Eagles-Packers report card

POSTED: Sunday, September 12, 2010, 9:23 PM

Here are Paul Domowitch's grades for the Eagles-Packers game. This season, you get to make the grades too. Click here to cast your votes. We will print the results in Tuesday's Daily News.

RUSH OFFENSE
If your idea of a ground game is your quarterback taking off and running, then the Eagles were terrific. Mike Vick rushed for 103 yards on 11 scampers, though the one time he should have run — on a third-and-goal from the 5 with 6 minutes left — he foolishly decided to throw. The running backs – LeSean McCoy and Leonard Weaver – combined for just eight carries, though McCoy had a nice, 12-yard scoring run.
Grade: C-minus

PASS OFFENSE
At halftime, center Mike McGlynn actually had more receptions – one – than wide receiver DeSean Jackson and tight end Brent Celek. Jackson and Celek finished with a combined six catches for 62 yards. Kevin Kolb completed five of 10 passes for 24 yards and should have had three interception before he left the game with a concussion. Mike Vick did much better, completing 16 of 24 passes. Grade: C

RUN DEFENSE
The Eagles held the Packers to 66 yards on 14 carries in the first half. But the loss of middle linebacker Stewart Bradley took its toll in the second half, and particularly in the third quarter, when the Pack averaged 5.7 yards per carry. RBs Ryan Grant and Brandon Jackson combined for 108 yards on 26 carries. Grade: C-plus

PASS DEFENSE
The Eagles sacked Aaron Rodgers three times, intercepted him twice and held him to 6.06 yards per attempt. They also neutralized dangerous TE Jermichael Finley, holding him to four catches for 47 yards. But they gave up a 32-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings late in the third quarter that ended up being the game-winning points.
Grade: B

SPECIAL TEAMS
Bobby April’s kickoff-coverage unit was atrocious, giving up costly 51-, 40- and 28-yard returns right after second-half scores. Punter Sav Rocca had a great day, averaging 49.6 yards a punt. He had two 57-yarders. PR DeSean Jackson and KR Ellis Hobbs were non-factors. Grade: C-minus

OVERALL
Mike Vick was able to create problems for the Packers’ defense with his legs, but that’s not a long-term answer for offensive prosperity. The Eagles’ passing game, with the exception of a couple of effective screens, was lousy. The defense played much better. They got pressure on Aaron Rodgers with a four-man rush, but got hurt by the run after Stewart Bradley went out. Grade: C

Andy Reid has been one of the best coaches in Eagles history, in some ways. Look at his record. But his management skills undermine his players and his team. The time outs today were bizarre at best and inexplicable. The shuffling of quarterbacks counterproductive. His searching for speed without regard for toughness is his most egregious error however. We got beat up today, and will do so against other bigger, stronger, tougher teams. How many people did we lose today? That's the trend lately and it will continue till he leaves. It's time to thank Andy Reid for what he has done in the past, and to wish him well -- elsewhere.

Vick goes from shotgun to a QB sneak ? no shotgun rollout ? no 3 TE one back set for 1 yard ?? No running game ??

What's funny is that probably half of you wanted the Eagles to get rid of McNabb and now that he's gone now you all want to dog the Eagles about starting Kolb. Guess what guys when a QB starts the season for the first time it's not easy. He's going to need at least one full season at QB before we can even begin to talk about how good or bad he is going to be! Give it time. This is what everyone wanted so everyone needs to chill the F@*! Out!!! As for me I'm still an Eagles fan and I'm pulling for McNabb unless he's playing against the Eagles.

The 4th down call should drop a letter grade alone...

Kevin Kolb is not ready for primetime! I knew he was a bad, but not this bad. But for all of you that wanted to run Mcnabb out of town--well this what you wanted. And don't you dare try saying "it's just one game" or "the Packer's defense is really good." It is not the exception, but the rule that if Kolb remains as the starter, we Eagles fans are headed for a lot of sad afternoons and evenings. He will probably average three interceptions a game and have double INTs/TDs by the end of the season. So, be thankful we have a former all-pro quarterback that many of you wanted to run out of town as well. I know Reid is not smart enough to recognize all this and will insist of starting Kolb because he totally wasted a 2nd round pick on him. Nevertheless, Reid will be digging his own grave because now with Mcnabb gone, he doesn't have anyone to blame for his ineptitude as a head coach and maybe he'll be the next one heading out of town.

Vick should be the QB plain and simple...you can hate him or whatever...just watch the tape. Kolb = Hoying

I'd like to hear from everybody who claimed Kolb is a better QB than McNabb.

A c grade? As is usually the case when facing better coaches, Andy got schooled and the game was never really that close. Don't ever expect to see a championship under Reid, he's a poor GM, a worse coach and not half as smart as he think's he is. Sure, it was easy to beat the NFC when the Giants, Redskins and Cowboys were coached by morons, but that not quite the case anymore. Its easy to blame McNabb for things, but remember Andy picked him, now we're supposed to trust his judgement again? He should be embarrassed.

you're gonna tell me that we have a play calling card the size of a doormat with supposedly 200 new more plays, two of the fastest players on the field in vick and d jax, no fullback, 9 packers at the line of scrimmage, no timeouts and andy/marty draw up a SHOTGUN play for a QB DRAW UP THE MIDDLE??????? SERIOUSLY??? for a 12 year coach do that is absolutely INEXCUSEABLE..typical andy "i'm smarter than all of you" coaching...people its ground hog day all over again except we're 4 starters down after one game and dont NEARLY have the talent as we had the past 8-10 years....FACT...oh and Paul, how in the world can you give the special teams a C-minus? the punt returns were atrocious and Rocca punting well and Akers performance save their F score to a D-minus...C-minus?? WAAAAAY too generous.....

Domo, Is Banner buying lunch again? You call special teams "atrocious" and grade them a C-minus??? Grow a pair, and become a journalist. Pathetic. That was the worst coached and prepared team I 've seen in years...
