The Eagles have begun the process of bulking up their roster for minicamps and training camp by signing two defensive stalwarts from the Canandian Football League to 3-year contracts.

Toronto Argonauts cornerback Byron Parker and Calgary Stampeders defenisve end Charleston Hughes are both expected to join the Eagles when the offseason workouts begin in March, according to reports in Canada. Hughes, at 6-1, 245, is expected to work at linebacker, given his size.

Of course, neither player has any guarantee, but both jumped at the opportunity to try the NFL and selected the Eagles after interest or workouts from other NFL teams.

Parker, 27, has previously been cut by Dallas and Jacksonville and the Argos would retain his rights if he is cut by the Eagles in training camp. "He and I talked about it. and, as tough as it was emotionally for him to leave, the CFL can't compete financially with the NFL," Parker's agent, Lance Riddle, told the National Post.

Parker was All-CFL in 2006 and 2007, and holds the league record for interception return yardage in a game and for a season.

Among the more interesting factoids about Parker is that he went to Tulane initially on a basketball scholarship and won the NCAA slam dunk contest -- held at the Final Four each year -- in 2003.

Hughes, 25, signed after a workout with the Birds on Monday. He led the Canadian Football League in tackles for loss with 12, tied for the team lead in sacks (five) and fumble recoveries (two) while finishing second in tackles with 66 for the Grey Cup champions.

"Oh, man, I don't even know what to do with myself right now," Hughes told the Calgary Herald. " I don't know whether to jump around and start running or just sit down and say, 'Thank you,' and accept it."

We don't know what to expect from this guys, if anything, but I always love to find out about players picked up at this time of the year. There's no guarantee that they'll be here come July, but you never know and that's what's exciting about football. There's plenty to be negative about in general, but not this stuff.

when are the open tryouts? anybody else ready to suit up? i'm pretty good at football- i led my fantasy league in points- a move that smacks of desperation- next we'll be signing australian football "defensive stalwarts" just for the purpose of "bulking up their roster for minicamps and training camp"

Geez, do some of you ever just chill out and relax? This is what all NFL teams have done for the last 20 years. After their season ends, they start signing bodies for training camp. It's not like anyone said these were major acquisitions for the team. I guess some of you think they shouldn't sign anybody unless they are All-Pro.

Big Game
Jeff Garcia: CFL then the NFL. Doug Flutie: USFL, CFL, then the NFL. Kurt Warner: undrafted, Arena Football, NFL Europe, then the NFL. Talent can be found in odd places. If they stink, you cut them. Their contracts aren't guaranteed anyway. It can't hurt.

More warm bodies for training camp and it cost us nothing to look....but it is hardly a move to tip the scales....

i'd much rather have 2 guys who've been playing in the CFL taking up roster spots than a reality show winner!

Hey, maybe we can unload Sheppard for a quality pick. Maybe Joselio has more value on the market now? The two best from a smaller, faster league that makes it easier for their WR to get open (running starts allowed)--I really like the inexpensive quality moves. Does this threaten Gocong, Joselio, and Sheppard? You bet. That's all you need to know.

Easy guys, remember where Warner came from. Give the Eagles credit for leaving no stone unturned. Bring them in and let them compete for a job.

Wow! Did Jeff Lurie morph into Jerry Jones all of sudden? First, we outbid the Calvary Christian Academy for the modern day Bill Walsh (aka Doug Pederson). Now we sign two stalwarts from the CFL!! Jeff you might want to call Jon Bon Jersey and see if you can broker a deal for some of that idle Soul talent…..I can’t wait for that Donovan McNabb-Kevin Kolb-Matt D’Orazio QB controversy at Lehigh this summer!!

Les BowenLes Bowen has covered the Eagles for the Daily News since 2002. Before that, he spent nearly 13 years covering the Flyers. It took Les only a few seasons after the switch to figure out that there was no penalty box at the Linc, and that the time really wasn't his, despite what Andy Reid kept saying. Les came to Philadelphia and the Daily News from Charlotte in 1983. In the intervening years, he has pretty much lost track of NASCAR, and his accent. He, his wife Barbara, and their two sons live in Haddon Township, New Jersey.

Paul DomowitchPaul Domowitch has been with the Daily News since 1982. He has spent most of his 27 years at the paper covering the Eagles and pro football. For the last 10 years, he’s been a selector for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A native of Wilkes-Barre and a graduate of Wilkes University, Domo came to the Daily News from the Fort Worth (Tx.) His first beat at the Daily News actually wa s boxing, which he covered just long enough to lose two sports coats to blood spatter before moving on to football.
