Runyan: Got Andrews News After Workout

POSTED: Thursday, September 10, 2009, 12:37 PM

It wasn't until after he worked out for the Eagles this morning that Jon Runyan learned his successor, Shawn Andrews, wasn't practicing, Runyan told your Eagletarian in a text reply. Runyan said the workout with coaches he played for from 2000 to 2008 "went well."

Runyan's agent, Ben Dogra, acknowledged the workout but said there have been no contract talks. It's unlikely the Eagles would want to sign and then play Runyan this week, with no practice, and if they signed him, they'd have to cut someone, from an offensive line corps that will play without Todd Herremans (foot) this week. Also, as a vested veteran, Runyan's entire base salary would be guaranteed once he played in Week 1. The team can cut a potentially less expensive deal next week.

Andrews watched the early part of practice, wearing his jersey without pads, then went back into the NovaCare Complex.

While the Eagles have not commented on Andrews today, the team's injury report lists Andrews as missing practice with a back injury. Andrews has struggled with his back since it tightened up in the fitness run on the first day of training camp. That followed surgery last season, after he played in only the first two games.

Asked about Andrews on Wednesday, Eagles coach Andy Reid said, “He seems to feel all right. That was the important thing and making sure his back was stable and that he was confident. That’s how he feels right now.”

Reporters' requests to speak with Reid following Thursday's practice were denied.

With Michael Vick on the exempt list, Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said a position player would be the third quarterback but declined to say who.Players joked it would be center Jamaal Jackson, which would be an acrobatic feat.

Mornhinweg also acknowledged that he has not gone into a season with as many untested parts as he has this season. The goal for the offense is to “get a little better each game,” he said.

Mornhinweg hinted that we shouldn’t expect rookies Jeremy Maclin and LeSean McCoy to have large roles right away. “He’s ready to help us a little bit, at least situationally,” Mornhinweg said of Maclin. With Brian Westbrook healthy, McCoy likely will have a role similar to what Correll Buckhalter did last season, he said.

As for the defense, coordinator Sean McDermott said rookie starting free safety Macho Harris is “a guy that’s battled all through the spring and training camp,” and is “a natural football player.”

BTW, Shady McCoy will not be switching his number from 29 to 25, after all. The league disallowed the switch, because there were already No. 29 McCoy jerseys being sold.

Yeah, when Jimmy Jackson left, all hope went with him! "If they are as bad as some are predicting . . ." Well, most prognosticators (those who make a living at predicting these things) have the Eagles either in the Super Bowl, in the NFC championship game, or in the playoffs, and most have them winning the division or finishing 2nd. The only people who think the Eagles are bad are all the people in the city of Philly. I keep begging you all to stay the F out of the Linc! Since 1960, the demented people of Philly have jinxed this franchise with their idiocy and their pessimism. There are Eagles fans throughout the country who actually appreciate this franchise and everything they've accomplished over the last 10 years, and we'd love to have the chance to buy tickets to see a team that you all so deeply despise! I started rooting for this team in 1979, when a 5'6" running back whose name is reflected in my screen name ran bonkers over every defense he faced. Thirty years, and this is BY FAR the proudest I've ever been to be an Eagles fan. At the start of every season, I know the Eagles have just as good a shot at winning a title as any other team. And except for the seasons when McNabb went down for long stretches, they have had a great shot to win it (which of course proves how bad he is at QB!). Quite frankly, anyone who hates what Andy Reid, Joe Banner, Jeff Lurie and Tom Heckert have done with this franchise should be forced to divulge themselves of their tickets, and should be forced to have a lobotomy. You don't deserve this team. And the players don't deserve such ingrates for fans!

8-8 boys, 8-8. We're going 8-8. Get used to it. This season is going to stink.

Put this fat rappin', mohawk boy on the next flight to Arkansas and cut off his cash flow. We'll see how bad he wants to play pro football. Runyun weathered and recovering has more heart than Andrews and his brother combined.

What I wish for Andrews. He leaves football, fathers children by various women. Goes through his savings on child support. Has to get a regular job when his brother refuses to help him out financially. Maybe then he will realize how he squandered a career. There are too many guys without his talent who would kill to be in his position. Guys who work hard at practice and training camp. Andrews spends his time making Youtube videos.

Buck was nothing special. A role player at best. This kid McCoy is going to be a player. It's perfect timing for him to come in now and learn from Westbrook.

If they're counting on Runyan to be a major contributor, then mail in the 8-8 record, and go do something else on Sundays.
