Eagles-Raiders report card

POSTED: Sunday, October 18, 2009, 9:10 PM

Paul Domowitch’s report card on the Eagles-Raiders game:

RUSHING OFFENSE: Passaholic Andy Reid fell off the wagon and called just 11 run plays for Brian Westbrook and LeSean McCoy. Westbrook had 25- and 9-yard runs on the Eagles’ first possession of the second half, then carried the ball just two more times the rest of the game. Grade: D

PASSING OFFENSE: A week after completing 76.2 percent of his passes against the Bucs, Donovan McNabb completed just 22 of 46 passes against the Raiders. The offensive line had no clue how to deal with the Raiders’ blitzes and stunts, the receivers dropped passes and McNabb didn’t make plays when he had opportunities.
Grade: F

RUN DEFENSE: The Raiders only averaged 3.3 yards per carry, but were effective enough running the ball with Justin Fargas to force the Eagles to stay in their base defense more than they would have liked. Grade: C

PASS DEFENSE: The Eagles gave up 224 passing yards to a guy who hadn’t thrown for more than 128 since Week 1. The Raiders took advantage of middle linebacker Jeremiah Trotter’s lack of speed on Zach Miller’s 86-yard touchdown catch-and-run late in the first quarter. Miller became the latest tight end to feast on the Eagles’ defense.
Grade: F

SPECIAL TEAMS: David Akers missed costly 43- and 47-yard field goals that would have changed the outcome of the game. Eagles didn’t get much out of their return game. Grade: D

OVERALL: When Andy Reid said he was outcoached, he was spot on. He and his staff were completely caught by surprise by the blitzes and stunts and coverages the Raiders threw at Donovan McNabb and company. McNabb was sacked a disgraceful six times by a defense that managed just nine in their first five games. Grade: F

Can't blame McNabb. Getting him out of his game was Oakland's goal, and it reached it, definitively. The problem is that Andy and Marty and Sean were completely outcoached. Not just in the initial game plan, but, equally significantly, in being unable to adjust during the game. This was never, from the first quarter on, going to be a day for a straight passing game, but Andy and company never adjusted. Just wait till the Giants, Falcons, Bears, and Cowboys get a look at this film. Especially the shots of Trotter trailing forlornly after tight ends and fullbacks running for touchdowns and first downs. Oh, well. Its just one game.

Only 2 game highlights: 1) Al Davis seemingly sitting on a handicapped toilet the entire game and 2) the pigeon playing on the Raider kickoff squad.

This is bad. There are no excuses. People need to lose their jobs. People need to be benched. This was an outright clusterf*.

Anyone who remained a fan after they signed the garbage pail Vick deserves to suffer. Ha, lets hope this is just one of many loses over the next 10 years of mediocrity!!!

McNabb is generally better than this, but I think his time in Philly needs to come to an end. He doesn't seem to be able to step up and drive the team to a win when the game is on the line. Sure there were some drops, but also a lot of bad throws. He needs to move on, and so do the Eagles. Give the ball to Kolb.

You want to beat the Eagles ?? Easy.. Blitz... Because they have NO running game. Until they have a " go-to" running attack to keep the opposing D honest, they are wanna be's.Or fraud's putting on a 3 and out aerial show, which even the Raiders can figure out how to shut down..Pathetic. It's either that simple or the Bookies asked them to throw a game and this is as good as any to lose...

That was the worst I have seen them play in years. Cunningham was better. Come on against the Raider, the raiders not new england or the saints but the raiders. I don't think McNabb is health yet, if he were he wouldn't let the happen to the city. Come one.... At least put Vick in let him do something other that running in the wildcat.... WE WANT VICK... WE WANT VICK... WE WANT TO WIN.

Master Strategist Andy Reid with another example of his inability to adjust in the game. So the raiders defense is blitzing more often than you thought and getting pressure on your QB, What do you do Andy? Most coaches would run the ball, throw some screens, throw quick passes so your QB can get rid of the ball. Not Andy, he just keeps firing...like he did last year against the Bengals passing 55 times against a team that is 28th against the rush. How many times is it the same thing over and over with this guy. His 11 year track record shows that he elevated the Eagles franchise and deserves credit for his record and 100 plus wins, however if you think Reid will win a big game...your cheese has slid right off the cracker. Give the Broncos credit for letting go of a coach in Shanahan (who has won Super Bowls) and bringing in McDaniels. There are plenty of good coaches out there. Why can't Eagles management see that Reid has plateaued...he will never win a super bowl here or anywhere else. Nothing personal AR...but a pass always offense is too predictable, buts too much on the QB. Donovan is pretty good and the team would be much better with a running game...however Andy would rather work with his wildcat. I would have fired Reid after he punted in the New Orleans playoff game. If you think that's harsh...well let's see...Gruden, Billick, Coughlin, Tomlin and Dungy won Super Bowls with less trys. Andy's clubs have been favored often and come up small. Reid needs to go. It's like a company with an entrepreneur taking them so far and they need to bring in someone else to get them over the top. As bad as the Eagles played today, some adjustments by the coaches could have changed the outcome.
