Eagles add 3 rookie free agents

The Eagles have signed a fourth quarterback and two linebackers as rookie free agents.

Quarterback Cansey Hansen, who took part in the team’s minicamp last week, threw for 4,277 yards and 19 TDs during his 2-year career at Norfolk State. Hansen, 6-6, 220, led the MEAC in passing in 2006 with 2,166 yards.

Hansen has signed a 3-year contract with the Birds, although he likely will follow other fourth quarterbacks of recent vintage such as Andy Hall and Timmy Chang and just be around to help with the throws during the spring and summer. The Virginian Pilot has more background info on Hansen.

Linebacker Gary Butler (6-1, 235) had 69 tackles, 12 sacks, and four forced fumbles as a senior at California (Pa.).

Linebacker Mark Staffieri continues the Brigham Young connection with the Eagles. Staffieri (6-3, 232) had 54 tackles and one sack during his senior season and finished his 4-year career with 132 tackles and two sacks.

Eagles rookies are scheduled to report for a 3-day minicamp at the NovaCare Complex that begins next Tuesday.
