Eagles looking to add tight end; ASPCA on Vick

POSTED: Saturday, August 22, 2009, 7:30 AM

The Eagles' search for another tight end is contiuning in the wake of Cornelius Ingram's season-ending knee injury.

The team evaluated Tony Curtis on Friday and could sign him pending a physical, according to Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network. The Eagles have made no official announcement.

Curtis has played in 36 career games with the Cowboys and recorded 11 catches for 50 yards and three touchdowns (all three game in 2007). Hehad eight receptions for 32 yards last season with the Cowboys.

He was an undrafted free agent in 2005 and had been with Dallas his entire career until joining the Chiefs this offseason after they traded Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta. He was released by Kansas City when Amani Toomer was signed.

Behind starter Brent Celek and veteran backup Matt Schobel, the Eagles have been working in undrafted free agents Eugene Bright, a converted defensive end from Purdue, and Rob Myers, from Utah State, who joined the team late in camp.

Celek, nursing a shoulder injury, did not play against the Colts on Thursday as a precaution. Schobel started and did not have a reception. Myers had four catches for 44 yards with a long of 17.

In other news, the ASPCA has broken its relative silence on the Michael Vick issue, releasing a statement yesterday that condemns "60 Minutes" for giving Vick a forum. The group says that Vick's PR team approached them about working with him but the APSCA turned Vick down.

Here is part of the statement released by Ed Sayres, the ASPCA president and CEO:

"Mr. Vick has indeed been given another chance to play football with the Philadelphia Eagles. It is important to state that the ASPCA is extremely disappointed that owner Jeff Lurie hired him for his team before it was clear that Mr. Vick has truly developed a sense of compassion for his victims, the animals whose lives were taken by him. The ASPCA believes in second chances -- in redemption -- but that second chance has to be earned through contrition, conversion to the cause of animal welfare and finally, through hard work. Mr. Vick has only now begun his journey toward a second chance. It will be a long and hard road for him, and while we wish him well, we also want to remind the nation that the work of ridding the nation of dog fighting is as compelling a story as one man's path to redemption. Let's not forget to focus on the animals, the crimes that are still being committed every day in the United States. What are we, as a nation, going to do about that? How are we going to express our outrage long past the first time Mr. Vick takes the field in Philadelphia?"

How is Vick supposed to show his remorse when PETA,ASPCA and Humane Society will not help him.He needs these organizations to teach and educate him on animal cruelty.

i share my bed with 3 dogs, so id say im a dog lover, animal lover. if u eat meat and have a problem with vick....i suggest going to the humane societies web site and see how that steak or burger ends up on your plate. those r peaceful animals. pit bulls r nasty! outlawed in many towns. the blood line shud be put down, becuase u cant control them. no way no how can u know for sure, even a family pit of 10 yrs, can just flip on day, with no warning and kill someone. man do the avg folk love to get spun that doesnt affect their lives. meanwhile in DC goldman sachs and jp morgan r taking the country over. the fed is ruining it, and no one cares.....well done. what a bigger problem? the federal reserve or vick droaning pits? oh i get it, looking at the fed wud take homework and intelligence. the vick thing, is just emotion and anger. something philly majors in!

It's funny how the APSPCA is "using" Vick as a platform in their statement to get out their message about ending dog fighting in America. No one was listening to the APSPCA's message or really cared about the issue before Vick, right? If the APSPCA truly cared about the issue, they would realize that Vick is their best chance to keep their message in the public spotlight, despite how much they dispise what he did. The fact that the APSPCA refuses to actually WORK with Vick to keep the issue in the public spotlight shows that the APSPCA is more focused on their own ANGER, and not their own MESSAGE.

APSCA, just like the rest of society talks a good game about redemption, why is so easy to be forgiven by CHrist and not by man, especially when man was given dominion over the animals not vice versa.

Wasn't it under the ASPCA's watch that hundreds of dogs were killed in PA just last year by a breeder? I'm sure a quick "donation" would have purchased their approval.

to a200xl: I don't recall hearing that Vick beat dead horses, but I did hear that he led a horse to water and tried to force it to drink.

Thank you Mosquito Killer... because I too am OUTRAGED at all of the "sport" animal killing and maiming that goes on freely and acceptably! Like you alluded to, sport fishing is flat out murder! And, all fishing is sport fishing because there are plenty of fish at the supermarket that have already been "fished". So, some sickos get a thrill out of hooking a fish in the mouth, then watching it squirm to death so that they can take a picture of their "trophy". How about those that hide in the woods for hours for the perfect arrow shot of a defensless deer. Very, very acceptable. Either the deer dies from the perfect shot through a vital organ or develops a horrible infection and is consumed through some other means. But, it's a "sport" so it's ACCEPTABLE!!! Any outrage over any of the Eagles or other athletes (or politicians)... who condone or openly support these "sports"??? So, philly 10... credibility begins when you boycott teams, sponsors, etc... for all these offenses towards animals. Not because of your, or the ASPCA's decision to single out Vick!

ooooooohhhhhhh, waaaaah, he killed some really violent and rabid dogs. So what, he ain't gonna be in your living room eating dinner with the family. Get over yourselves people. Why don't you worry about the human atrocities going on in the world. Does anyone care that there are refugee camps the size of Chicago in Africa? You are worried about dogs, give me a break.

mosquito killer, you have a good point. How come nobody says anything about Kevin Kolb or Trent Cole who are both avid hunters? I think this is even worse because the animals that are hunted don't even see it coming before they are killed with shotguns or high-powered rifles. Also, how about the fish that are hooked and then suffocated just to show how big it is and then thrown back in the water. People are such hypocrites!
