Eagles promote within defensive staff
Daily News staff
As expected, the Eagles have made two changes to new defensive coordinator Juan Castillo's staff from within, promoting Mike Caldwell to linebackers coach and Michael Zordich to secondary/safeties coach.
The likelihood is that the Eagles also will had a secondaries/cornerbacks coach to complete the staff.
Here is background on each, courtesy of the Eagles:
A former linebacker and special teams stalwart with the Eagles, Caldwell served as the team’s assistant linebackers coach in 2010. Caldwell initially joined the Eagles staff as a defensive quality control coach in 2008. As the team’s quality control coach, Caldwell also assisted with the linebacker and defensive line position groups. He served as an intern coach during the Eagles 2007 training camp, working with the linebackers.
Caldwell enjoyed an 11-year NFL career as a linebacker with Cleveland (1993-95), Baltimore (1996), Arizona (1997), Philadelphia (1998-2001), Chicago (2002), and Carolina (2003). He played in 159 career regular season games and posted 14.5 sacks and eight interceptions, while proving to be a top special teams performer. In fact, Caldwell was voted by his teammates as the Eagles special teams most valuable player in 1998.
A former hard-hitting safety with the Eagles, Zordich originally joined Philadelphia’s coaching staff as an intern in 2009 before being promoted to defensive quality control coach in 2010. Prior to joining the Eagles, Zordich had been hired by Youngstown State as a safeties coach early in 2009. He also worked as a defensive assistant at Cardinal Mooney HS in Youngstown from 2003-08.
A 9th round draft choice of the San Diego Chargers in 1986, Zordich played in 185 games for the New York Jets (1987-88), Phoenix Cardinals (1989-1993) and the Eagles (1994-98) and recorded 810 tackles, 20 interceptions, five sacks and four touchdowns.

What a joke!the green bay/chicago coaches we've been waiting on for the last month all passed on this job,why would they do a lateral move here? So our only choice is to promote our asst's with a total of 3 yrs experience!WTF!This is fat boy's last stand this year I thought he'd wanna go down swinging.Chuckie's on Lurie's sppeed dial! ohhh bc we all knew the safeties coaches before.. who cares! fman727
Looks like it's all up to Jim Washburn now, since everybody else on that side of the ball is a rookie.
Hey, that's a good question to look up. When was the last time a NFL franchise went into a season with only one defensive coach who had ever coached in their position before? jimmyj
...because the linebackers were coach so well, let's promote the asst coach. my goodness. djack10
Have question regarding Eagles many years ago. Eagles' fan since WW 2. Believe Eagles and Steelers were combined into one team for one or two seasons due to problems with wartime and players in military. Is this correct?? Eugene Bell
Did the janitor get promoted too? scootch
enough of the dawkins talk already! i loved him in his prime, too, but the guy spent much of the last 2 seasons injured, was not a force, and on a team that couldn't make the playoffs. eagles D may have been weak, but having an injury-prone, slowed safety out there would not have helped. plus, you'd all be complaining about how much money they wasted on dawkins instead of signing (fill in the blank). stopbooing- I can understand the promotions those guys put in the work... Both were previous starters in the league for a very long period...I guess it comes down to faith in the fat man... I think Andy is still the best chance to bring us the Super Bowl championship.
So the only real defensive coach we have that has any remote coaching experience is the DL coach, who'll be in his first year with the team. What a CF! beegal99
As much as i don't like it, I have to give them a chance. Andy is taking a risk that just might pay off for this team. Advertiser54
Time will tell. To me, it all feels like adjustments by a perpetual 10-6 franchise. With the exception of Washburn, who could be a different story. armchairGM
You assume that Dawk would like to work for an organization that dissed him and nickel and dimed him out of here...Why would he want to work for a football organization that has non football bean counters and their lackeys making football decisons....and for an owner that has not made a commitment to winning it all.... nuggett- Zordich looks like he belongs on a construction site
- The Tonner hopes these guys get a say in selecting players. It's obvious the accounting office of Banner and Roseman aren't getting the job done. The Tonner doesn't mean to leave out Reid, he's just not an accountant but he's no better talent evaluator than the Tonner. Players make plays, accountants make tax returns. Just how in the heck did accountants become two-thirds of the front office? Makes the Tonner want to puke.

is this yet a again a lesson in mediocrity? a o-line coach is promoted to the d-coord? did I miss something or is there actually a good reason for that other than the possibility of a short season and this is just the Eagles being cheap f*cks again and bringing in people who dont have a clue...i.e. mcdermott Atlas- Dawk as a coach, maybe. It was clearly a good move to let him go. The price was way too high. gho_matt
- So which of the 1/2 dozen FS were were worth their price that last few years for the Birds?

Joe "Nickles" Banner! pokerplayersunite
I would have liked to see them bring in a more experienced db coach to help Castillo, like Washburn for the line.....Zordich couldn't even get the top job at Cardinal Mooney HS! cannon00
Amen Daisy! Earl J
If Banner didn't have such a blimp sized ego he would have had Dawk on the field the last two years where his take no prisoners style was needed then have him ready to step in and lead the young secondary from the bench. daisy99
