Also, "Hunt's gone, but Booker remains!" Astute stuff! It’s good to see that the consensus is beginning to catch up with the reality that Andy Reid should be gone. I admit that he initially did some good things here. However, I have come to realize Reid is a mirage who first appeared during a “down” period in the NFC East, and has been progressively disappearing since the team‘s appearance in the Superbowl. His offensive philosophy, talent evaluation, play calling and reluctance to adapt will continue to keep him in the “middle” echelon of NFL coaches. When he should be building the Eagles to beat NFC East opponents (with a balanced attack), he instead contributes to the betterment of those same opponents by trading away first-round picks and passing on the infrequent and precious opportunities to acquire top-notch free agents (especially No. 1 receivers). The bottom line is Reid’s shortcomings far outweigh his accomplishments.

In order to be successful in the NFL you must be able to run the ball. Andy Reid has never truly considered having a running game so the Tony Hunt move is not surprising to me. If A R dosen't believe in the run and he continuously signs average and below receivers, how can the Eagles become sucessful and not to mention becoming a contender. What happened to real football??

As long as the stepfords are willing to pay $65 a ticket and they have that long waiting list for season tickets, why should they commit to winning. I would have cut Booker before Hunt - somebody explain to me how he is still on this team? He couldn't cut it in Miami, and he sure can't cut it on this team. Your entire division loses this weekend, Dallas loses their QB and two CB's, and the Eagles have an opportunity to fill some glaring holes on this roster, yet they do NOTHING! $16M in CAP space going right to Mr. Lurie. This is another indication that the Eagles just want to remain "competitive" which is the big reason why I can't sink my heart and soul into this team or franchise!

How does anyone know we didn't make an offer to Detroit? Or Kansas City? Or Cincinnati? It takes two to tango. Maybe the Lions simply chose the Cowboys' offer over ours. Maybe they realized the Cowboys won't win more than 2-3 more games all year and their 1st rounder is going to be a top-10 pick. Or maybe we didn't do anything at all and Coach Reid likes the group he has, particularly with people getting healthy. We simply don't know and therefore criticizing is very, very short-sighted.

I am sure D Mac would have loved to have Roy Williams and he would have fit in well with the organization since he has a reputation as a poor tipper - cheap is the word in Filly so Lurie should have loved him! We didn't get Williams, didn't get Gonzalez and the Cowboys got Williams. That hurts. The price for Williams was steep but considering our 1st round pick would be a late-round pick and we don't seem to even be using our 1st round picks anyway, I would have made that trade. I don't think there was any mis-evaluation on Hunt. Hunt was drafted to be the "big back" that everyone said we needed. The Eagles didn't draft him with the idea of turning him into a receiving back or a fullback. However, Buckhalter's health made any expected contributions by him doubtful. The fact that Buckhalter has been healthy over the last few seasons screwed Hunt's chances with the team more than anything else. The Eagles prefer a speed guy in the 3rd back role and there just isn't room on any team for 4 runnings backs to play. With Buckhalter healthy, it's been a numbers game that's been working Hunt since Day 1.

Come on people. Going out and stockpiling every big name player doesn't equate to a championship, i.e. the NY Giants of 2007. Stay positive. The Birds have the talent to get the job done. McNabb is fine. AR's play call is horrible and LJ is non-existent. Get rid of the latter 2 and we will be fine.

This is the what the Eagles do...I am furious and may sell my Thanksgiving day tickets. We sign some scrub linebacker while they let Dallas get Roy Williams....What a joke...I haven't been this angry about sports for a very long time.

I dont know if this is good or bad. Still does nothing to improve the team. Play calling is weak, special teams is weaker, tight end is terrible, and still in need of a true full back. AR has lost his mind. Time for Reid, Segrest, R. Brown, and LJ to pack their bags.

Les BowenLes Bowen has covered the Eagles for the Daily News since 2002. Before that, he spent nearly 13 years covering the Flyers. It took Les only a few seasons after the switch to figure out that there was no penalty box at the Linc, and that the time really wasn't his, despite what Andy Reid kept saying. Les came to Philadelphia and the Daily News from Charlotte in 1983. In the intervening years, he has pretty much lost track of NASCAR, and his accent. He, his wife Barbara, and their two sons live in Haddon Township, New Jersey.

You can now follow Les Bowen on Twitter.

Paul DomowitchPaul Domowitch has been with the Daily News since 1982. He has spent most of his 27 years at the paper covering the Eagles and pro football. For the last 10 years, he’s been a selector for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A native of Wilkes-Barre and a graduate of Wilkes University, Domo came to the Daily News from the Fort Worth (Tx.) Star-Telegram, where he covered some god-awful Texas Ranger baseball teams. His first beat at the Daily News actually wa s boxing, which he covered just long enough to lose two sports coats to blood spatter before moving on to football. Domo and his wife Shelley, a University of Oklahoma grad and very dangerous to be around following a Sooner loss, have been married 29 years and have raised 2 terrific daughters – Allison, 26, a lawyer and graduate of Boston University School of Law; and Amy, 23, who graduated from Clemson and works in marketing and sales for a professional baseball team.
