Eagles-Cowboys II: Predictions, matchups

POSTED: Sunday, January 3, 2010, 8:12 AM

Week 17 has arrived and the Eagles know what stands in front of them: Beat Dallas and they win the division title and get a first-round bye; lose and they are a wild-card team and will play a road game next weekend.

Les Bowen will blog before, during and after the game from the new Cowboys Stadium, but we start your final regular-season Sunday with the staff predictions and key matchups.

DAILY NEWS STAFF PREDICTIONS

Les Bowen: Cowboys, 26-24

Ed Barkowitz: Eagles, 24-20

Bill Conlin: Eagles, 27-24

Paul Domowitch: Cowboys, 21-20

Marcus Hayes: Cowboys, 24-20

Mike Kern: Cowboys, 31-27

Vegas Vic: Eagles, 27-25

DALLAS MORNING NEWS PREDICTIONS

Todd Archer: Cowboys, 30-20

Tim Cowlishaw: Eagles, 27-20

Gerry Fraley: Cowboys, 19-17

Rick Gossellin: Cowboys, 38-35

David Moore: Eagles, 24-23

Bill Nichols: Cowboys, 28-24

Kevin Sherrington: Eagles, 21-17

Jean-Jacques Taylor: Cowboys, 20-17

DOMO'S KEY MATCHUPS

1.Eagles C Nick Cole and RG Max Jean-Gilles vs. Cowboys NT Jay Ratliff. Ratliff is an athletic NT with 6 sacks. Cole is making his first start at center and Jean-Gilles doesn't really have the feet to deal with a nose man with Ratliff's agility. Advantage: Cowboys

2. Eagles RDE Trent Cole vs. Cowboys LT Flozell Adams. Cole has 12 1/2 sacks, including 3 in the last 2 games. The 6-7 Adams has had a lot of problems with the high-motor Cole, who plays low and can't get under the bigger man's pads. Advantage: Eagles

3. Eagles WRs DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin vs. Cowboys CBs Terence Newman and Mike Jenkins. Newman and Jenkins held them to a combined 5 catches for 73 yards in first meeting. Since then, they've combined for nearly 1,000 yards and averaged a collective 15.9 yards per catch. Advantage: Eagles

today we will see what the eagles are made of. I believe the eagles will win on the backs of mcnaab and jackson as well as the rest of the offense. I hope the defense shows up, rattles romo early and hard, blitz anyone? and we will pull out a win.

Dallas will pop their pants when thay see Jackson,Maclin,Avant,Westbrook and McCoy lineup at the same time. Now who do you cover? I get this feeling Westbrook is going to have a BIG game.

Don't forget Brent Celek, our hottest and McNabbs favorite receiver! Gotta pound it with Weaver to setup the deep strikes. Eagles 31 Cowboys 17.

Sorry, but we just don't match-up all that well with the cowboys. If McNabb plays like he did in Phillie, it's going to be a really long day and we'll be 2/3rds of the way there toward every Eagles' fans' ultimate nightmare - losing 3 times to the cowboys in the same season. Best thing that can happen is that somebody else plays the cowboys in the first round of the play-offs. Hope I am wrong and I'll be there wearing old number 60's jersey . . .

DallasEagle shut the hell up...they barely won last game and were handed the game on a silver platter with the refs.

DallasEagle...You should listen to the Blueprint, twice. The Eagles will win for the simple fact that if Jackson gets double covered there is a whole lot of options like Maclin, Celek and McCoy out of the backfield. BUT McNabb has to play with heart and precision

Bednarick. if you are going to use the name of an Eagle legend as your name, at least spell it right. Last time I checked, cowgirls lead the series by about 14 wins in the overall tally. Don't get me wrong - I hope you and The Blueprint are right - although obviously The Blueprint did not see the game at The Linc earlier this year. Nothing would make me happier than to tell you and The Blueprint that you were right.

Depends on which McNabb we see. The mind numb dirt ball thrower or the alert on target professional. Let's hope we see the latter.

I don't see the Cowboys stopping this offense. Witten and Desean Jackson are going to have big games. Eagles 27-24.

DallasEagle is an idiot. His ramblings depict a person who has little grasp of the game. It seems he discounts the right side slant trap which Westbrook runs to perfection.

if the Vikings win at 1:00, What do the Cowboys have to play for except the East Championship? Shouldn't they rest their players??

The Eagles are a better team at this point than they were then, and the cowpokes are the same, maybe a little worse. Romo is the only cowgirl playing well, and we got the answer to that with the blitzing....if Patterson can cover Whitten when Romo starts scrambling, Birds defense puts up another performance like they did last year to close out the regular season. See, that's the difference, the Eagles know they can stop the cowpokes when it counts because they've already done it...the cowgirls go into this game wondering if they got it. They don't. Go Birds!

Remember the recipe Andy cooked up with Garcia back in '06 on Christmas? Ended up being a 23-7 physical beat down. I want to see that today, of course, the D has got to show up big to do that.

Romo is as always the key. If he makes mistakes, Dallas loses, if he manages not to make many mistakes, Dallas wins. Unless Andy gets very vreative in playcalling with the offensive weapons he has with Westie and Vick back, and theyscore about 50 points, I don't have enough confidence in the eagles secondary to prevent lots of Dallas get behind the defender scores

This game and however many playoffs games they get to play in, may determine which of the 3 QBs are back next year and which goes (Eagles can't afford to pay for 3 starting QB salaries and Vick won't play cheap very long with the NFL desperate for starting QBs. At least one goes, maybe 2)

Hey - The Blueprint. Be glad you weren't in Dallas for the game. Yep, McNabb rose to the occasion alright. Season is over. Wish my prediction about losing to the Cowboys 3 times in one season (4 out of last 5) weren't true. But it will be. Just be glad you are in Phillie and have other Eagles' fans to commiserate with since it is going to be a long off season for Eagle fans like me down here.
