The doctors who examined Eagles running back Brian Westbrook today in Pittsburgh reported in a statement that his symptoms have improved significantly since Sunday's second concussion and they expect a full recovery. He will be re-tested in 2-3 weeks, they said.

Westbrook was examined at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center by sports concussion specialists Dr. Joseph Maroon and Dr. Michael Collins.

“We are very encouraged by Brian’s progress, we believe that he has an excellent prognosis and we expect a full recovery,” Maroon and Collins said in the joint statement. “We developed a comprehensive physical rehab plan for Brian, and we will repeat the detailed testing in the next two to three weeks.”

As part of his visit today, the doctors said Westbrook was "re-tested today with a battery of neuro-cognitive tests, including ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing), a computerized tool that is used by all NFL teams for evaluating injury recovery. He also underwent comprehensive physical and neurological exam, results of which were favorable."

The statement said Westbrook was cleared completely from his symptoms after the initial concussion against Washington before sustaining the second concussion Sunday against San Diego. The doctors described the second as a "much milder concussion which was not related to loss of consciousness but associated only with dizziness and headache." Westbrook was knocked unconscious from the initial blow against Washington.

“We commend the Eagles athletic training and medical staff for their diligent and conservative care in this particular case as well as their historical excellence in managing these types of injuries,” added Dr. Mark Lovell, director of the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program.

Maroon is a UPMC neurosurgeon and longtime team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dr. Collins is a UPMC neuropsychologist at the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program.

Its just football. As passionate as i am about it thats all it is. Football. I hope Brian takes care of himself and I hope the EAgles just leave him alone for the rest of the season. This isnt like Shawn Andrews where his heart and desire come into the question We know who Brian is. He plays hurt every week. But he plays. Let that man heal himself if he can heal. If not..we love you Brian and we are glad the EAgles rewarded you with a contract you deserve based on your efforts. Andy.. Its time to teach Lesean how to run inbetween the tackles.

The long term deleterious effects of concussions are never apparent at such early a stage. These doctors get their money by finding justification to get these players back on the field. I won't even make the obvious joke about the last name....

Yes, a full recovery from his 2nd concussion in 10 days. That does not mean that "all systems are go" in the near future. He will be more susceptible to concusions now like Eric Lindros and hould be placed on IR immediately for the rest of the season. He will never be the same. To risk getting hit again and bruising his skull and brain would be malfeasance on the Eagles part. Remember Andre Waters...his brain matter detiorated and he committed suicide.

Sounds like a report by Doctors who are in the same union as the Eagle Doctors and paid for by the EAGLES and they are covering their butts and protecting themsleves and the Eagles.....Brian.....don't risk it this year....UNfortunately the team is going no where this year and Your future would be better served if you took the whole year off.....

No -- he shouldn't play again this season. In fact he should take his money and retire so he doesn't suffer any more damage to his brain. He's a great player who has played hurt a lot but this isn't an ankle or a foot, it's his brain. Get out now.

Zeru, why bring Andrews into this? How much do you know about his back injury? Andrews has had serious injuries 3 times during his career. To question his heart from your position of ignorance is just appalling.

Wow, Westbrook is expected to make a full recovery? Based on the commentary by the local reporters the last few days, I thought Westbrook was on his death bed. This is why reporters should stay away from making medical evaluations.

Shut him down Eagles. For Brian and the team, shut him down for the rest of the year.

If asked directly, and not through some legally filtered mechanism of liability protection, I wager 400 quatloos that any real and competent neurologist worth his salary would tell anyone to NOT play football. Ever. For any reason. Think they would let their own kids play?

Are the Eagles going to win the Superbowl this year? No. Lost Bradley, Andrews, and the offensive line, linebackers, and defensive backs are all banged up. So why should Westbrooke come back? To quote Ricky Waters, "For who, for what?"

There is absolutely no reason for Westbrook to risk his mental health by playing again this year. And, before you all get breathless about this and start your raggedy posts, I'm a 22-year season ticket holder. I read an article by a brain expert at HUP that said about brain injuries from concussions that this is like a knee or hip, that you can limp around on, this is "about who you are". Why would any of you want Westbrook to risk "who he is" for a stinking football game? I'd rather see him walk away and then cheer for him when he comes back and gets inducted into the Eagles Honor Roll.

BWest talks as if he's had 200 concussions already. Take some time off. Enjoy life. You're getting paid millions to catch a ball and play a silly game...think about it. Take the checks and enjoy it! (And get some speech lessons too...so I can understand when you talk.)

It took Les only a few seasons after the switch to figure out that there was no penalty box at the Linc, and that the time really wasn't his, despite what Andy Reid kept saying.
