Some notes and thoughts from the Scouting Combine and beyond ...

*  As Les wrote on Twitter, leaving the combine, it's hard not to feel even more strongly that this draft sets up well for much of what the Eagles need -- defensive backs and defensive linemen, especially. The depth in this draft on defense is as good as it's been in a long time. Where it does not set up well for the Eagles is in guards or centers.

* Agent J.R. Rickert said injured center Jamaal Jackson is progressing well, but he is not expected on the field until mid-August at the earliest, following knee surgery.

* Yesterday ended the media access for the players and team personnel, but the combine continues through Tuesday. Defensive linemen and linebackers are on the field today and defensive backs go tomorrow. NFL Network has live coverage each day beginning at 11 a.m.

* Terrell Owens, who is again looking for a team, promised big things for whomever decides to sign him, via his Twitter feed. "Cn't wait 2 start working out! Whoever i play 4 this yr, we're gonna b legitimate contenders!! I'm excited about the opportunity!"

Ravens coach John Harbaugh said that Baltimore is interested in Owens. That would be a strange landing spot since you might recall Owens could have been a Raven before he became an Eagle, but ended up with the Eagles after negotiations between the 49ers, Ravens and Eagles. The case went to arbitration, but the teams agreed to a deal before a decision was reached, with the Eagles sending Brandon Whiting to San Francisco and a fifth-round pick to Baltimore.

Ray Lewis was among the Ravens who were not very happy with TO at the time. "Sooner or later he's gonna have to run into me one way or the other. It's hard to respect guys that pose and do things like that," Lewis said on Sporting News Radio.

Of course, that is all a long time ago and plenty has happened since, but it would be interesting to see how TO would be received in Baltimore.

* With 14 teams expected to employ 3-4 defensive schemes this season, nose tackles have become a valuable commodity, both in the draft and free agency. Three of the six teams that used the franchise tag on players this year put it on nose tackles. A fourth, the Steelers, also had put the franchise tag on their nose tackle, Casey Hampton, before signing him to a 3-year deal.

"It's just a tough position to find a player," Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli said. "Not everyone wants to play that position and it's a very, very difficult position. It takes a very different kind of person and I mean that in a good way. The one difference is that there are different types of 3-4s. Everyone just talks about the 3-4 and the use of a nose. It depends on how you play your 3-4. That has an impact on the type of nose you're looking for, so it's an incredibly valuable position."

* And for those of you who follow local players in the NFL, Tampa Bay has given a third-round tender to wide receiver Maurice Stovall, a product of Archbishop Carroll, according to the Tampa Tribune. Stovall was originally a third-round pick and this would give him a salary of $1.176 million in 2010, more than double his salary if he accepts the one-year offer. If he leaves for another team, the Bucs will get a third-round pick.

Defensive end and linebacker. The birds need someone on the other side of Cole. It is amazing how good your secondary looks with a legitimate pass rush. They need a linebacker that can cover a tight end. When is the last time the Eagles have had a playmaking LB. The answer is Seth Joyner and that was a while ago.

People, Reid cannot draft linebackers. Only 1 quality (Bradley) in 11 years;terrible track record. If you know another, name him (please, not Gocong). Also, better pay up for a starting center. Cannot go into season with injured lineman, no matter how well his agent says he's progressing. That's his job. I don't know where Reid got his medical degree from. He keeps trying to play injured players, and I faulted him when he sent BWEST back after the 1st concussion, when there were several articles written by medical personal he should sit for a longer period.

goingpostal..it could be Sean Weatherspoon, but i don't think Reid will draft a LB in the 1st. But he is a gifted young man who has the talent to back his talking up. Would LOVE to see him on the team. One of the biggest weaknesses we had was allowing TE's to walk all over up because of the lack of coverage on them, which he would shore up

Hey GP10, Seth Joyner just might be my all time favorite Iggle, but the last playmaking linebacker we had was William Thomas, and that was still way too long ago

defensive end - first priority....offensive tackle - second priority...saftey - third priotiy, linebacker fourth priortiy.....but don't worry Andy will trade down to save money and he is so brilliant he can "coach them up"...you remember our last two games....our weak cheap back-ups were "coached up" and we got killed by the cowgirls....so much for the brilliant coaching by Andy and the cost savings by Joe.....Jeffery...Have you no pride....

loser mentality? Are you serious? Just because the birds haven't won the SB yet doesn't mean they have a loser mentality. Get real. 3/4 of the teams in the NFL would love to contend every year. Sometimes luck plays a part in the outcome. There haven't been blow outs lately in the SB.

half the league is in a 3-4 now and we're still trying to make lemons out of lemonade with guys like Gocong and Gaither and Abiamiri. Feels like we missed the boat on that one

Les BowenLes Bowen has covered the Eagles for the Daily News since 2002. Before that, he spent nearly 13 years covering the Flyers. It took Les only a few seasons after the switch to figure out that there was no penalty box at the Linc, and that the time really wasn't his, despite what Andy Reid kept saying. Les came to Philadelphia and the Daily News from Charlotte in 1983. In the intervening years, he has pretty much lost track of NASCAR, and his accent. He, his wife Barbara, and their two sons live in Haddon Township, New Jersey. E-mail Les at bowenl@phillynews.com and follow him on Twitter.

For the last 10 years, he’s been a selector for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A native of Wilkes-Barre and a graduate of Wilkes University, Domo started his career in Texas, working first for the Midland Reporter-Telegram (1976-78), and then for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, where he covered some god-awful Texas Ranger baseball teams. His first beat at the Daily News actually was boxing, which he covered just long enough to lose 2 sports coats to blood spatter before moving on to football. Domo and his wife Shelley, a University of Oklahoma grad who still hasn’t gotten over that Fiesta Bowl loss to Boise State 5 years ago, have 2 terrific daughters -- Allison, 28, who is an attorney in South Jersey, and Amy, 25, who works in administration for a professional baseball team.
