Eagles, Phillies top GQ list of 'Worst Fans in America'
Daily News staff
Well, here we go again. Another national survey, another shot at Philadelphia sports fans.
GQ is the latest, and yes, the tired refrain of booing Santa Claus is mentioned. And as usual, the methodology is suspect, and there are tons of stereotypes. Maybe image is everything.
The Worst Fans in America list has Eagles fans and Phillies fans tied at the top. Our town is dubbed home of the "Meanest Fans in America."
Here is what the magazine says about Eagles and Phillies fans, and this saves you the time of flipping through the slides, and maybe even takes some web traffic away from GQ.
Over the years, Philadelphia fans have booed Santa Claus, their own star players, and most absurdly, the recipient of America's very first hand transplant, whose crime was dribbling in a ceremonial first pitch—thrown with his freshly transplanted hand. Boooo! Admittedly, there are some things fans have cheered. Like Michael Irvin's career-endi ng neck injury and a fan being tased on the outfield grass. Things reached their nadir last season, when Citizens Bank Park played host to arguably the most heinous incident in the history of sports: A drunken fan intentionally vomited on an 11-year-old girl. The truth is this: All told, Philadelphia stadiums house the most monstrous collection of humanity outside of the federal penal system. "Some of these people would boo the crack in the Liberty Bell," baseball legend Pete Rose once said. More likely, these savages would have thrown the battery that cracked it.
Here is the Top 10.
1. Philadelphia Eagles
tie.. Philadelphia Phillies
3. West Virginia Mountaineers
4. Oakland Raiders
5. Maryland Terps basketball
6. Boston Red Sox

- they're also to blame for the thinking that women who resemble 12-year-old boys are sexy.

....most knowledgeable fans also! dogman5- Most inebriated. brio
Perhaps they should interview Cliff Lee, or read the transcript of his press conference when he signed with the Phillies - a second time. bobk
Call it what it is. Bigotry. Bad fans are everywhere, but the NY-LA based sports media loves calling attention to every minor incident in Philly. It's because they expect Philly fans to be small market, as if we belong with Detroit and Cleveland, but we know we can put New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Boston to shame. Pelti
"Worst Sports fans" implies least supportive, least knowledgable, etc. This is basically a list of teams whose fans have had the most notorious incidents. I actually like it. If articles like this keep even one opposing team's fan away for fear of their life then these articles are good things. guyguy4
Over the decades that I have followed Philly sports, since 1947, I find the fans smart, enthusiastic and rooting with their hearts, souls, spirits almost to pain. Sure some of them are inane and jerks. But, go to LA, go to Oakland, see behavior and sanity and intellect from passive fans to pagans. And remember, the Phils have lost over 10,000 games, the most in pro sports and still, still the fans LOVE THEM. I DO . And I am 72 and a retired pastor and college prof. Like most of the MSM, polls, and commentaries have a real agenda and frankly, as with liberals in politics, I could care less what so called experts on either fandom or patriotism and America that those types produce. I love Philly sports and I do not hurt, throw brick bracks at anyone else . But kidding????? Why not??? LOL Koons
Yeah, that makes sense. The kid who barfed on an 11yo girl, the two idiots who ran onto CBP field, and tha parent(s) who let the kid suck on an empty beer bottle...those 4 or 5 out of over THREE MILLION fans who attended Phillies game last season make us the worst? Attendance records each season, marquee players taking less money to come BACK? We're not the Braves or SF Giants, with fans who appear only in late Sept. We are ALL YEAR. Give that GQ guy tix to a Flyers playoff game, maybe Gm6 or 7 in the conference finals, to see how awesome our fans are. deanm828- But, this is always what happens when some third rate "writer" working for a fourth rate rag needs to churn out a few pages. Quick, a stereotype into the mix. Of course there are a few bums, but for the most the Philly fans are actually pretty decent. The point as to the first MLB team to 10,000 in the L column is valid, and don't forget that between 1932 and 1955, Philadelphia had TWO really HORRIBLE MLB teams! The Birds are working on more than a half century of not winning it. The Flyers are past a third of a century since winning it, and the Sixers are past a quarter century. Moreover, Penn State did the stupidity of going into the Big Whatsis as a genuine national power it football but is really nothing more than an also ran since that stupidity! Frankly, guys, for the way few and very far between jerk of the stands, Philadelphia does pretty darn well as a group of sports fans who show up, cheer, boo, applaud and whatever else it is and then go home after the game.

I saw the Phillies play the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium in 2008, and let's just say the fans were not so receptive to someone rooting for the other team. Had lots of things thrown at me, but the kicker was seeing a dad with his young son (probably like 12 years old) in Phillies gear, and the son getting smashed in the face with a full cup of soda. But we don't hear about that on national TV. If this happened in Philly it would have been like a Charlie Sheen story. vvvmetallicavvv
At some point in their life, the author must have gotten his a** kicked in the local area while his girlfriend watched and sobbed.
