Eagles Look to Sharpen Focus

Eagles Look to Sharpen Focus

The film from what Andy Reid called that "ridiculous" performance in Indianapolis has been analyzed and digested. The Eagles are practicing for Thursday's preseason game against Jacksonville knowing they need to solve breakdowns "across the board, virtually every group, virtually ever position," offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said before Sunday afternoon's workout.

Suddenly, the Sept. 13 season opener is a concern. "We've got to do it fast," Mornhinweg said.

Defensive coordinator Sean McDermott referred to a "long list" of concerns. This week, McDermott said, "you want to see the 'ones' come out and start fast."

Special teams coordinator Ted Daisher said he feels his first-team return and coverage units are doing pretty well, the backups not so much. Rookie returner Jeremy Maclin has fumbled in both preseason games. Daisher said he has spoken to Maclin about this. "It's s huge concern, and we can't have it. I met with him yesterday and he's aware of it," Daisher said.

Right now, starting offensive linemen  Jason Peters and Stacy Andrews are scheduled to play against the Jaguars, which ought to make the o-line stronger. Tight end Brent Celek said he feels "as good as I think I can feel" and he should play as well.

We should have a better idea of whether Brian Westbrook will see some snaps after Westbrook's scheduled news conference Monday.

Mornhinweg said Michael Vick's status for Thursday is a "day-to-day deal," with Reid expected to announce whether Vick will play when Reid speaks to the media on Tuesday. Reading between the lines, it seems likely Vick will get a few reps in the first game he is eligible to play since being reinstated, but the Eagles certainly don't want Vick being the focus of what has become a very important week for the whole team. This is traditionally the preseason game in which the starters see the most action, and that is where the Birds want to place the emphasis.

BTW, the upshot from that business about a New York Post reporter seeing Vick allegedly having a drink at a hotel -- a report that inevitably found its way to the Pro Football Talk blog -- sources close to the situaton say  Vick is not prohibited by the terms of his probation from having a drink.
