Eagles re-sign Cole
Daily News staff
The Eagles announced that they have re-signed guard/center Nick Cole to a 1-year contract. Cole was a restricted free agent.
Cole will make $1.545 million and will be a free agent in 2010 if no new agreement is reached before then. Cole and wideout Hank Baskett, the Birds’ two restricted free agents, were tendered at the so-called midlevel, which would require any other team making them an offer to give the Eagles a second-round draft pick if the Birds declined to match the offer. Baskett has not yet signed his tender but is expected to do so.
Because Cole and Baskett entered the NFL undrafted in 2006, the Eagles had to tender them at least at the midlevel to assure compensation if they signed elsewhere; low-tender compensation is a pick in the round in which the player was drafted.
Cole started the final four regular-season games and all three postseason games last season, replacing the injured Max Jean-Gillies, who was filling in for the injured Shawn Andrews. His strong play at the end of the year could make him a candidate for a starting job on the Eagles' reshuffled offensive line.
Cole, 24, has played in all 53 games at either guard, center or as a blocking back since he joined the Eagles as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2006.

He is a good player and I am happy they did it. People really need to be more patient. Mcosta1114
Mcosta, you're right. It often comes down to moves like this that make a bigger difference than signing "the big player". Cole stepped in and did a good job for us last season. Depth is important. dlscholt- Solid O-Lineman! albertpa

Hopefully Max-Jean is healing up nicely. Would love to see Max-Jean develop some more..... Cant Climb
Happy Days are here again! I lost so much sleep worry about this now all we need is a backup punter and then we will have the deepest team ever! Thank you Andy Reid for listening to the fans after we picketed for 6 months to get Nick "The Quick" Cole resigned. Nothing but the truth
Only 1 year? Lock him up long term! mikemaddog

I am so glad we keep signing players to one year deals. Maybe Reid and Joey Nickels can petition the league to allow teams to sign Draft picks for one year. That way we can always be under the cap and accumulate as many draft picks as possible. oharabri- Cole is a good backup. Not an everyday player. Good depth but that's all. Bob1
Some of these comments just go to show that the football intelligence of Philly fans is terribly overrated. First off Nick Cole, when he got his shot, outplayed Max Jean-Gilles last year. It wasn't even close. Max has the size, the strength and the footwork to play guard at a very high level in the National Football League except he has one fatal flaw: He plays way too high. If he doesn't fix this issue he will be like what Bob1 thinks Nick Cole is - a good backup not an everyday player. Well I agree, Nick Cole LOOKS like "a good backup. not an everyday player. Good depth but that's all" kind of guy Bob - but he doesn't play one. The kid is a player. The one year deals that we are seeing so much of has to do with the fact that 2010 is an uncapped year. Which means that you can sign players to long-term contracts and apply all of the bonus money in the year in which you signed the player thus circumventing the requirement to pro-rate the signing bonus over the life of the contract. Now, if the player's union and the Owners make a change to the collective bargaining agreement before 2010 turns into an uncapped year (and the players have plenty of incentive to do this since the rules shift even more out of their favor in a theoretical 2010 season - it's counter-intuitive I know to think that it wouldn't be good for the players to be in an uncapped league but it's why they say you need to read the fine print!) the Eagles can sign the players that they want under the terms of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Pretty brilliant if you ask me. All that said, I am just as frustrated as the next Eagles fan that hey haven't won a Super Bowl yet. I think this draft will tell us a lot about how the brain trust views this team. My confidence in them was shaken pretty badly last year (to this day I still don't understand why they didn't hand-off to Buck more). But in all seriousness, I am thankful to be an Eagles fan and not a Deadskins or Cowgirls fan... CV
