Eagles don't deny offer of first-rounder for Kolb

POSTED: Monday, March 21, 2011, 8:51 AM

NEW ORLEANS --- Eagles coach Andy Reid seemed to unofficially open the bidding for quarterback Kevin Kolb last week in remarks to the team's Web site, and he confirmed to the Daily News this weekend that teams are calling with offers.

Of course, nothing can happen until there is a new collective bargaining agreement or a court injunction forces the NFL to reopen for business.

"We'll just see" if the league is still locked down at draft time, Reid told the Daily News yesterday. "We're just sitting back taking calls. Quite a few people are calling."

One of those calls appears to have been a team willing to give the Eagles a first-round pick for Kolb, according to Sports Illustrated's Peter King. Citing a "good source," King said the Eagles are now looking to see if a team with a higher draft choice in the first round is willing to make a "better deal." He did not identify the team that made the initial offer.

Asked this morning about King's report, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, in New Orleans for the NFL meetings, did not deny it. He didn't exactly confirm it, either, but he definitely didn't deny it.

"There's a lot of interest in Kevin Kolb," Roseman said.

Could the Eagles come to a wink-and-nod agreement, pending resolution of the CBA dispute?

"You can have trade discussions, but until the CBA is done, you cannot complete a trade," Roseman said.

Roseman did not wink or nod while saying that, but he smiled enigmatically.

One of the possible scenarios that has been discussed is that if the players get an injunction against the lockout, the league would have to impose rules and reopen operations, while appealing. Then if the owners won their appeal, the league would shut down again. But one would think you could trade a QB for a draft pick or picks during this window of opportunity, if you had the deal already lined up and ready to go. Which, of course, they could never admit doing. (Insert your own wink/nod here.)

Bear in mind, we don't know for sure someone has offered a first-rounder. The way these things work, it behooves the team trying to create a market to leak the idea that some anonymous team is ready to meet its price. Other suitors are less likely to lowball, unless they are confident the report is false.

But a number of NFL people believe Kolb represents solid value in a draft year when the only slam-dunk NFL-ready star QB, Stanford's Andrew Luck, decided to stay in college.

Writes King: "I'd trade a very high draft pick to acquire Kolb instead of drafting one of the quarterbacks available this year. I'd want to reduce the risk of making a mistake high in the draft by taking the safe guy with ability? Kolb's 26. He's a coach's son. He's had some struggles running the Eagles offense in his seven career starts, but I saw him ruin the soon-to-be Super Bowl champion Saints with a 391-yard strafing in 2009; he played well enough to rout the playoff-bound Falcons and throw for 326 yards last season. We've seen him do it. All the rookies have question marks. I know I'd sleep better at night with Kolb on my team this summer."

The picks could be announced as soon as next week. The NFL has said the full regular season schedule will be not announced nexth month as usual. It is unclear if a separate announcement will be made for the marquee games and opening weekend.

* The vote on proposed rule changes will be tomorrow.

* Also, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will address the media, rather than today as scheduled. Lead negotiator Jeff Pash will talk to the media today at 2 p.m.

I don't get it. If the players are locked out, that means the owners are stopping the season. Open the doors and keep negotiations ongoing. Make all decisions retroactive or have them start when the agreement is reached. A strike is when the union doesn't show up. A LOCKOUT is when the OWNERS SHUT THE LEAGUE DOWN. Players if they are able and ready to play should still be paid. The owners are still getting paid by the networks. If they had to pay the players who have valid contracts and want to play, then there will be a season. Just the uber rich making a power play supported by all the lemmings who can't see the forest for the trees.

according to ESPN, they think the team that offered the 1st rounder is Seattle (25th overall). That won't cut it in Eagle-land though, but I am sure the Eagles will land a top-10 for him.

Best choice is to trade Vick and get two first rounders. Kolb is the long-range guy for this team. Vick, while better, is likely to be on IR next December. Vick will be worth little next spring in the trade market.

and when they get a first rounder for him whos the idiot? its not that hard to see that happening at all. And now look at how that 2nd round pick looks, not so bad eh. I also find it funny that people will blame reid for kolbs poor play at times, the only reason any of the eagle qbs including AJ feely have done well and made coin later on was because of Reids system, not their skills, the system made McNabb. Now other coaching issues with Reid are a whole different story

I would hate to see Kevin Kolb leave. But, he do need to start over somewhere else. Vick is the near future for the next, at least, 5 years. Kolb can't wait that long. I wish him the best and hope that he don't come back and hurt the Eagles!

I believe the truth is that teams would offer you more for Kevin Kolb than Michael Vick. Nobody wanted Vick when he came back into the league and there is no indications that any teams hve offered much for Vick after he has been starting. So for all you who want to call Kolb silly names, realize that the GM's in this league believe Kolb is a better quaterback than Vick.

i think is more like the GM's in the league realize that nobody would trade a probowl starting qb who just had his best season. lets not forget, son, vick had the 4th best qb rating in the nfl. GM's would be wasting their breath asking about vick. you're not too bright i see, Dr.

If I had to guess on which team offered a latter 1st round pick to the Eagles for Kolb, my bet would be Seattle who has pick 25. Hasselbeck may not be back for them and Charlie Whitehurst is a disaster. The Eagles are in a great position to field higher offers for Kolb with already having a first rounder offered to them. Teams I could see stepping up for Kolb are Arizona, Minnesota and possibly Cincinnati. A dream scenario for us would be Arizona giving us pick 5 for Kolb and for us to take CB Patrick Peterson. Then with our pick at 23 going for either OT Gabe Carimi or RG Mike Pouncey.

They will get a first round pick for Kolb, which they will then trade for two third round picks in 2016...

The 2009 Saints' defense was ok, nothing more.

DO IT!! get what u can.
i liked Kolb in college, but in the pro's he's too inconsistent and already has one concussion from hardly being hit. MANY teams need a QB. BUT make sure to draft or get someone in who can play behind Vick. he prob. won't play all season.

Kevin is an okay QB but unless the deal includes us getting some stud offinsive lineman who are able to protect Michael we are going to need someone......and if Andy and Howie pull the trigger and Michael goes down.....and so do we...then this may be Andy's last year and Howie has been over-rated as a football guy

Peter King would trade a first round pick for a Grande Triple Hazelnut Latte. His opinion is less than useless.

Yeah, who would want a guy who set NFL records in his 1st 2 starts? Dopes.
