Eagles: Not Hiring Defensive Consultant

POSTED: Tuesday, October 11, 2011, 11:24 AM
The Eagles denied a report that they would hire a defensive consultant for Juan Castillo. (Clem Murray/Staff file photo)

An Eagles spokesman today said the team is not hiring a defensive consultant. The spokesman was responding to a report by ESPN's Chris Mortensen last night, which said Eagles coach Andy Reid had discussed with management bringing in some help for new defensive corrdinator Juan Castillo during the bye week next week.

Today on ESPN.com, a version of Mortensen's report notes the Eagles' denial and points out that the team is denying it will make the move, not that the move was considered.

Of course, at 1-4, with the defense in tatters, it isn't hard to believe the Eagles would consider anything. Or that they might change their mind about help for Castillo during the bye week, if they drop to 1-5 after playing the Redskins.

A number of readers have answered my request for e-mails explaining how in the world the Eagles can be leading the NFL in rushing even though it's their opponents who tend to land the devastating run-game blows.

Best summation is from a guy who identified himself only as "John."

"The Eagles lead the league in rushing yards because of Vick's running ability, like that 50 plus yard scamper on Sunday. it's an illusion though, just like when the Falcons did the same with Vick at the helm. don't misinterpret it. it doesn't mean they can run when they have to and it certainly doesn't mean they play physical football like most teams that lead the league in rushing do.  That said, a minimum of fifteen carries for shady five for Brown and a couple here and there for Lewis should be mandatory."

Yet, just another example of Reid being stubborn and instead of fixing it, he figures if he ignores it long enogh something is bound to go right. By the time he realizes that there is a problem and he doesn't have the people internally they are two other holes opening up.

This is exactly why the Eagles and the front office should be shown the door! Their arrogance and egotism is detrimental to the team. Arrogance and egotism pervade their selection of draft picks and coaches, their personnel decisions and their interaction with the fans via the media. The latter has been hated but tolerated because the team performed. It is hated and intolerable now that the team is not performing.

The Eagles can save a ton of consultant money simply by reading the comments posted by Eagles fans. By now the Eagles know: 1) Castillo as D-coordinator is a mistake; 2) nobody behind the line can tackle; 3) the offense is in total chaos; and 4) "we are NOT fine there"!!

I wish Reid and the Eagles would save face and tell the truth(sometimes). Its embarrassingly obvious the defense is horrible and they need help.

The coach that needs a consultant is Andy Reid.

Reid would never bring in a guy like Jeff Fisher, because people would be calling for Fish to be head coach.

@ SkipinWV If they did that Jeff Fischer would be the new headcoach. As I stated before Jeff Fischer was in Philly during the off season, and I'm sure he talked with Jeffrey Lorie. Then came all of the new players, so I take it as giving Andy Reid everything he wanted. Time's up for Andy to make room for Jeff Fischer.

after the forthcoming shallacking by the Redskins this week (52-3?), wouldn't be surprised if Reid doesn't survive the bye week..one can always hope -- Eagles best chance is to win the Andy Luck sweepstakes and have a new coaching philosophy (Vick can then be the second-worst contract in sports --after Howard of course)

@ dasher, Al Davis's corpse could do a better job running this defense. Why would the Eagles bring in a consultant, that would be admitting Reid was wrong, and I can't remember a time when that happened

I keep coming back to this website several times a day hoping a new headline will read "REID FIRED". A good ending for eagle fans, just like a good ending to a good movie. FAT ANDY has always been arrogant and a control freak. He is the most over-rated HC in the NFL. Enough said. Times yours.
