Eagles release Tony Hunt

POSTED: Tuesday, October 14, 2008, 4:32 PM

The Eagles have released Tony Hunt, abandoning his experiment at fullback, and signed journeyman linebacker/special teams player Tracy White, reflecting continuing concerns about their special-teams play.

The release of Hunt shows the Eagles made a mistake in their evaluation prior to the 2007 draft. They chose Hunt in the third round out of Penn State, despite the fact that he played in an offense not at all like their offense and was not a good receiver or blocker or particularly quick.

He was moved to fullback before the exhibition game against Carolina in a last-ditch effort to keep him on the roster and won the job coming out of the preseason. He started two games, but the Eagles shuffled their running backs last week with Brian Westbrook's absence and Dan Klecko saw more time at fullback, with Hunt not even getting on the field.

Hunt had four carries for nine yards this season.

White, a 6-year veteran, spent the last two-plus seasons with the Green Bay Packers before being released last Tuesday.

Originally signed by Seattle as an undrafted rookie in 2003 out of Howard, White played in 20 games with the Seahawks, recording 26 tackles and one sack. He spent the 2005 season as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, before signing with the Packers in 2006.

White has racked up 68 career special teams tackles in 69 games, including two in the 2007 postseason. He also recovered a fumbled punt in the end zone for a touchdown on last September against the Eagles.

In case you are wondering, White will wear Jeremiah Trotter's old No. 54.

Of course, the big news of the day on the trading deadline is bound to inflame Eagles fans as the Dallas Cowboys have acquired wide receiver Roy Williams from Detroit. The Cowboys gave up a first-round pick in 2009, plus a
third- and sixth-rounder in 2009 for Williams and a seventh-round pick in ’09.

Meanwhile, Kansas City tight end Tony Gonzalez was not traded at the deadline. An Eagles source confirmed that the team did make an effort to get him.

Nothing that the Eagles current regime does at running back surprises me. They would not know what to do with a talented running back if they tripped over one and if I was a quality running back coming out of college I would pray to go to any team BUT the Eagles. Having said that Tony Hunt was definitely not a quality running back and he will not be missed. Neither would Booker. Definitely time for Andy to hit the road and hopefully he takes DM with him.

Hunt is 2nd all time rusher at Penn State, so Eagles draft him in 3rd round but don't want him as a RB but try and covert him to FB? Brillant! Andy Reid has been here too long, and needs to move on. Reid has already proven he can't win the Super Bowl so why is he still here?

The talent evaluation is a major part of this team's problems. Third rounders like Hunt are supposed to stick and play. It's a significant mistake.

Hunt never got a real chance at RB, so that's that. I would have kept him over Booker. I wonder if Booker will ever prove me wrong...

Its going to be fun to watch T.O.'s reaction to Roy Williams and how many less touches he may get.

CSpangler you hit the nail on the head! You listen to any NFL expert/insider talk about Andy Reid and they always, always list him as a top 5 coach in the league. And in reference to Roy Williams: he was the 2nd best receiver on an 0-6 team!!! He had one year of over 1,000 yards receiving and is going to be a FA after this season. Perhaps I'm dyslexic, but do Roy Williams numbers NOT pale in comparison to Desean Jackson's to this point? We didn't and still don't need another WR. We need health and better execution. Eagles will finish 12-4 and make serious noise come January!!!!!! FLY EAGLES FLY!!!!

Yes get rid of a .600 winning % coach. Cause there are lots of those coaches out there. We can pick anyone off the pile to coach the Eagles to the Superbowl right??? Seriously, some of these posts are either Cowboys fans or the worst fans in the world!!

Someone's got to explain this one to me. Six games in and Westbrook has already been injured twice. Booker rarely gets on the field and when he does he can't block or gain so much as a yard. We now have only one running back in Buckhalter. How can you win with this?

Guess Lurie will have Palin toss the coin at a future game..oh, better be after the bye week otherwise she'll be history after that..Roy Williams..we couldn't even do that right could we. Guess he must have dissed McNabb at some point which got him thumbs down from Big Fat

Here is the formula to the Eagles success. Small fragile running backs, small defensive ends, small receivers, small cornerbacks, small minded coach, small payroll. It's a great formula for a 7-9 team. It works year in, year out. Roy Wiliams knew what he was doing.

so the cowboys get roy williams and we cut tony hunt instead of trash lorenzo booker? this is why the only eagles jerseys i'll wear are throwbacks because they played the game the way it should be played

I am no longer an Eagles fan until And Reid resigns and/or is fired. I don't mind mistakes every once in a while, but all Andy Reid is is constant mistakes not only every game day, but during situations like having an oportunity like obtaining a calibar WR like this. They have 2 1st round picks in 2009, you know they are going to trade one of them for multiple picks. Therefore, until Andy Reid is gone, I am not currently a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles.....GO STEELERS!

C'mon folks, you all know who Tracy White is... he's the guy that recovered Greg Lewis' punt return fumble ( another great idea by Reid)for a TD in the opening two minutes of last years season opening loss to Green Bay! Hunt couldn't play a lick, so no great loss one way or the other.

Tony Hunt will re-emerge with a another team in a system that fits him..And, he will excell.I hope he plays the Eagles and gets 200 yards. The Eagles have NO PLANS to implement a Power running game and they will NEVER WIN THE BIG ONE until they do.

McNabb is making throws that he has never made over the course of his career and people are still trying to blame him. He's throwing timing patterns and throwing them well and people still want to trade him? C'mon.. Don't you realize that Kolb is unproven and most likely will never be the QB that McNabb is?

In order to be successful in the NFL you must be able to run the ball. Andy Reid has never truly considered having a running game so the Tony Hunt move is not surprising to me. If A R dosen't believe in the run and he continuously signs average and below receivers, how can the Eagles become sucessful and not to mention becoming a contender. What happened to real football??

I doubt KC would get rid of Tony for a 3rd rounder...Tony Hunt was not that great of a runner, from the first day he was ever here. He was very slow, and was simply just a bad pick. The most dissapointing news of the day was seeing Roy Williams go to Dallas....

The Eagles certainly won't be the bride or the brides maid, but maybe they could be the ring bearer or flower girl. As long as the stepfords are willing to pay $65 a ticket and they have that long waiting list for season tickets, why should they commit to winning. The time has come, the Phillies have passed the Iggles as "the" team.

I would have cut Booker before Hunt - somebody explain to me how he is still on this team? He couldn't cut it in Miami, and he sure can't cut it on this team. Your entire division loses this weekend, Dallas loses their QB and two CB's, and the Eagles have an opportunity to fill some glaring holes on this roster, yet they do NOTHING! $16M in CAP space going right to Mr. Lurie. This is another indication that the Eagles just want to remain "competitive" which is the big reason why I can't sink my heart and soul into this team or franchise!

What in the world is wrong with the Eagle's brass? We cut T. Hunt, a third rounder, bring in another hack linebacker...meanwhile, the Cowgirls get R. Williams, WR from Detroit? Also, the 'Skins sign Shawn Alexander, a big back (since we can't convert third and one from anywhere on the field)...who the f*** is Tracy White???? Who or what is evaluating the talent pool out there? Didn't Tony Gonzalez say he wanted out of KC? I'm sorry, I know I'm rambling but I am CONFUSED(?)All of these guys available...at positions where we could use them...and we get Tracy Freakin' White? I'm through...

How does anyone know we didn't make an offer to Detroit? Or Kansas City? Or Cincinnati? It takes two to tango. Maybe the Lions simply chose the Cowboys' offer over ours. Maybe they realized the Cowboys won't win more than 2-3 more games all year and their 1st rounder is going to be a top-10 pick. Or maybe we didn't do anything at all and Coach Reid likes the group he has, particularly with people getting healthy. We simply don't know and therefore criticizing is very, very short-sighted.

Wasn't Tony a half-back at PSU? Now Andy can concentrate on the Klecko experiment. PS: Why are we not trying to land Tony Gonzalez from Kansas City? At his age he is still better than anything we got and for only a third round draft choice. Then we can unload LJ and Schobel.

Keep a running back and not acquire a mediocre LB? - NEVER while AR is here! What would AR do with a running back? Oh that's right gain a foot when the ball is inside the 5 - NOT! I am sure D Mac would have loved to have Roy Williams and he would have fit in well with the organization since he has a reputation as a poor tipper - cheap is the word in Filly so Lurie should have loved him! Another year of disappointment. Hopefully before I die someone who really wants to win and will bring in a coach that has that mentality will own this team but I am 61 so time is running out on me as it did my dad! Beagles - that's all Lurie will ever give us - mutts from someone elses pound!

He knows that Loyal Eagles fans will show up all the time spend the MONEY and keep him very Happy!!. He knows that no matter what kind of product he puts on the field who Andy drafts or gives up in the draft bc he is too cheap to pay a first round draft pick.

Cowboys will implode. Owens was already on the verge of a meltdown regarding a lack of touches. How do you think he will react now? And 40-year-old Brad Johnson for the next 4-5 weeks? Come on people. Going out and stockpiling every big name player doesn't equate to a championship, i.e. the NY Giants of 2007. Stay positive. The Birds have the talent to get the job done. They just have to do it.

Terrible move! Tony Hunt was Penn State's all time rush leader, but didn't seem to get many chances to carry the ball for the Eagles. He is a solid power runner, which the Birds need desperately! But you won't get Andy to admit anything of the sort!
