Eagles Aren't Looking to Trade Foles
Les Bowen, Daily News Staff Writer
News of Thursday's Eagles signing of former Oregon quarterback Dennis Dixon arrived right around the same time that USA Today reported former Eagles coach Andy Reid would like to see the Chiefs trade for Nick Foles.
As is often the case when apparent serendipity strikes, some folks put these two events together and concluded Foles was on his way out of here, sooner rather than later.
Eagles sources moved quickly Thursday to knock down some of the more outlandish Dixon theories, letting it be known quickly that the 2008 Steelers fifth-rounder and recent Baltimore Ravens practice squad QB is coming here because he was available for nothing and he has history with Chip Kelly's offense. Dixon is hardly in some sort of anything-goes competition to be the Eagles' starter, regardless of what you might have read or heard elsewhere.
Friday, a source close to the situation said the Eagles "haven't even discussed moving Nick," and "want to keep Nick."
Of course, any player is available for the right price. The Associated Press reported the Eagles wouldn't consider moving Foles, a third-round rookie last year, for anything less than a first- or second-rounder. He is unlikely to command that price off his six-start rookie season, which showed promise but resulted in a 1-5 record. The Eagles' surprise one-year reworking of Michael Vick's contract seemed to give Vick the inside track on starting for the Birds this season.
ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay held a conference call Friday in which McShay said nobody in the NFL he has talked to has a first-round grade on any quarterback in the 2013 draft. If that's true, Foles' trade value might go up. But the Eagles would have to be willing to trade him.
***
The Eagles announced the signing of OT Ed Wang, 6-5, 315, a 2010 Buffalo draftee who played last season for the Raiders. Wang's parents were 1984 Chinese Olympians. Though Wang was born in Virginia, he is considered the first full-blooded Chinese-American drafted into the NFL.
Les, the team sources could be using you to put out the word that they want to keep Foles to keep the asking price high. As soon as a team lets it be known that they want to trade a player the price goes down. soulman386- Hold up, hold up . . . I've got a better one.
"Since The Season Ended, Foles' Improvement Makes Brady Look Like a Rookie."
Anyone think we could fool AZ twice? I'm a believer!
Soulman? What world do you live in? The agents make all of the deals. If Foles is on the block the agent will know about it and he will contact teams to try to place Foles in the best possible situation. Believe it or not, there is little impact that Les Bowen has on the trading process. guyguy4- What world do you live in???? Clearly not one that has any idea how football trades work. The agents have absolutely no control whatsoever in where a organization decides to trade a player, and are never informed of the availability of their client in terms of a trade, unless the organization grants the permission for said player to "seek" a trade (which is extremely rare). The agents don't make any of the "deals" when it comes to a trade, all they do is negotiate compensation either for a players rookie contract (which has basically been eliminated due to the rookie pay scale that was agreed upon in the last CBA), their free agent contract, or a renegotiation.
Foles' deal is set in stone in terms of money and years because a player that is in his rookie contract is not allowed (by language in the new CBA) to renegotiate that deal (even if traded) until the completion of the third year of the deal.
So basically everything you said above is 100% incorrect, and if the Eagles end up trading him, Foles' agent will find out right around the same time I do. GreenScabs - Guyguy, what world do you live in where a third rd draft pick w one year (and only 7 starts at that) of experience has the power to dictate where he will be traded. If trade ever comes to be, the Eagles will send Foles to the team that offers the most. Not the team that is best for Nick.
Can Les move the market? No. Do the Eagles ever reveal their true intentions. Only when forced. badstats
can we now say that USA today article was La Canfora'd peteike
Vick is an old washed-up $100 million contract failure who has LOST SEVEN GAMES IN A ROW...yet dumb Lurie loves him and "rewards" Vick with another new $10 million contract....Lurie is the problem with his decisions. jim35- Only $3.5 mill is guaranteed and that's if he make the squad. If traded, the other teams eats it. Lurie doesn;t make the decisions. That's Howie's job.
mike l - uhh, actually jlm35 is more correct then you. You are right about his contract but not in thinking that Howie makes all the decisions. Lurie owns the freaking team and signs off on EVERY important decision. Vick wouldnt even BE HERE if it were not for Jeffrey signing off on it in the first place. If he didnt want Vick here he would NEVER HAVE BEEN HERE. And Jeff plays an even bigger role in selecting the coach and the ENTIRE ORGANIZATION because Howie did NOT have final say on that JEFF LURIE ALONE has final say on who the coach is and can hire and fire that person anytime he wants...he runs the entire team and Howie is his butler/mailboy/"GM"...Howie controls nothing and just does what he is told. Jeff Lurie runs this team closely with whatever gimmick coach he happens to have at the time, and then will pay them rediculous sums of money to not win a superbowl and retain years after they should have been fired. This organization is literally one of the WORST RUN IN THE ENTIRE LEAGUE right now. P A T H E T I C.
- I started out very interested in your reply CG but, as I got further in, I started giggling at your caps. Does this mean you are super serious? By the end of your rant, I was laughing out loud. You've moved on from AR, which is good to see, but replaced him with Lurie? Is that so you never lose you're whipping boy again? vafan
jim35, the eagles didn't sign vick for $10M. they restructured to a new deal with a $3.5M signing bonus. he only gets another $3.5M if he's on the team to start the season. then the remaining $3M come from being on the field for 50% and 90% of the offensive snaps and the eagles winning the super bowl. the same reason Foles has value (lack of quality QB FAs and draft picks) is also why the eagles brought Vick back at a reduced price for this season. and they still may just trade him for a low pick. relax, it's only february. tripleplay83
foles is trash trade him while him and his innaccurate baby arm are worth anything at all AlexSp
I guess the old "we'll never will anything with Reid" will now be updated to "we'll never win anything with Lurie." Unfortunately, he's the owner and doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I'm so envious of the Patriots; would love to have an owner(s) such as the Kraft family. dundermifflin
the only future nick foles has in the NFL is holding a clipboard AlexSp
Trade Foles for a draft pick. Trade down from #4. Keep trading down and focus on high-ceiling project guys. Cut older veterans to clear up salary space. And here is the key: Tank 2013 and then draft Johnny Football. The PERFECT fit for Kelly's offense.
Super Bowl in three years. RandlBackScrambln- Or.......Mariota.
Super Bowl in three years. hoboduck
Trade him for a 7th rd pick who's injured but has a high motor. Geno D
Foles is a great QB and i wish him the best but if he can get us a 2nd RD pick i say why not. That usually means we would get a player with more value. We have other needs and can always get another QB next year. Right now we need players with MORE VALUE and this will take 2-3years to clean up Andy's MESS. We finally have a staff that some may question their coaching abilities but i dont think anyone can question that these guys will help us really draft quality players over the next few years. WE NEED ALL THE 2ND ROUND PICKS WE CAN GET. Go EAGLES!!!!!! Yes_General
fight racism with reverse racism. lets do it!!!!!! you guys over there always hate vick no matter what. and you there, you guys hate foles no matter what. read set!!!!!!!!!!!! defroe- If Lurie treated black QBs like he treats white QBs there would be an investigation. Lurie needs to be run out of town along with this racism.
4in5out7gone - i wish all th racism and lurie were gone too but it never will be not for a very long time...
defroe
reid loves foles but that doesnt mean he needs to go with foles. what are they doing with alex smith? i think any way things break down we will continue with the bad luck that we have had for over a half a century and reid and his team will be successful just because that's just how things go... lol i hope not, but damn it man can we catch a break!!!!!!!!! defroe
Mcshay and his sources, yeah, yeah, yeah. I would bet him that Geno Smith is a first round lock. I can't see him not being picked in the top 4 considering all 4 teams need a QB. If I hear one more person repeat Lurie's assertion that you can get QB's easy now a days, I am going to puke. it is still an impossible position to fill. Name another postion that has only 8-10 players playing the position for a team capable of winning the Super Bowl. UncleStosh
This comment has been deleted. The.Pirate- They pick up a QB on the cheap and that's what you determine? I respect Vick for turning his life around but I would rather see another QB..What happens if Dixon works out? Many good QB's were mired in backup land until their shot, and it rarely happens overnight..AkA. Aaron Rodgers

I am always amazed when people comment here or any major website and say this guy is "trash" etc. I would love to see anyone go up to Vick or Foles Or any sports player in this town and make the comments to their face. If that was rule here we would have a lot less nonsense from people hiding behind their computer. If you make a statement ask yourself if you would say it to that person's face? Doubt it! Alpha58
Maybe if Donovan McNabb lost about 30 pounds (and 7 or 8 years) he'd be a good fit for Kelly's offense. SteveS11
Maybe if the Chiefs give the Eagles the same thing that the Redskins gave to the Rams. ;-) DKNJ
This is hilarious, before the story broke about Reid potentially wanting to acquire Foles, Les wrote a story about how the Eagles shouldn't trade Foles when NOBODY in the Eagles organization or fans for that matter said anything about trading Foles, basically manufacturing news. Now Les posts a story with a quote saying a source close to the situation said the Eagles "haven't even discussed moving Nick," and "want to keep Nick". He's basically confirming that his first story was a result of a journalist with nothing to write trying to stir the pot when no story existed. I'm a Les Bowen fan, but come on. JayOfDaJungle
maybe les can predict the future. defroe
ibg, allworld2, lpboys still have hope that all the qb's on the eagles roster will be black and the whiteboy will be traded! defroe- I dont think Foles is any kind of amazing Quarterback but he is probably the best QB on the roster. Which isnt saying much because he wont even command much more then a 4th round pick from most teams in he league. Vick and Dixon combined could probably only get a 6th rounder though so its not all bad. In fact Vick could go for a 7th and they could throw in Dixon for free.
Alpha 58, that was an awesome post! So true.

Keep Foles Del/inFla
Keep Foles Del/inFla
Geno D
Unfortunately you are so right. I'm trying to keep a positive attitude about all this, but come week nine, when we're 1-8 with frickin Dennis Dixon starting because Vick's been out for weeks, the 4th round pick we got for Foles won't mean s___. rdglbav
There are things about Foles that I like to see in a quarterback,he seems to have good pocket awareness, and mobility, reacts well to pressure, keeps his head, keeps his eyes down field and throws a nice short pass.I don't know what his deep pass ability is but I assume someone drafted as high as he was can pass the ball.
I've seen enough of him to believe he deserves a chance. He looks a little bit like Eli did in his first year. Mike nomad
Please who saw Dixon ply for the Steelers when Ben was out knows this guy is a prctice squad player at best. Even in Kelly's offense the QB has to be a thrower with accuracy. Case closed on Dixon. Big Ben
soulman,,,,Exactly... What else could we expect them to say.
Throw out the " unless we are blown away" line and hope that someone does. Even money he is gone by training camp. For a #3. phillyroni
Man! Does anyone remember when genious college offensive master mind Steve Spurrier came into the NFL and brought Danny Wuerfel to the Redskins! Wuerfel was on his way out of the league, but under Spurrier's hard work and tutelage, that combo went to win Super Bowls, have a few perfect seasons, and save babies from dingos. This is starting to look a lot like that, and, I'll tell you but nobody else, it's EXCITING! Dixon - woohoo! NolaProf
In ny opinion, I really don't put too much stock in Philadelphia writers sources. Really. Anything that is a major development seems to be broken by national media. Philly media is suppose to be close to the situation but always seem to come up small. Examples------hiring of Chip Kelly, Vick signing, Butch Davis signing, the so call Rosenan deterent on finding a head coach and it seems the list goes on and on for days. Seems like bs to me. Corey301
This whole conversation is comical. I wrote right here on this site 2 weeks ago Foles was toast and Dixon would be Vick's backup. No new coach is building a team around a under-talented player like Foles. He is slow and his arm is weak sbdons1982
Charlie Garner exposing himself again and again dwilly
Lurie is calling the shots more than ever since Reid is gone. There is no way that Lurie would have Foles as the face of his franchise. Lurie is the next Jerry Jones in disguise. Carlos2
I agree Jeffery Lurie is making these awful decisions, NOT Banner or Reid are gone. Lurie is sneaky, he pretends Howie the ballboy and his flunkies are making the decisions, but Lurie is lying and hiding behind the scenes making all the big decisions. Lurie makes the decisions, just like Jerry Jones does for the Cowboys and Daniel Snyder does for the Redskins...only Lurie don't have the guts to admit it and take the blame, like these other owners do. jim35
Teddy Bridgewater over Johnny Football! Thirtyone
Vick won't make to game 3. Dixon shouldn't be on an NFL roster but may be ala Coach Kelly. Getting rid of Foles is a fool's play. Which playoff team had a speedy, running QB and which had the big throwers?? Good luck in 2013. It already looks like the Eagles are listing badly. billtfla
Mores the pity for Foles. His best chance at developing into a starting QB is to get away from the Eagles and that's not saying he will or can become a starting QB, but staying with the Eagles makes him part of the joke that is coming up.
obergruber
Out with the old, oops, Vick is still here. In with the new, Foles is gone, Dixon is in. krautmef1
To me, Dixons signing is similar to the Patroits signing Kafka. Kafka is a drop back, pocket passer which the Patroits employ, Dixon is familiar with Kellys system. Neither is an NFL starter or projected to be one. Foles however has enough talent to be a starter in the NFL, whether it be here in Philly or another city. watsonmr
When was the last time a GM said a player was on the trading block? Does Les think he is gettng the scoop of the day? If given the right offer, Foles is gone especially since next year is going to be awful anyway and I don't think he fits what Kelly wants to do. rwolffd12
Lurie does not want to keep Foles when he can have Mike Vick as the face of his franchise. Just like someone said, Lurie has been and is engaging in reverse racism. Lurie always finds a reason to NOT have a white QB. If Tom Brady was a 6th round rookie with a Lurie team, Lurie would have some intellectual reason to get rid of him before he even had an opportunity. Lets Eat
Foles is better off going to a team who will give him a fair chance to start.I like the kid and he deserves a chance to start.Lurie and the Eagles seems to have an agreement with Tony Dungy and some kind of thing with NFL human relations. bill the pill
The NFL is built for this gossiping. Maybe 20 games a year, each about 3 hours long, leaving 345 days of around-the-clock gossip. As if anyone knows why the Eagles redid Vick's contract, or whether 'they want to keep Foles' is a planted story or not. There will be 30 talking heads analyzing Chip Kelly's possible strategies as if they know until something actually happens, which the talking heads will breathlessly report then analyze until the next decision is announced. Cazptain Philadelphia
hey people!. I can't understand why y'all are down on foles. what did brady, eli, payton, and numerous other qb,s do in their 1st year. not much!. those of you who are football longtimers know that without an offensive line no qb is going to excel.i saw my 1st game in 1939. I was born in 1933 ,the same year the eagles were formed. I,ve seen a lot of bad teams . this is NOT a bad team when healthy. vick did nothing this year either. let,s wait until next year when the injured linemen are back and hopefully healthy. then make your decisions. personally foles looks like a "comer" to me. jm machuzick
@LetsEat; You are right, Lurie has some type of agreement with the NFL human resource bosses to keep Vick in the NFL. Jeffery Lurie has PhD degree in Social Policy and loves this Vick social experiment...that's why Lurie gave Vick a $100 million contract directly out of prison....and is now bringing back Vick again as Eagles QB, who has already failed miserably the past three years. jim35
Les Bowen shows himself as a dope and hack.....when he stated that Eagles sources cleared up rumors and that Dennis Dixon signed for nothing, etc etc.
Oh, I am so reassured, Les, that you have such faith in the front offce personnel who have been lying to fans for years. Who was your source, Howie Rosemann??? More than likely, the rumors are true. Lurie's mantra will always be "go cheap" That is why you have the two Brown's losers like Pat Shurmur and Mike Davis on the Eagles coaching staff; they're desperate and therefore cheap.
Foles?? Get rid of him now while he is worth a couple of late round draft picks, move up, and draft the best QB on the board. Stop thinking Foles is the new Tom Brady. krellmachine
Lurie has something fishy going on with black QBs. Not another team in the league has had so many for so long, can't be coincidental. Reverse racism is alive and well down at Nova Care. 4in5out7gone
Nick Foles appears to be better than any QB in the draft. Therefore, if Geno Smith is picked #10, Nick Foles is worth a #9 pick or better. You trade him only if you know you can get someone next year you like better, like the guy from Louisville. But that's a big gamble, and requires putting up a lot of losses this year. armchairGM
lone wolf you are a jerk your comments are always ridiculous come up with something interesting harveytrabbit- This site is loaded with garbage from tpizza, defroe and TNeaglefan and your criticizing lone wolf. You are just not paying attention bunny boy. tpizza, defroe and TNeaglefan are hare brains and you think lone wolf is ridiculous. Come on bunny boy start paying attention.

What's Foles shown anyone in a body of work over those 7 games he's started that makes him worth a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick? How did that get taken seriously? The kid has a future, he's not ready, nor do the Eagles have the receivers to take advantage of what may mature to deliver. But under no circumstance is he now ready to lead an NFL Team. He compared in no way to the other rookies at Quarterback last year. If Kelly really wants to run an option defense, there's no way Foles is the Quarterback you want to see coming around end as the ball carrier. Still I'd hand on to the kid and bring him along in another year or two. Dexter
Makes sense. Just in case his zone read option gimmick doesn't work, he wants to keep a normal QB on the roster. EmanuelP
If AR offers a fourth rounder, take it...we need too mcuh to hold on to guy who is a maybe in this system.....Vick is the starter cause he is mobile, Dixon is the player coach (see Doug Pederson) and EJ or someone will be drafted////// nuggett
