Eagles confirm 9 undrafted free agents

POSTED: Tuesday, July 26, 2011, 12:35 AM

UPDATE, 10:30 a.m.

The Eagles have confirmed the signing of eight undrafted rookie free agents, with more to come. That group is WR Perry Baker, WR DeAndre Brown, RB Graig Cooper, P Chas Henry, QB Jerrod Johnson, DE Ced Thornton, WR Terrance Turner, TE Martell Webb and LB Brandon Peguese.

Five of the nine are listed below. Here is some quick info on the others:

* Baker, from Fairmont State in West Virginia, is 6-2 and a rail-thin, 167, according to his bio. He finished his career with 90 catches for 1,552 yards and 19 touchdowns, and also added 367 yards and three touchdowns rushing. He has been clocked at under 4.4 in the 40 and earned an invite to the East-West Shrine Game.

* Henry won the Ray Guy Award as the nation's best punter while at Florida. He punted 40 times for 1,892 yards (47.3 average) and 14 of his 34 punts (41.2 percent) went for 50 yards or more.

* Johnson is the career leader in passing and total offense at Texas A&M. After going undrafted in April, he was chosen first in the UFL draft. His college completion parcentage was .586 and he threw for 8,011 yards with 67 TDs and 27 interceptions.

* Peguese, from Hampton, transferred from South Florida to Hampton following his freshman season and went on to register 179 tackles and 18 sacks in three seasons.

 UPDATE, 9 a.m.

As we wait for the official opening of the NovaCare Complex, we will pass along reports of two more undrafted free agents linked to the Eagles. Again, nothing can happen here until 10 a.m., but players were allowed to start talking to teams as of 6 p.m. last night, despite some initial confusion.

The latest names added are Southern Miss wide receiver DeAndre Brown and Iowa wide receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos.

DJK, as he is known, is an interesting story. He is the all-time leading receiver in school history with 173 receptions for 2,616 yards. He probably would have been a mid-round pick in the draft, but was arrested on multiple drug charges last December. He was suspended for the team's bowl game.

The charges included marijuana, cocaine and perscription drugs. He eventually pled guilty to marijuana possession and the other charges were dropped. He was sentenced to a year of probation and fined.

Brown was reportedly a target of several teams, including New Orleans. He is big at nearly 6-6 and 240 pounds. He missed seven games last season, as a junior, with a leg injury, and then opted to enter the draft and forgo his senior year.

He finished second on the Southern Miss career charts in TD receptions (24), third in receiving yards (2,207) and fifth in catches (134) in basically 2 1/2 seasons.

EARLIER:

According to various reports, the Eagles have agreed to terms with at least four undrafted free agents.

Players cannot sign until 10 a.m. Tuesday. Initially teams were not allowed to talk to player Monday, but a decision was reached to allow contact beginning at 6 p.m.

As of tonight, the Eagles had only 61 players under contract, more than many teams but far below the new 90-man preseason roster limit.

Here is a brief rundown on the reported Eagles' signees:

* Graig Cooper, RB, Miami: Cooper wasa potent runner who probably would have been drafted were it not for a torn ACL in December 2009. He returned last season but rushed for 165 yards after leading the Hurricanes for his first three seasons.

* Cedric Thornton, DL, Southern Arkansas: Weight 309 pounds and stands 6-3. As a junior, he had 8.5 sacks and led the Division II school with 80 tackles. As a senior, he was third on the team with 52 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

*  Terrance Turner, WR, Indiana: Stands 6-3. Had 67 catches for 681 yards with three touchdowns.

* Martell Webb, TE, Michigan: Has size at 6-4, 268, but finished his college career with a total of nine passes for 111 yards.

*

Teams cannot release players until Thursday, but a number of former Eagles are finding out their dates.

The Denver Broncos will release running back Correll Buckhalter, a league source told the Denver Post.

The 32-year-old Buckhalter, who has had an injury plagued career, was set to make $1.92 million for the 2011 season. The Broncos have several younger options at the position and are expected to add via free agency.

The Seattle Seahawks will release offensive lineman Stacy Andrews, the Seattle Times is reporting. He started 12 games for the Seahawks after being acquired at the end of training camp in a trade with the Eagles.

Coming off knee surgery, Andrews signed a hefty free agent contract and was a disappointment in his only season with the Birds.

wow, that Stacey Andrews, what a pickup that was by Andy. Since his surgery he hasnt had one good season and Reid threw huge FA money at him thinking he would be a good starter for multiple seasons. Pathetic. Getting ACL patients will not win a SB. Assuming ACL patients will magically stay healthy and play well will not win a SB. Picking small fast players at every position will not win a SB. and throwing the ball more then EVERY COACH IN NFL HISTORY WILL NOT WIN A SB. EVER.

I personally like Webb the TE. He finished his college career with a total of nine catches for 111 yards. "Impressive!"

You people crack me up - these are undrafted free agent rookies and you're already bent out of shape. related, players can absolutely make an impact post ACL reconstruction, particularly in the 2nd year after the surgery. There are many cases where it doesn't work out, but there are many where it does, so why not take the chance on a low-risk player with some upside.

the team has to sign shirt stuffers to put on the field for practice...a few will surprise the coaches, but most will be cut a few weeks from now. The birds have a decent record finding undrafted talent, but at this point it's anyone's guess...

Every year, all these losers log on to make boooooring wisecracks about these UFAs. Does it make you feel more of a man? Does it help you forget your endless list of failures in life? Try posting something positive for a change. You'll find that it actually makes you feel better than spewing this garbage.

I positively think that JoeB and Howie are two non-football guys who should not be making player decisons.....Being an accountant and a fantasy football player does not qualify anyone to be a GM in the league......Being a freind of Jeffery is probably a nice thing but still does not qualify one to pick football players.....And I positively think that until Jeffery makes "winning it all" as the ONE and ONLY goal of this franchise it will never happen......PRIDE in being number one needs to replace his acceptance of just being happy to own a team.....The players give it all every week to WIN.....Now only if Jeffery felt the same way....

Eagles whiners are back. We get a win at a 60% clip, we get post season almost every year, be happy, only one team can win an SB a year, and there are 32 teams trying

Turner needs to look the ball into his hands, look at that pic. Maybe looking for Greg Lewis 2.0. But seriously, the Miami RB was a beast before his surgery, and RichRod doesn't throw to the TE. So maybe some upside.

it's hard having faith in a front office that gave stacy andrews that contract... i love all the eagles cheerleader commentors, who take the totally opposite approach of the haters, with blind faith towards the front office... but seriously, 9 catches for 111 yds?

Tight end from Michigan - I bet he can block. Maybe the Birds are thinking about running the ball. Oh but that would be a good thing, so it can't be true, right? All you experts know that all these guys are mistakes. The roster should be filled with nothing less than 90 future hall of famers. Anything less proves that Reid is incompetent, and Banner and Lurie are cheap.

The clueless haters crack me up.

typical eagles fans--jumping the gun without knowing what they are saying. Cooper is not "fresh off an ACL injury." He tore his ACL in 2009. Last I checked, it is 2011. And by the way, Cooper was a STUD at Miami. I really like this signing. Mark my words--we will be talking about what a steal this is come training camp.

What's with the whining? These guys are UNDRAFTED! They're longshots at best, mostly cannon fodder. Every now and then one overcomes an injury, or lack of experience, or poor workout times and becomes something. The only thing surprising about this group is no offensive linemen.

So, if i tear my ACL, there is a chance the Eagles might sign me?

Chad Henry has a great shot to make the team. Ray Guy Award, a chance to unseat Sav "Useless-Except-In-A-Dome" Rocca. Could have both a rookie K and rookie P.

Let's take a trip down memory lane: They did not take Pouncey last year and let Pittsburgh get a steal, they cut Babin last year, and this year they picked the old Canadien fireman and let the Bears take the best available o-lineman. No wonder we have no confidence in Andy and the front office to judge talent?

The ideal pickup for Joe and Andy would be an overweight Mormon with a rap sheet who tore up an ACL in the CFL.

wish we grabbed that LB from Boston College, lord knows we always need help at LB and why not try to get one that everyone thinks could be good regardless of his cancer, worth a shot since we rarely draft any up high

You armchair GMs crack me up with how little yuo know about how football works in this environment.Sorry the Eagles can't go out and sign All Pro Hall of Fame players from free agency, but there's a reason most of these players were not drafted, whether through injury or unachievement. As most common sense posters here were saying, they need bodies to have a traning camp, so if you can critcize the players they picked you can do better, but I guess most of you lazy fat out of shape whiny posers could not last 5 minutes out there!if what they have is so bad what would you suggest? Especially since EVERY TEAM is out there trying to sign undrafted free agents TODAY!! They are competing with 31 other teams to pick through the bottom of the barrel, like a Black Friday sale on Saturday!!The Philly fan is the biggest front runner in any sports city, J-Roll was absolutely right!!

Cooper the RB from Miami could be a steal. His last year numbers were not as much from the ACL problem he had, but more because of the crowded backfield at the U. He's quick and shifty. You'll see.

I'm surprised at the number of wide receivers. Aren't they competing for one spot, or maybe only a taxi squad spot? Chas Henry seems like the key signing. I know nothing about him, but those are impressive punting stats.

Terrence Turner, based on IU play, looks like a solid west coast receiver. If he is a special teams whiz, he could stick. If Webb is a 3rd tight end who is a special teams demon, we've needed one of those guys for quite some time. If the Eagles want to carry three tight ends, and he can block, run, and tackle, his only receiving skill that matters may be the ability to grab a short pass in the end zone, a la Mike Bartrum.

The Baker kid is phenominal, almost super-human on the football field. His quickness is amazing and he does KO returns and Special teams. What a catch for the Eagles.

Stupid Eagles! We need a big physical reciever, not some 6'6" 240 lightweight! And we don't need a 268 pound blocking TE or highly productive RBs! We need to fire Andy Reid, and go back to the Glory Days when Mike McCormick, Dick Vermeil, Marion Campbell, Buddy Ryan, Rich Kotite, Ray Rhodes were leading us to playoff wins every year.

If Buddy Ryan was coaching, we'd have won nine Super Bowls! He knew how to get good players! Wish we had Michael Haddix and Junior Tautalatasi back!

I'm as critical as anyone of this FO, but you people realize they can't sign "real" free agents yet, right? The punter will probably make the team, but the rest are camp bodies, and if one of them turns out to be decent, that's great.

Let's wait until they can start signing other teams' FAs and they do nothing before we break out the pitchforks.
    Only in Philly...

Iowa fan here. It's a good gamble on DJK. Big fan of him. Too bad he got busted right before his last game. He was in and out of Kirk Ferentz' dog house often but he never got suspended or arrested until right before his last game. He hung out with a dealer (roommate). He has a Michael Oher type of story. A white couple took him in when he was in middle school or HS. He deserves a second chance. The boy is a player. He'll move the chain and can block as a WR.
