Eagles looking to add tight end; ASPCA on Vick

POSTED: Saturday, August 22, 2009, 7:30 AM

The Eagles' search for another tight end is contiuning in the wake of Cornelius Ingram's season-ending knee injury.

The team evaluated Tony Curtis on Friday and could sign him pending a physical, according to Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network. The Eagles have made no official announcement.

Curtis has played in 36 career games with the Cowboys and recorded 11 catches for 50 yards and three touchdowns (all three game in 2007). Hehad eight receptions for 32 yards last season with the Cowboys.

He was an undrafted free agent in 2005 and had been with Dallas his entire career until joining the Chiefs this offseason after they traded Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta. He was released by Kansas City when Amani Toomer was signed.

Behind starter Brent Celek and veteran backup Matt Schobel, the Eagles have been working in undrafted free agents Eugene Bright, a converted defensive end from Purdue, and Rob Myers, from Utah State, who joined the team late in camp.

Celek, nursing a shoulder injury, did not play against the Colts on Thursday as a precaution. Schobel started and did not have a reception. Myers had four catches for 44 yards with a long of 17.

In other news, the ASPCA has broken its relative silence on the Michael Vick issue, releasing a statement yesterday that condemns "60 Minutes" for giving Vick a forum. The group says that Vick's PR team approached them about working with him but the APSCA turned Vick down.

Here is part of the statement released by Ed Sayres, the ASPCA president and CEO:

"Mr. Vick has indeed been given another chance to play football with the Philadelphia Eagles. It is important to state that the ASPCA is extremely disappointed that owner Jeff Lurie hired him for his team before it was clear that Mr. Vick has truly developed a sense of compassion for his victims, the animals whose lives were taken by him. The ASPCA believes in second chances -- in redemption -- but that second chance has to be earned through contrition, conversion to the cause of animal welfare and finally, through hard work. Mr. Vick has only now begun his journey toward a second chance. It will be a long and hard road for him, and while we wish him well, we also want to remind the nation that the work of ridding the nation of dog fighting is as compelling a story as one man's path to redemption. Let's not forget to focus on the animals, the crimes that are still being committed every day in the United States. What are we, as a nation, going to do about that? How are we going to express our outrage long past the first time Mr. Vick takes the field in Philadelphia?"

I am an avid outdoorsman. I hunt deer, ducks, geese, turkeys etc. I also fish. Groups like the ASPCA make guys like me out to be mass murderers an awful people. These people in these groups should not get paid for such a job. If vick messes up again, cut him an jail him. Otherwise, mind your own chops ASPCA. YOU ARE A JOKE.

I contribute to the A.S.P.C.A. but I am not in step with their statement...they believe in redemption and second chances but these have to be earned..well how can you earn redemption if you are not given a chance. Michael Vick spent 2 years in jail..lost his fortune...apologized...what more can you ask. He did a horrible thing..he knows it...he has suffered the consequences....enough already. My goodness he has received more harsh reactions than that devil that blew up the plane over Lockerbie,Scotland who was just released from prison. He killed 290 plus innocent people and he spent 7 years in jail. Let's put things in perspective..I love animals...I have owned dogs and cats but somehow we have elevated animals to the same level as humans. Just think of it...290 people gone in a nano second because of a terrorist..he has never showed remorse..has never apologized...come on folks give Vick a chance. I am hoping he will shine through and become a valuable citizen and a great addition to the Eagles. Afterall he has Tony Dungy on his side and for me that is a most positive ally.

mosquito: I see the point you are trying to make, but your comment is just plain retarted. I believe Vick deserves a second chance, but how can you say that it was more humane to hang and electrocute dogs compared to fishing? Everyone is cognizant of the fact that mammals get killed every day for sport but you cannot compare that to the illegal and absolutely vile activities that Vick participated in. Not only that, but lets not forget that Vick was involved in illegal gambling and lied to the courts and The Roge. There is much more to this issue that just the killing of dogs. I am a life long Eagles fan, and unlike alot of people on this board I am not going to stop being a fan because they chose to sign a controversial player. The organization has done everything in its power to put together a winning team, which they are in the business of doing. Vick (just like the T.O's of the world) will be on a very short leash (no pun intended) and I have fully trust in the Eagles front office that if he becomes a distraction that he will be removed from the team. As a football fan I am excited and this season and to see what this team can do! Go EAGLES!!

Dear Unknown: Most of us engage in moral relativism when we talk about our collective treatment of animals in this country. Unwittingly or otherwise, through the food we eat, most of us traffic in the inhumane treatment of animals, and before people start bloviating from the moral high ground, they might do well to see what carcasses they stepped over to get there. I don't see much difference between electrocuting a dog and forcing a cow to be chained into a tiny pen a live in its own waste for most of its so-called life before it becomes a quarter-pounder with cheese or tonight's special at The Palm. 'S'all I'm sayin'.

I'm puzzled. It was my understanding that Vick was going to do outreach work in the Philadelphia community for the ASPCA. That the organization was going to utilize his high profile in local areas where dog fighting exists. What am I missing here??

I cannot believe the people here who try to justify the murder of innocent animals just because they are animals. Yes, fish suffer momentarily when they are caught. So do wild animals suffer when they are caught by their predators. A wild dog will hunt also to survive. We are after all CARNIVORES. But Vick did not hunt dogs for food. He used them in a barbaric way for amusement. That heinous amusement still goes on in the world. He was doing it as a child, which tells you how his mind and soul were warped at a tender age. You do not just reform a mentality like that by two years in jail followed by a millionaire's job. The ASPCA does not want its name linked with Vick's, but that does not stop him from seeking rehabilitation elsewhere. Contrition requires some form of restitution. I will not watch an Eagles game, or buy any of their products until he is gone. Bet he becomes a cheap trade before the season is half over.

AndrewfromBrooklyn - I'm with you pal, however while cows are treated quite poorly, the factory farmed pigs live a more horrific existence and it is they who are chained up in tiny pens. If one were to view the films made (surreptitiously!) in these factory farms, it would be quite natural to swear off all pork products. And yeah, there really is a lot of moral relativism going on here.

Mike Vick is an incredibly atheletic thug. He cares about nobody but himself. He keeps refering to his involvement in dog fighting as a mistake. It was no mistake. He has done NOTHING to show he is remorsefull for brutalizing dogs.

I never owned a dog but I do realize that in our country most people view dogs in a whole different class than many other animals. It is true that some animal rights people certainly are extreme in their views. But the abuse of dogs in our society is viewed as a serious activity. Vick has to expect to be viewed by a large number of people as a dangerous person. Psychological studies of criminals show that many of them have a pattern of animal abuse in their background. Therefore it is not surprising that no matter how many times Vick says he's sorry there is going to be many people skeptical of those statements.

thingfish: You hate animal lovers? I'm always leery about people who don't like dogs and other animals. There's something wrong with their heads. No sense of realty? The realty is I don't think you were raised very well. And to Elbarad. I can take my dogs and execute them anytime I want? People like you shouldn't be allowed to exist on this planet. All serial killers have been linked to animal abuse in their early years. That's a FACT!
