Eagles' defensive line coach out, too
Daily News staff
The changes in the Eagles' defensive staff continued, with defensive line coach Rory Segrest being fired, a team source confirmed.
He joins defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, who was let go late last week.
Segrest, 37, spent the last two years as the defensive line coach, and has been with the Eagles since 2005. He spent his first season as special teams quality control coach and assistant defensive line coach and then two seasons as special teams coordinator.
The move was first reported by CSNphilly.com.
The Eagles' defensive line has underachieved under Segrest, especially with a more veteran group compared to the linebackers and the secondary. Eagles D-linemen had seven sacks over the last six games and Trent Cole virtually disappeared toward the end of the season. The Eagles have three first-round picks on the line in tackles Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley, and rookie end Brandon Graham, the 13th overall pick in 2010, whose season ended with a knee injury.
Presumably, the Eagles will fill the defensive coordinator position first and he would likely have input in the staff. If Dick Jauron were to not get the coordinator spot and leave the organization, the Eagles also would have to find a new defensive backs coach.
The first player to weigh in on Segrest via Twitter was injured rookie Jeff Owens, who said simply, "That sucks."

- Now about that OFFENSIVE line coaching..............................
- If you had to fire either McDermott, of Seagrest....only one, or the other....Seagrest needed to be CANNED. road515
How about Mike Singletary? Billy
Wake me when they fire Andy Reid. Don Cornelius
Promote Jauron to def. coord. and bring in Singletary as the lb coach Frank-in-NJ- I vote for Dave Wannestadt or Dick Jauron. Hope it's one of those two. Defense in this league is usually run well by experienced guys.
Can we fire the entire defensive line? scootch
this team is soft, just like the coach. Its time to clean house and start over. franknbeans
talentless D, coachless D and fat andy just sits there as the main cause still working and getting a paycheck, embarrassing tooltime
To show you how utterly bad Jim Mora would be at DC, Mora has only been the DC for 5 years out of his career (and probably had a hand when he was a head coach of course).
From 1999-2003 The 49ers finished 30th, 28th, 9th, 18th, and 21st in total D.
From 2004-2006 while he was head coach, the Falcons finished 14th, 18th, and 15th.
So the only possible way we could get somebody more mediocre is if the Skins let Haslett go and the Eagles picked him up.
So knowing the Eagles, they will pick the guy who has NEVER had a successful D anywhere in his career, and expect that THIS time things will be different!

We need someone different to do the draft. 4thand10
Look at all these other coaches and organizations just flying past the Eagles and Andy Reid. Packers, Bears, Jets, Ravens, Saints. This entire year was a Michael Vick fluke. If some team had offered a 2nd round pick they would have moved him, Kolb would have been out for the year by week 6 with this O line and then we are 4 and 12. mick-of-the-moment
I'm glad Reid is turning things over. I like the message it sends. Those guys didn't have the chops for their position. The D was bad and the players, despite what everyone says, have better talent than the results. notch44
next: Patterson to the Seahawks for two salmon and a large starbucks latte. Rando
How does Andy Reid still have a job??? kimbarney
hard to not blame Segrest when both Babin and Clemons left the Eagles and had monster years. your_mom_says_hi!
At least he still has his hosting gig on American Idol jibberjabber
You knew this guy was fired when the Eagles removed the lawn chair outside The Linc that was saving his parking spot..... jibberjabber
How much actual teaching experience do these "Coaches" have? It's all nice and pretty to promote from within but it does't look like some of these guys have helped our draft picks get to the next level. fineedge1- To promote from within means to pay as little as possible. Eagles must take a look around the league and notice how other successful teams have brought in BIG names like Mike Martz in Chicago, Romeo Crennel in Kansas City, Dom Capers in Green Bay (the list goes on) to coach the defense. Interestingly, all mentioned Defensive Coordinators are ex NFL head coaches.
PhilMar - wait. just remember.. mike martz is an offensive coordinator, but still a big name in the nfl.

too funny. Another year of below average D-lineman, below average linebackers, below average safeties and its all the coaches fault right Andy?? Ohh,lets not forget the wonderful offensive line you built in the last 3 years Andy. I think Vick's rise was soemwhat overrated by a media starved to create stories but he did indeed cover up the overall stink of a bad/mediocre roster put together by a coach who insists that he doesn't need star players as long as his "system" is in place. Sewellmatt- Wow, imagine that. Two coaches whos first real coaching experience is in the NFL and they weren't sucessfull???? I love it, Reid is losing control and his little yes men are getting canned. Hopefully fatboy will start feeling the pressure and actually change some of his philosophies that are outdated!
Now if someone would just fire Reid, we'd get somewhere. greenflyer
Actually, Jeff Owens was misquoted on his Tweet.
He didn't say - "That sucks"
He said - "He sucks" betharu- It's about time!!!
- Whoever the new D-Line coach is please give him real talent!!!!!! shawnmac
- Bring back Tommy!!!
