Defensive assistant leaves Eagles

POSTED: Monday, January 25, 2010, 6:13 PM

Brian Stewart is heading back to Texas.

Stewart, who joined the Eagles staff last offseason after being fired as the Dallas Cowboys' defensive coordinator, has been named defensive coordinator at the University of Houston.

“We thank Brian for the job he did this past year in Philadelphia," Eagles coach Andy Reid said in a statement. "He’s a good football coach and he’s well deserving of this new opportunity. He will bring a great deal of coaching experience to the already strong football staff at the University of Houston. We wish Brian and his family all the best.”

In a statement released by the University of Houston, Stewart said, “I think Coach [Kevin] Sumlin has done a great job at Houston, and I am glad to join his staff,” Stewart said. “Obviously, his offense is one of the best in the nation and scores a lot of points. What that does for the defense, is that it puts us in a position to attack and put a tremendous amount of pressure on the quarterback.

“Plus, I am excited about coming back to the city of Houston. This city is a hotbed for talent with an opportunity for UH to be a consistent winner. I would like to be a head coach some day, so being a successful coordinator in a successful program in a large city like Houston will put me in line to do so.”

Stewart has been in the NFL since 2001 after nine years as a college coach.

This is a sign that they have confidence in Sean McDermott. They could have offered the D coordinator position to Stewart.

Now, if we can just get rid of Marty, and get an OC that understands the importance of a running game, we might be getting somewhere!

Stewart missed the whole season. Gaither missed most of it. Hobbs got hurt. Hanson was suspended for 4 games. The offense was hit even harder by the injury bug. Nothing from either Andrews boy all year. Jamal Jackson was hurt at the end. Herremans missed a couple of games. Peters limped through most of the season. Westbrook contributed nothing, Celek hurt his thumb. Ingram missed all year. McNabb missed a couple of games, Vick got hurt late in the year. Bumps and bruises are a part of the NFL, but last season was crazy. A good draft, combined with a reasonably healthy season (The 'girls had nobody on IR when the playoffs started) will make a hugh difference. 11-5 was a miracle when you think about it.

Thanks for the injury update Paul. How about the fact that we dont have a 2nd pass rushing de to compliment cole. We dont have great cover corners and lacked at safety. After bradley went down we had no lb core.

You took the words right out of my mouth NickEeee. When is someone going to offer Mornhinweg a job? Apparently, he's not considered worthy material.

What good does it do to get rid of Marty if Reid and McNabb are staying?

Do you think Reid would let an OC have a running game?

PEFF; the coverage sucked but the pass rush was about the same. Samuel can cover but not tackle. Brown can tackle but not cover. Why not move Brown to safety and start Hobbs or Hanson at CB?

you guys are dopes! look at the colts and how much they passed. the ravens and jets ran the ball and look what happened to them! it is about execution not play selection

can't compare the Colts and Eagles passing stats. Manning puts the ball in places McNabb can only dream about

retzlaff - that what tremo means by execution - Manning can execute the play (put the pass where the receiver can catch it) - it's not as much about the percentage of pass vs. run...it's the execution of the play that determines success or failure.

Was he the reason D was so terrible??? Cowdumps quietly dumped him the year before, so why would Eagles sign him in the first place? Need a new Coordinator to switch to 3-4 scheme. Draft/sign tough Linebackers, get rid of Sean Jones and 'Not Mucho' Harris to upgrade entire secondary. Kolb is ready to start. Will outscore NFC East teams and win division, get #2 seed and host a Playoff game on way to the Bowl...
