What should the title of Sunday’s Eagles-Giants playoff game be?
Broad Street vs. Broadway
Big Apple vs. Big Pretzel
Melee at the Meadowlands
Turnpike Bowl
Amtrak Bowl

Geoffrey Chaucer never played quarterback for the Eagles, though he did fight in The Hundred Years War, whichGeoffrey Chaucer might be kind of the same thing. Chaucer is attributed with observing that "many a true word is said in jest."

So it seemed Wednesday, when Donovan McNabb endured a long sparring match with a super-sized, playoff media contingent in his weekly news conference, in which the quarterback declined to be baited into once again discussing his feelings about having been benched for that half in Baltimore, or into discussing his feelings about his contract. Then McNabb was asked a final question, about the struggles of the Giants' defense down the stretch.

"Sometimes during the course of the year, you don't play as well as you did early on," McNabb said. "None of them got benched."

He was smiling broadly as he said this, and then he left the stage, to startled laughter.

That quip was the highlight of the morning media session, which also inlcuded the news that Eagles defensive end Victor Abiamiri (foot) has been medically cleared and was scheduled to practice Wednesday, presumably making him likely to return to the rotation Sunday against the Giants. Right guard Shawn Andrews also got medical clearance and also was to practice, though Eagles coach Andy Reid said Andrews will not be active for this week's divisional round playoff game at the Meadowlands.

Fullback Dan Klecko, who suffered a shoulder injury against Minnesota, was not scheduled to practice. It seems likely that Kyle Eckel will start in Klecko's spot.

The Eagles also have signed a cornerback, Dimitri Patterson, formerly of the Chiefs and Redskins. He takes the roster spot of offensive lineman Mike McGlynn, who was placed on IR after tearing a hamstring against the Vikings. Since the Eagles have no real need for another corner right now, and it's unlikely Patterson is going to learn Jim Johnson's defense during the playoffs, it's likely they are looking to 2009, and wanted to get the guy on their roster before someone else signed him.

McNabb had another funny line, when someone asked him about the Birds making the cover of Sports Illustrated, which refers to them as "dangerous." McNabb noted that in the West, the Cardinals are on the cover.

"It's a regional copy. Everybody's dangerous," McNabb said.

Brian Westbrook said even though the Birds are facing the Giants for the third time this season, he expects new wrinkles, with New York coming off a bye.

"Anytime you have two weeks before you play somebody, you're going to bring something new," Westbrook said.

Real leaders don't have to constantly tell you that they are the leader and real men don't constantly snipe around a subject with little comments instead of meeting it head on. Just say how you feel about getting benched and move on, Don. I'm afraid a freakin' catfight's gonna start any moment at a press conference. Really, grow up - deal with it and move on.

you know what i am sick of hearing? how our star athletes are treated so badly by the fans. ahh,,,poo, poo, it must be tough to make gazillions of dollars as a paid pro athlete, it comes with the territory and if they can't take it then maybe they should be flippin burgers somewhere. donny is a whining, petulent child, who is more concerned about yukking it up and having a good time, then winning a super bowl, from the draft day booing which he still brings up, to the comments like i'm in the playoffs now he is constantly on the poor me circuit. no matter what the media was asking him did he need to say none of the giants got benched, excuse me donavan and all of you, but here is a newsflash, when the giants started to struggle they already had the playoffs and the division wrapped up, no need to bench anyone, the eagles were hanging on for there playoff lives when andy had to try something. and i don't care what the quarterback sais but it sure seems to have lit a fire under his butt.

Good post about McNabb making it hard for people to like him. I'm not sure why some people think that just looking at the numbers is reason enough to give the guy a free pass to say and act however he wants. If it was only about the numbers we wouldn't watch the games, just look at the stat sheet afterwards. However for those of us who like to watch the games and watch some of PCs and have witnessed for years the thin-skinned, goofy, insecure demeanor of the man who is supposed to be trying to lead our team to a superbowl championship, it becomes pretty easy to overlook his numbers. McNabb tries to be the nice guy and everything else while seeming to fail to realize that his only job, the reason he gets paid 10 million dollars a year is to do everything he can to win a superbowl. It's a no excuses put up or shutup business and he always has all the excuses. For the time being though, he's the man so we should all stand behind him on Sundays. GO EAGLES BEAT THE GIANTS!!

The last time I checked the NY Giants were 12-4 and have home field advantage through the playoffs and the Eagles were 9-6-1 and got into the playoff off shear luck. And McFumble wonders why no NY Giants were benched? Just like he did not know there was tie in NFL football, you moron!

I was in the Garden listening to Knicks fans boo Patrick Ewing. Maybe living out west has kept you out of touch with pro sports

Is Donovan McNabb just about Donovan McNabb? You betcha. No matter what happens at the end of this year the Eagles need to sit down with McMe and find out if he wants to be a part of a team or just be a team with himself as the star!!

ras, the fact that your old enough to have a child that is 10 years old, yet still lack the intelligence to realize why McNabb is still "whining" is really troubling. McNabb never brings it up, and he doesn't say anything until about the 15th time he's asked the question. On top of that, people like neon deion are treating like he is an idol and telling him he shouldnt even want to be here anymore. I'd like to see you, at your age, handle this all better. I seriously doubt you would even make it through your first press conference.

Mcnabb is clearly upset about the benching since it defines a QB's mortality in the NFL. Mcnabb wants the security of a new contract. He knows it took him 10 years to learn this offence and a job with a new team , exposing his passing problems outside of the west coast style, scares him, brings out his paranoia, persecution complex, and delusions of how he has been treated by fans media and teamates. He is on the brink of a nervous breakdown, taunting fans at every chance, etc. Eagles need to get him some help as he is getting worse every year. He better win the Super Bowl , he is not mentally tough enough for another failure right now.

The Birds luck into the playoffs and all of a sudden McNabb and Reid are geniuses. Gimme a break. McNabb made a funny, except he never really makes a funny about himself. He can't do that. Afraid it will show he's human. Pity. Never blame oneself when you can blame others. Just a coincidence how he sucked for three weeks, gets benched, then comes out and plays well. Of course benching had nothing to do with it. Maybe it was the Campbell's Soup.

wolf: the eagles defense is the reason they're in the playoffs. we all know this. they've bailed out mcnabb several times. i'm no mcnabb apologist, but its not his fault desean jackson dropped two easy catches, one in the end zone (against washington). against minnesota, mcnabb had two huge third-and-long plays backed up in their own 10 in the fourth quarter, both completions to avant for first downs. both completions sustained drives to flip field position and preserve the game. the man should get some credit. to say joe flacco is better than mcnabb is ridiculous. philip rivers had a great year, but until he takes san diego to the super bowl you can't say he's better than mcnabb.

I think his answer is sour grapes. Get over it. He deserved to get benched. Jimmy Rollins did not run out a ground ball or hustle this year and Manuel benched him. Did Rollins whine about it or point to the back of his jersey the next time he helped win a game? No. This is why McNabb may never win the big game. I hope I am wrong but he is a very self centered individual.

wolf, you are an idiot. joe flacco is not a better qb than mcnabb. he's thrown for less than 3,000, has a lower completion percentage, 14 td and 12 picks. all he has to do is attempt to manage their set plays, their d wins games for them. mcnabb is asked to do everything, and i never hear him "whine." every offseason (for almost 10 years now) he hints that he would like ONE big-name receiver, and never gets one. he doesn't cry about it. peyton manning, a couple of years ago after losing to new england in the playoffs, threw his entire offensive line under the bus. don doesn't make excuses like that.

How is asking a question about the Giants defense goading him into making a reference to getting benched? He got benched because he was absolutely awful for two games. They do that with goalies in hockey and yank a star pitcher in baseball when he doesn't have it. He was embarrassed and has miraculously played well since, yet claims it had no effect. Whatever, Phillymike is right - you want to like him but the martyr routine and goofy nerd antics on the sidelines make it hard. Win a close, big game in the 4th quarter, Don, without losing your breath or your lunch and all will be good. Of course, Andy will have to avoid clock and time-out mismanagement for that to happen. Andy, two words: more Buck!

Donna always loves to say things like "i'd talk about it, and then i move on"... But he never does move on. A lot of people, myself included, really really really try hard to like the guy, but he surely makes it very difficult for us to do so. It's not like the criticisms of him and his benching were unwarranted. As a starting QB of the team, would you rather do/say things to make people respect you, instead of feeling sorry for you? Just shut up already and don't be such a drama queen. Let people enjoy the playoff excitement instead of having to deal with your sappy stories.

Les BowenLes Bowen has covered the Eagles for the Daily News since 2002. Before that, he spent nearly 13 years covering the Flyers. It took Les only a few seasons after the switch to figure out that there was no penalty box at the Linc, and that the time really wasn't his, despite what Andy Reid kept saying. Les came to Philadelphia and the Daily News from Charlotte in 1983. In the intervening years, he has pretty much lost track of NASCAR, and his accent. He, his wife Barbara, and their two sons live in Haddon Township, New Jersey.

You can now follow Les Bowen on Twitter.

Paul DomowitchPaul Domowitch has been with the Daily News since 1982. He has spent most of his 27 years at the paper covering the Eagles and pro football. For the last 10 years, he’s been a selector for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A native of Wilkes-Barre and a graduate of Wilkes University, Domo came to the Daily News from the Fort Worth (Tx.) Star-Telegram, where he covered some god-awful Texas Ranger baseball teams. His first beat at the Daily News actually wa s boxing, which he covered just long enough to lose two sports coats to blood spatter before moving on to football. Domo and his wife Shelley, a University of Oklahoma grad and very dangerous to be around following a Sooner loss, have been married 29 years and have raised 2 terrific daughters – Allison, 26, a lawyer and graduate of Boston University School of Law; and Amy, 23, who graduated from Clemson and works in marketing and sales for a professional baseball team.
