The Eagles announced they have released defensive end Darren Howard and wide receiver Kevin Curtis.
Neither moves comes as a huge shock, because the expiration of the salary cap makes these moves feasible.
Curtis was due $4.5 million next season, more than $5.3 million in 2011 and more than $7 million in 2012.
Curtis signed as an unrestricted free agent in 2007 and caught 116 passes for 1,577 yards and eight touchdowns in 28 games. He missed most of this past season following knee surgery.
"Kevin is one of the classiest players I have ever been around. He's the type of player and person we like to build our team with," coach Andy Reid said. "We just feel good about the young core of receivers we have on our team at this point."
Howard joined the Eagles as an unrestricted free agent in 2006 and played in all 64 regular season games and six postseason contests. During his four-year tenure in Philadelphia, he registered 22.5 sacks among his 122 tackles.
Howard was due to make $4.5 million next season and in 2011. He was due a $4 million base plus a $4 million roster bonus in 2012.
"Darren Howard has been one of our most productive and versatile members of our defense in the last couple of years,” Reid said. “He is nothing but a solid player, leader and person on and off the field."

Anybody who thinks this a "youth movement" is being Naive. This is purely financial. All of these players who are being cut will be replaced by significantly cheaper players. People seem to forget, while there is no cap there is also no floor. This organization is showing it's true colors this offseason!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!- Well, if you do the math, assuming no huge deals (maybe Vick for a pick and one more FA) and no more old guy salary dumps (Juqua? Sheldon?), it looks like we have a pretty good sense already of what the roster will look like next season -- Offense: 3 QBs (McNabb, Kolb, Vick), 3 RBs (McCoy, Bell, Buckley), 1 FB (Weaver), 4 WRs (DJax, Maclin, Avant, Baskett), 2 TEs (Celek, Ingram), 9 OL (Peters, Herremans, Cole, J. Jackson, Andrews, Justice, Jean-Gilles, McGlynn, Dunlop), 1 K (Akers), 1 P (Rocca), 1 LS (Dorenbos). Defense: 4 DEs (Cole, Tapp, Parker, Abiamiri), 4 DTs (Patterson, Bunks, Laws, Dixon), 6 LBs (Bradley, Jordan, Gocong, Gaither, Mays, Fokou), 4 S (Mikell, Marlin, Macho, Demps), 4 CBs (Samuel, Sheldon, Hobbs, Hanson). That's 47, leaving exactly six spots for the six draftees they have coming. Of course, there will be a few variations -- injuries and undrafted FA's (always one or two) and maybe a second tier FA or two. But that's pretty much your 2010 Eagles, folks.— jmk1512

- Heard about these cuts for awhile -- westy, curtis, andrews, howard. Try reading something beyond what is written is philly and listening to someone other than philly radioguys. You were learn alot. Great Moves by the way -- dump bad players, dump bad salaries, get younger, and have money to resign djax, maclin, kobb, and mccoy. Eagles are like 10 moves ahead of everyone. - drfireman... the reason this can be done with the expiration of the salary cap is that they won't take a salary cap hit. It's basically the same reason they kept reggie brown last year and released baskett.— gbacine
- It's amazing how the reporters (I use the term loosely) in this town placate to the eagles FO and every move they make comes as no surprise, and everything they do is great. Since the season ended I have never heard anyone mention these players would be released (dump salary).— keepitreal1234

- They are looking at roster spots. Remember you can only bring 80 to training camp. There are going to be some good developmental football players not drafted at all this year. They would have kept Curtis otherwise, they didn't have to pay him anything until June 1ST. They need the spots for undrafted free agents. Thats the pro-football side of things. It also gives these guys a chance to catch on with another team. I am sure the Rams can use the help.— brickhead

Why would cutting the starting QB make who took this team to 5 conference championships you happy? looking for directions on changing the ol' user name. perhaps it was a short sighted choice to begin with. any help will be appreciated. Best wishes to Darren.- Curtis is superfluous with DJax, Maclin, Avant, and Baskett on board. They may be thinking that Abiamiri can become like D Howard. They're similar type players: tall, DE/DT hybrids. I think J Parker is the next old guy to go. McNabb will be the last old guy to go right around the draft. That will be such a happy. I want to see the Eagles get younger. This is awesome. To the future!— soulman386
