Eagles Land Peters, Sign Him to 6-Year Deal

POSTED: Friday, April 17, 2009, 2:26 PM

UPDATED: The Eagles have confirmed a trade with Buffalo for left tackle Jason Peters and announced that they have signed him to a 6-year deal that will keep him with the Eagles through 2014. Terms were not immediately disclosed.

The Eagles sent the 28th overall pick and a fourth-round pick this year and a late-round pick in 2010.

“Jason Peters is the best left tackle in football,” coach Andy Reid said in a statement. “He is a powerful and athletic tackle and I have admired his play over the last few years on film. I have always believed that success in the National Football League is derived from the strong play of the offensive and defensive lines. This offseason we have added two young, top-flight offensive linemen in Jason and Stacy Andrews.”

Peters will meet the media at the NovaCare Complex at 11 a.m. Sunday.

From earlier:

The Eagles won’t be selecting a left tackle in the first round of the NFL draft next weekend. They got one Friday.

A club source confirmed that the Eagles have acquired Pro Bowl offensive tackle Jason Peters from the Buffalo Bills in exchange for the second of their two first-round picks (28th overall), a fourth-round pick and an undisclosed pick in next year’s draft.

According to the source, Peters is at the NovaCare Complex with his agent, Eugene Parker, working out the details of a new contract.

Peters had 2 years left on his old deal with the Bills and was scheduled to earn $3.4 million in base salary this season.

He had been trying to get a new contract with the Bills for more than a year now and held out of training camp last season. He was threatening to do the same this year if he didn’t get a new deal.

The Eagles still have 10 picks left in the draft, including their other first-round pick, the 21st overall. They are expected to focus on a running back with that pick.

Or, they could trade that pick to AZ for Boldin.... I mean, they do not like to use those first round picks anyway.

If you draft a big back, Westbrook can move to a third down receiver more and catch more screens, etc. Eagles need an RB not another hard - to - please WR ...

5isaKing....give it up...you're a broken record with all of the Westbrook hate. Can't you come up with anything else to say? Westbrook is the starter. The Eagles aren't drafting anyone to replace Westbrook this season. Whatever RB they draft will be a back-up for the near future.

This means no trade up to the top ten, and also means they will say no to moreno or pettrigrew, so the Question is fellas, which one would you rather have?????

All of the sudden the content to be mediocre, cheap Eagles have gone out and landed a Pro Bowl left tackle, the best right tackle in free agency, the best FB in free agency, and a very good, young, well-thought of safety. Man they sock. I'm a happy fan right now, a bit giddy. They have the ability to have a dominating offensive line.

great trade!! now gives the Birds one of the best O-lines in football, assuming everybody is healthy, both physically and mentally. get a RB with that other 1st round pick and this team is loaded on offense. although that's if Andy wants to run the ball more this year. i'm safely assuming that's the plan since they signed Leonard Weaver at FB, but you never know with Big Red. he's too in love with the pass.

No way the Eagles take an RB in the first round -- they seldom payoff in terms of contribution or length of career, you can do just as well in the 3rd round on. Big red will go line or secondary -- unless they do the Boldin deal.

Great pick up, and it is still possible to pick up Boldin, with a first and a 3rd, and still be able to pick up a RB in the 2nd round. We really do need a pro bowl receiver if we expect to advance to the super bowl. Besides a RB, all that is needed is one of the prospects for TE. I actually like Cook better than Pettigrew, but we would have to find someone to trade a lot of our lower picks to move up, b/c he won't be there past the second round...

"Baasically they traded Otah for Peters. Great pick up" Really??? Otah was half the reason the Panthers did so well last season. He sealed the deal on that side of the line for them. It remains to be seen if Peters will do the same for the Eagles.

Great addition. The O-line should be set for years to come. Can you imagine if the picked up Pettigrew? Adding a great blocker to a great line would be awesome. The Eagles are in a great place for the draft now because the 2 areas of real need are TE and RB which are probably the deepest areas of the draft. I hope Moreno or Pettigrew is picked up with that 21st pick but would be ok with picking the best on the board.

I think that Westbrook will be the complement. Westbrook is not an every down, carry the load, RB. He should play every down and be split out wide and create matchup problems. But he should not carry the ball more than 10 to 15 on average. The new guy should carry 15 to 25.

I'd be happy with a receiver that excells at catching poorly thrown balls. Seriously though, A RB in the first round, a bruising type would be a good addition.

They could trade No.21 and their 3rd rounder for Boldin, but I think getting Moreno makes more sense. If he is gone, trade out of first round for additonal second and third round pick. They have like four fifth round picks, so they can move up.

Yo Doctor Z.. I wouldnt consider that a trade off! The Eagles traded for a stud 2 time probowl left Tackle, as opposed to a Guard. A really good Tackle is much harder to find than a guard. The only thing otah has over Peters is his age. That is it! Eagles much better off getting Peters. How many guards do you see going in the first Rd? Let alone tackles with the first 15 picks.

Where are all the Andy Reid haters now? Maybe this move will teach the haters something. (I doubt it) The Eagles still can get a RB or TE. This is going to be a great offseason. Now if McNabb can finally play under pressure we can win it all.

Great Move, not draft a WR or RB. you can get a bunch of solid RB in round 2 though... and westbrook is still a beast, and now he will have an O-line and a FB who can block (leonard weaver via FA).

I like the move but we all must remember that the team needs playmakers to get to the super bowl and win it. That said, let's get a star WR, help at TE, and beef up the support for B-West. Once those players are on the team, the Eagles will fly to the promised land and the fans will have their parade!

our 28th pick & a 4th rounder, ONLY?! what a steal! do the iggles somehow have T.O. to thank for this gift...beens the bills probably tied up $ to sign him when they could of used it towards singing one of the premier O-lineman in the game. oh well, the bills can now say something the iggles never could say, "we have on of the top WR tandems in the league." and they can keep telling themselves that as they watch the iggles march through the playoffs... gthis trade isnt that good, they should have tried to get Fred Jackson from the bills as well, he is a competitve, excellent backup, and he coudl have gotten a modest new contract. I was hoping to get a WR, but who cares, the line is most important.

History shows #36 is likely to miss 1 or 2 games with injuries and will probably play 1 or 2 more at 75% because he's a gamer. The RB they draft will have to "replace" him in those games. He has to be a starting-caliber, Pro-Bowl-in-2-years RB. Who do the Eagles like? That's what I want to know.

This is a Very exciting move. You NEVER can get a two time pro bowler at 27 for this little man. Boldin would be nice but this guy is a STUD and a HUGE need. They will now be able to work on TE and HB which are the glaring needs at this time.
  • 0 like this / 0 don't   •   Posted 5:17 PM, 04/17/2009
I don't think the Eagles are going after Boldin now. If they do, then they have to work on a new contract with him. They already are working on a new contract with Peters. Also, McNabb wants a new contract. Too many negotiations. Very unlikely.

EAGLES FAN'S Here are some statics on Peters. In 2006 in 16 in games he gave up only 2 sacks. In 2007 in 15 games he gave up 9.5 sacks. In 2008 in 13 games he gave up 11.5 sacks. Combine that with Stacy Andrews 2008 statics of 9.5 sacks the Eagles OT's gave up 21 sacks last year. Peters has gotten worse every year since 2006. Sobering numbers to look at an digest. And I might add the defenses in the NFL East are way better than AFC East and AFC Central.

The trade last year did not get D Jackson. They traded the 2nd rounder to Minny in a swap of 2s and other picks. They took Trevor Laws with the Minny 2nd rounder. So you can say Otah for Peters and Laws, but not for Peters and D Jax.

Andy and Tom have NEVER drafted a rb in the first round, you people are watching too many of kiper's mock drafts. Moreno will be long gone. I dont see them taking Brown at 21. I dont think they view pettigrew as 21st pick material either. Trade for one of veteran wr's that are available (I'd take them in Edwards, Ocho, and Boldin order) draft ringer from michigan state in the 3rd. Remember how brazen he was with that statement when he first acquired the team? Never forget them. Laurie is a Billionaire thanks to you. The Eagles will always get close, but never close the deal. Get a running back with your 2nd rounder, WR with your 4rd, CB, DL, S, and LB with your 4 5th rounders, Place Kicker and Center with the 6th's and with the 7th someone to run to McDonalds for Big Macs for Fat Boy before each game.

Never ever has a 1st & 3RD round pick been given up for a "good" reciever who is nearing the end of his prime....the cardinals are looking for a sucker. Only starting caliber quarterbacks have been traded for a 1st and 3rd rounder...AND even steve young the hall of famer was traded for a 2nd and 4th rounder. Think. You no teams have to game plan around him. it was fitzgerald who teams had to shift their coverages for. get a clue people

All these people who want them to pick Moreno or Brown, have you ever even seen them play or are you just spouting off what you have read or heard? Beanie Wells is the best back in this draft. He is a FAST truck!!! He can catch, run, block, he does it all. I don't recall a UConn game being on tv i this area, and not too many Georgia games, so unless you saw those guys games on film, you have no clue. In any event, I don't even think the Eagles will take a rb in the first round. They will probably do something that no one expects, because they don't need to listen to the media. They know what they are doing. I wouldn't be suprised if they took a safety, cornerback, or TE if someone falls to them.

Oh and enough about Boldin. If they get him great. If not, oh well, someone else will play that position. All these fantasy football experts on here want him, and think that is the only way they can win. They have DeSean, Curtis, Baskett and Avant, which is not all that bad.

Westbrook had a tough year last year because of O-line..simple as that..Andy will not draft a running back in the first round unless moereno falls that far as running back is the second hardest postion to learn in west coast offense. Lorenzo Booker is better than you think and will contribute this year. Pettegrew is more likely as is percy harvin if he falls that far as he is the most versatale wr/rb/ath. Otherwise Andy will draft the best player available by their charts and address rb/wr in later rounds as there is depth there. I see him moving up in second round to grab Mack which I think would be the best move he could make. With Mack and Pettigrew we would have the best O-line in the NFL.

Eagles have led the league 5 yrs straight in most money left under the cap. With the 21st overall pick this year or using next years first rounder, get Boldin in now. Next years draft pick will be a 27+ selection if they make a legitimate run. Joe Banner's annual review is measured by fiscal responsibility. Every year the cap number makes me believe that Andy Reid has no real power in this organization. Read is now ten years into a 5 yr plan to win the superbowl. Success is measured by what, winning percentage in their eyes? The hypocrisy coming out of the NovaCare complex is delusional. were the bills successful for losing 4 Superbowls? 1-4 in NFC Championship games and 0 -1 in Superbowl is light weight. Get Boldin to compliment Westbrook and McNabb. If Tra Thomas was coming back, would we be doing high fives. Not really, Peters isnt going to score a TD, he will likely give up a few less sacks than Thomas. We need impact proven players.

awesome move but it is hard to get excited about a team that lets its HOFer and the utimate leader/team player walk.

This line is beginning to look like a top quality unit with at least 2 Pro Bowlers. Let's try for the entire line pursuing that achievement. Looks like right side to the brothers and the left side to the monsters. This should off set the NFC D-lines in the conference. One more DL in second round should help. Maybe these guys can help Justin find his bearings and grow! Good work!!

No, we haven't forgotten how they got Dawk on the cheap and then let him walk. I will not forget and as long as Reid is coaching, Joe is the bean counter and McNabb is Qb it won't matter what they do, they'll be nothing but bridesmaids.

For the analysts here: what players do the Birds have that could be traded on Sat.? Could any players be packaged to get more picks? Would Brown, Justice, AJ Feely,Glynn, or someone else bring anything? Does the League want any of these people or any others you can select? The down teams might want some to fill slots. Is that possible in this year's draft?

BREAKING NEWS!!!! No matter who else the Eagles sign or draft they will not win a Super Bowl with Fat Boy as coach. 10 years and he is still learning from this loss. As long as he is the coach and Banner is the money controller we are stuck with be teased every season. The fastest man on the Eagles is Lurie running to the bank every year because they NEVER spend all the money under the cap. In my opinion, and I'm a season ticket holder since 1971. This is Fat Boy's last chance to bring home a Super Bowl Win.
