Samuel, Vick, Cooper Out; McCoy Intends to Play

POSTED: Friday, October 8, 2010, 9:08 AM

UPDATE: Cornerback Asante Samuel and wide receiver Riley Cooper have been ruled out for Sunday's game with concussions. As expected, Michael Vick is out with a rib injury. The three will not travel with the team.

Joselio Hanson and Dimitri Patterson are expected to fill in for Samuel at corner.

“I usually study like I’m going to start anyway, so nothing’s really changed for me,” Hanson said. "I don’t feel any pressure. I’m just going out there and play a game that I’ve played all my life. I love playing on national TV too, so that should be real fun.”

The Eagles have only been dressing four wide receivers, since Hank Baskett was released Sept. 21. With Cooper's injury, the Eagles could sign Chad Hall off the practice squad and dress him for the game. Eagles coach Andy Reid said Hall will travel with the team. To use him, of course, the Eagles will have to trim someone from the 53-man roster. They might be hoping to avoid having that player picked up by someone else by waiting until the last minute; a team adding a guy from the Eagles would then have to cut someone right before a game.

“I know what I’m capable of, so I’m just preparing for everything," Hall said. "Everything I did in the preseason, any way they can use me, I’ll be ready.”

Running back LeSean McCoy is listed as questionable with a cracked rib, but Reid and McCoy said today that McCoy will play. He practiced Friday for the first time this week and was listed as a full participant.

"I feel ready to go," McCoy said. "Very excited to get out there and play some football. It’s another game for us. ...  I’ve played a whole half injured, so I feel confident. There’s a little pain, but it comes with the territory in this type of business. In this type of game, you’re bound to be banged up."

Max Jean-Gillies will again start at guard even though Nick Cole, who is listed as questionable with a knee injury, is expected to play. "Max is the starting right guard," going forward, Reid said. Jean-Gilles declined to speak with reporters about his promotion.

Reggie Wells did not practice today with an illness.

Reid couched it in terms of different packages for different situations, but the upshot seemed to be that Juqua Parker will start again at left defensive end, though he will still split time with first-round rookie Brandon Graham. Graham confirmed that Parker, who leads the team with four sacks, has regained the starting role. Graham is fighting through shoulder and ankle injuries and did not play  well against Washington.

Earlier, it seemed the Eagles thought Samuel and Cooper would play this week. Reid said Cooper, after passing concussion testing, suddenly developed symptoms. He said Samuel, who has not symptoms, can't pass the testing.

A promotional appearance that DeSean Jackson filmed this summer in Los Angeles will debut in advance of the Eagles game against San Francisco.

Jackson is featured in the NBC spot to promote Sunday's game.

Footage airs of some of Jackson's big plays with Al Michaels' calls. A voiceover then says: "The high-flying Eagles soar into San Francisco to take on the 49ers."

Jackson appears on screen in uniform and begins NBC's tagline, "Sunday night ..." Another highlight is shown, then back to Jackson "... Is football night."

The commercial is among a number of things Jackson filmed over the summer, including a spot for ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown and the ABC reality show Shaq Vs.

Ok Kolb, this is your chance against an extremely desperate team playing for their season, you better bring something or your career path will be altered yet again. niners have decent defense also, isnt Takeo Spikes on their team? no wonder theyre losing, way to go takeo, trying to miss the playoffs again eh

Michael Vick is out because they want their prize 100% healthy, and my sources are telling me the Eagles brass are negotiating with Vick's agent for a 3 year, $30 million dollar contract after they realized they can't win with Kolb. Although the cheapskate Eagles (WHO ARE IN THE BOTTOM THIRD OF NFL SALARY SPENDING, and according to my sources, are in the top 3 of MOST PROFITABLE NFL TEAMS), may be reluctant to spend anything if they don't have to (see: 2009 offseason, anyone making any kind of decent money was CUT, including McNabb who it looks like we could use right now). The Eagles need to lock up Desean Jackson, Shady McCoy (even though the cheapskate Eagles know he's only in second year) and most importantly MICHAEL VICK if they want to have any chance of winning.

I'll be honest I was pretty down on Hanson based on his performance at the end of last year, but he seems to be playing better this year so far. Hope he brings it Sunday night.

Asante Samuel: the only Philly guy with more no-hitters than Roy Halladay.
